State of the Hall: Coverage plans and your support

by Staff in Site News | October 26th, 2009

The latest “State of the Hall,” which we’d like you to read, is after the jump.

When we opened up the site for donations back in the spring, it was based on feedback we received on our reader survey that indicated that over 40% of you would be willing to contribute. We had few donations initially and since then, haven’t really mentioned it further on the site.

A couple of things to point out:

- The site is free for everyone to read. Some of the information we publish is considered to be “premium” elsewhere. We began with a goal of building a community that would be available to and resonate with all IU fans and we feel like it’s been mission accomplished so far. To date, we’ve had over 34,000 comments and we’re on target for our best traffic month ever this month. We’re thankful for the 23,000 of you who read us each month.

- Yes, we run ads on the site. And you’re probably asking, why ask for donations if you run ads? This is a three-part answer:

1) The ads help us maintain the site: server costs aren’t cheap and we might need to upgrade very soon due to growth.
2) The ads help put a little bit of change (ITH isn’t full-time for any of us, we do have jobs) in our pockets for the time we invest to author and maintain the site.
3) The feedback we received suggested that some of you would like to show your support by donating.

Plans for the season:

With the season about to tip-off, we wanted to pass along our plans for coverage this season. We will be covering select home games in-person for the first time. Since none of us live in Bloomington, there will be an expense associated with this. We also plan to bring back ‘Good, Bad and Ugly’ and ‘The Morning After.’ And ‘Film Session’ could also make its triumphant return from time-to-time as well when warranted.

Additionally, we would like to travel around the state to watch and bring you video content and interviews from some of Indiana’s recruiting targets. Among those we’d like to see: Cody Zeller, Matt Carlino, Austin Etherington, D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and others. Again, there is a cost associated for us to provide this type of coverage.

Where you come in:

Collectively, the best way for us to make all of this happen is to ask for your support. We’re not asking for a monthly donation and by no means should you feel obligated. We’ve decided the best way to approach this is essentially have a “donation drive” once before the season starts and then another one in the spring/summer for AAU. Consider the “donation drive” to be underway.

If we’re able to garner the support needed, we’ll be able to deliver on much of what we outlined above and that’s what we’re hopeful will happen. If that isn’t the case, we’ll be limited on what we are able to do and will likely implement some changes.

If you’re able to contribute, please click the Make a Donation button in the top right corner next to the search bar. We look forward to your feedback and questions.

With your new feature, I wanted to add the "Northprot Hoosier Performance Measure"
To determine how a player contributes to the game I add the assists+rebounds-turnovers-fouls=NHPM. You will be amazed to see who really contributes using this formula.

    Alex,
Great site...as you well know. I'll send in a check for $50.00.
You need to give an address so we don't have to ask each time.
My wife has pay pal and I don't like using credit card on line.
I'm still interested in assisting you with logo'd shirts next HH.

Sorry it took me so long guys. I just had to make sure funds were available. Keep up the great work.
    Jaime
  • Thanks Jaime. We appreciate your support.
  • aceman07
I don't comment often during the off-season because I like to analyze games and make my comments then but that doesn't mean that I don't keep up all year with recruiting and other information through this site. I just made my small but budget appropriate donation of $20 and hope you guys continue to provide me with the same great IU coverage and information until I'm an old man!

    Thanks and GO BIG RED!!!
  • Thanks Aceman. Really appreciate the support.
  • Sallad
$25 headed your way, Alex. Pretty disappointed in the tickets I got this year, but at least I'll have ITH.
  • Thank you, Sallad. We appreciate the support.
  • Diesel
Alex - any feed from your interview yesterday? I missed it unfortunately.
  • I believe it's available on the 1070 website: www.1070thefan.com
  • Taskmaster75
Thanks for the blog Alex, good place to get away from the Anti-Lynch talk at Hoosier Scoop :).

In regard to the poll, there's no reason to get angry over it. You took it WAY too far Coachv. Rather than let Alex defend his side of the argument, you slam him like yours is correct no matter the rebuttal. Poor taste sir. You are sounding like a troll.

If you think David Williams doesn't deserve criticism, then you are just plain ignorant. Look at what has happened to him recently, PPG in big basketball events, starting on his AAU team, etc. Nobody here insinuates that they are smarter than the coaches. Everyone understands that they don't. We work with what we are given, and not allowing someone to form their own opinion is just snobbish in my opinion. OFCOURSE Crean knows more than us. That's why he makes millions a year, and I can hope i make that in a lifetime.

Apologies, some people drive me crazy.

Again Alex, can't imagine the time it takes to run a successful and very lively blog. Thanks a bunch :D.
  • HoosierSmitty
I'm basically broke, but if I can still find the money for a case of beer after a long week, I figured I can swing a $30.00 donation for now. Donation is now submitted!

Thank YOU for all you do to keep us informed! This site gets better all the time.
  • Thanks, HoosierSmitty. Looking forward to your comments this season.
  • Kelin Blab
Did my ITH donation, thanks guys for your hard work.......now please gurantee me I will see footage of the Carlino v Teague....as I am guessing I won't get a ticket.

Have heard Teague has BULKED up and his coach said if he actually cared he would be dangerous.......
  • Thanks for the donation, Kelin. Much appreciated.
  • When is that game?
  • Kelin Blab
Jan. 29th at South.....should be a good game.....Pike now has the #30 ranked player in 2013...Zavier Turner.......he puts the Q in Quick
  • iurons
Getting money out of me is hard . Just ask my wife. Just sent a donation to you guys. I read this every morning before work. Thanks for the great site.
  • Thanks, iurons. We appreciate your support.
  • rennieM
Knight's failure to at least have the courtesy of a timely RSVP to the H of F invitation speaks volumes of his character and is something he would never have tolerated from his own players.
  • JerryCT
If the worst that happens on this site is a "poll" question which could be interpreted as "insensitive" then I suggest ITH may well be the best site in the effing world. Geez, lets have some perspective here.

I will admit that folks who criticize any recruit ( like DW ) bother me but this is where those fans need to go to express their concerns. Nothing wrong with it. I just feel that fans are in the worst position to predict how a kid will develop and what role if any he will play on a major college team.
  • MillaRed
I'm with you Jerry. For the record, ripping on the polls on a donation blog is as classless as it gets. These guys are trying to gather funds to keep this thing rolling and you tarnished the hell out of it. You think this helps the drive? I take it you are not a marketing major? Good grief. Alex, my donation will promptly follow this entry.
  • Thanks, Milla. Appreciate your support.
  • Thanks to everyone who has donated thus far. We'll keep this pinned for a few weeks.
  • Go Home Losers!
What is with these people attacking ITH? If you have such a huge problem with a professionally run website (which is free to use) then don't use it! Who are you all to talk all this garbage about it?
  • Off topic, but this doesn't look good for Knight coming to the HOF ceremony.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=459...
  • hoosierboy
I think it is a simple misunderstanding. Alex, you do a wonderful job, and have no reason to apologize. The question is just asking if he will play? It doesn't say anything negative or disrespectful. If he has any competitive nature in him, example (MJ, Phelps) he will use any criticism or doubt of ability to make him tirelessly improve his game.
  • tberry
The latest question may ask "will he play?" BUT seems to me it is just carrying on the idea that has been posted that Williams is not good enough for IU. Posters can plead ignorance and innocence but that has been the focus of discussions all summer about Williams.

IU is not good enough yet to snub player the coach wants.
  • Kelin Blab
IU is absolutely at the point we can snub players........ask Nick Williams, Malik Story and many others who have transferred because the 'talent' writing is on the wall. IU does not recruit everyone and Crean snubs hundreds of players yearly who are not an IU caliber player, EVERY coach does it..........
  • coachv
100% on the money, tberry. we can lead the horses to water.....

alex, how can you ask for $ and censor my comments because it hurts your feelings? first amendment?
  • No one is censoring your comments. When you post something like, "what in the hell makes you qualified to evaluate David Williams?" it doesn't deserve to be published.

Also, first amendment rights don't apply to a privately owned Web Site. We have the right to moderate comments as we see fit. If you were registered for an account with a valid email address, your comments would post automatically without moderation.

Also, my feelings are not hurt. But nice try.
  • coachv
i'm not trying to hurt your feelings. just trying to prevent you from hurting a kid's. they should be off limits.
why doesn't my comment deserve to be published? because you aren't qualified and i called you out for it. why not just answer the question? i know very well first amendment doesn't apply, just trying to remind you what makes our country nice. also, it DOES afford you the protection to write your opinion. you just don't grant your readers the same right if you don't like what they say. that is censorship and should not be subsidized with private donations. at least not mine.

i DO provide my email. i choose not to register anywhere on the internet as i just try to stay off the grid. trying to keep my info and identity safe. reduce spam, etc.
  • coachv
i wish you would take down the classless poll asking if david williams will play here next year. it is nothing more than a veiled way of asking if he is good enough to play for iu. or worse, if you WANT him to come to iu. first of all, nobody, including the people who run this otherwise fine site, have seen him play. nor do they know enough about basketball to make any sort of educated judgement.
secondly, here is a kid, not much more than a child, who has decided to leave his friends and family a thousand miles behind him to come to iu. do you think he won't find out about this poll? how do you suppose it will make him feel? we should support him 100% and show him that while we are rabid hoops fans, we aren't classless idiots.
understand how hard this boy will have to work when he gets here. he's not going to be paid. he'll have little free time. his sacrifice should garner nothing but our respect and as long as he stays out of trouble, he is off limits for criticism.
i, for one, will not donate to this site as long as ith condones or instigates this type of nonsense. if david williams reads this, i apologize for the iu fans who look forward to your arrival. we aren't all jackasses.
  • Greg Amstutz
Coach V, what are you talking about, this is a IU Fan site, we can say or think whatever we want about IU and there players, we are saying out of love for the hoosiers. I have been a IU fan for 28 years, I haven't always agreed with the players that were on the court, even as far back to Chris Reynolds as our point guard, or DJ White not having any help down low, but if I didn't eat, sleep, and bleed cream and crimson, i wouldn't care. If you don't agree with a poll, then don't answer to it.
  • BFowler
I would have to say I think it is a valid question after all the things that have happened since his committment, i.e. - continuing to recruit his position, not coming to campus for a visit, and the quote his father made. The question does not ask if he will attend IU next year, it asks if he will play next year. I doubt he will play much next year, if he sees the court at all, and I would go as far as to say he is a red-shirt candidate in which case he would not "play" at all. There are plenty of questions as he remains somewhat of a "Man of Mystery", and with the Hoosier Scoop article.....just makes you wonder, that's all. However, if he attends and plays for IU, he will get nothing but my support. I cheered for Magnus Pelklowski, Lynn Washington, and Steven Gambles as much as Steve Alford, AJ Guyton, and Eric Gordon. I would even go as far as to say, he will get my respect wherever he attends and plays. I appreciate good students and good people more that I appreciate good athletes who are bad people. I would also add that perhaps his skin is thick enough to know that stuff like this will happen and it may motivate him to prove people wrong.
  • Kelin Blab
coachv...I respectfully disagree with the notion that the poll, ITH, or some of the IU fanbase does not want David Williams to come to IU and succeed. Many of us have said, we fully expect D. Williams to play at IU however there are a lot of questions surround his committment such as:

    1. I don't think he has ever taken an official visit
    2. He did not attend midnight madness with the other 2010 committment
    3. IU continues to recruit his position...Jalen Kendrick, Sheehey, and up to a point Moses Morgan
    4. Is he prepared to contribute to IU next season or does he need a season at a prep school or JUCO.

This is NOT slamming D.Williams, the coaches absolutely know more than we do. But based on these questions, it does leave many to wonder will D.Williams play at IU next season. Coachv if you were honest with yourself, as I am there have been IU players (charlie miller, Andrae Patterson, Pat Knight) that I questioned why they were here and on the floor........it does not make me wrong but a 'fan' just as you are..........I love IU as much as you do, I want IU to do well in all aspects of basketball, but it does not immune IU nor my favorite coach Crean from being questioned......

If David Williams walks out on that court next season, I will cheer as if it is Eric Gordon, until then there are a lot of questions.........
  • As a follow-up, if there wasn't doubt that Williams would play at IU, the poll results wouldn't be what they are. I'm not sure how the poll could be taken as disrespectful. If it said, "Is David Williams good enough to play at IU" then I might place it in that category.

Beyond what Kelin said, did you read the quote his dad gave to Chris Korman last night:

“He’s just thinking about having a good final year on the court and in the classroom. He knows he’s going to college somewhere. Where? We know this is a process.”
  • Hardwood83
How about this as a poll question: "Will IU go undefeated next season?" if you answer 'NO' you are disrespecting the current players skill, talent, commitment and desire, furthermore you have insulted CTC's ability & drive and IU basketball tradition. Frankly I question if you love IU at all.....kinda silly huh? The poll about DW was a question to fans about a potential future IU player, it was hardly a smear campaign.
  • Thanks Hardwood. I think it was taken out of context. The poll wasn't intended to be disrespectful at all. There's uncertainty about whether he'll be at IU next season (and it's supported by the poll results), so we decided to pose the question.
  • IUonetwo
I have to agree with coachv. He has committed to IU, so he is a Hoosier. We shouldn't "boo" one of our own. While you have seen him play, most us haven't. At the least we should give him a chance to prove himself.
  • Kelin Blab
IUonetwo.......Is Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks a Hoosier too? After all he committed to IU, despite never playing a second of college ball.
  • IUonetwo
I don't think David Williams will be going straight to the NBA, for more reasons than one.
  • Kelin Blab
What you don't think David WIlliams is good enough for the NBA. That is pretty classless to say something like that against an Hoosier. We should support him 100% and give him a chance to prove himself.
  • I've watched Williams play in-person. So your claim is incorrect.
  • coachv
    absolutely irrelevent
  • Diesel
Alex, a new poll about Bob Knight? Haven't you learned your lesson yet? Surely you don't think you are qualified to determine whether or not Bob will ever come back to IU. Regardless of how much you think you know Bob's personality and what he will do, you don't. How disrespectful. If that poll ends up being "no", it will only send one message to Bob: "we don't want you." (removing tongue from cheek)
  • IUKYLE94
many don't care whether Coach Knight returns at this point. Olive branches have been extended and 99% of the people invloved in his poorly handled firing are gone. If he doesn't want to return so be it, move on. He is beginning to look like a bitter old man. Also, a poll about some ex-coach isn't an apples to apples comparison. Nice try though.
  • IUKYLE94
Alex, regardless of whether you've seen the kid play, you aren't qualified to determine whether he's a good fit or not. Only the coaching staff can make that determination. The poll you've provided is disprespectful to the kid and the coaching staff. It sends only one message, we don't want you.
  • hoosierboy
I have a very strong feeling that Will Sheehey is going to commit after his visit.
  • CutterInChicago
    "Help is on the way!!!"

I wish I was sending Bracey Wright (or more accurately Deron Williams) but a donation via PayPal was just made. Enjoy the site and I think HoosierSmitty's idea of an "As We See It - Noble observations from Hoosier Hoops Internet Addicts" or something would be a potentially amusing idea.
  • Thanks, Cutter. Appreciate it.
  • HoosierSmitty
Been a while since I've posted, but I haven't stopped reading. Just anxiously awaiting basketball season.

Maybe you can ask for some guest columnists or just get some "as we see it" info if we're able to see any of these guys in person ourselves when you can't make it. I know a lot of us on here take in some of the high school talent from around the state.

Many post their thoughts on the message board, but I'm certain some of us could donate some time as well as money.
  • elmerclifford
who do i sent my money and where
  • You can donate via Pay Pal (click the button near the search bar on the top right portion of the site) or if you'd prefer to mail it, send me an email at alex@insidethehall.com.
  • Indiana Red
You want me to make a donation so that I can continue sitting on my butt, enjoying exclusive IU info and entertainment, while you work hard to provide it? That makes no sense. That is exactly the thinking that doomed the newspapers. I want my blogs like I want my neighbor's Wi-Fi—FOR FREE.

/surfs web for IU website of comparable quality and humor

Damn, you got me. Donation on the way.....

(Seriously, this site is awesome.....I'd gladly give a humble donation. Keep doin what you're doin)
  • Good stuff. Thanks, Indiana Red.
  • Kelin Blab
This made me laugh out loud....good stuff
  • Kelin Blab
Hey guys/ITH supporters...I encourage all of you to donate to support this site, there was a time when I contemplated joining peegs or scout, until I realized the financial committment and the misses shut that down completely....shortly thereafter, I found ITH and the rest is history....

Alex and the gang do a great job and to get to see some of the recruiting talent that I would never have seen is worth the donation.....having never seen zeller, etherington play etc that would be huge for me this season along with the game coverage.....

If that isn't enough.....try to think about your IU life prior to ITH........

Having said that would anyone like to match my $25 (or more) donation I plan to make this week???
  • Sallad
I will be, once I get paid on the 31st.
  • JerryCT
Thanks for the reminder. I have donated in the past and will do so again sometime this week. Thanks for the great site
  • Thanks for your support Jerry. We really appreciate it.
