Josh Selby trims list to six, Hoosiers in the mix

  • 09/27/2009 8:33 pm in

Despite entering the race for Josh Selby less than two weeks ago, Indiana made the list of six schools still in the running for the Lake Clifton (MD) guard. Evan Daniels of Scout.com broke the news on Sunday evening:

“Tonight we sat down as a family and discussed all the schools that were recruiting Josh,” Meashon Witherspoon, Selby’s mother, told Daniels. “We evaluated every school in depth and composed a list of schools we wanted to further explore.”

Also in the running for Selby: Baylor, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami and Syracuse. He’s not expected to sign until the spring and has yet to set up any official visits. Selby is rated the No. 10 player in the 2010 class by Scout.com and No. 4 by Rivals.com.

Well, that's nice – still don't understand the appeal of Baylor, or the basketball side of going to Miami.

At this point, I think it's best to treat this kid as found money. If he's not signing until the spring, that just lends more weight to the thought that recruiting for 2010 should tail off, and more focus given to 2011 and 2012. If he comes, he's a 5-star kid, and you don't say no to that kind of talent, otherwise, just be content to work out the next couple of classes.

I love sports and with the internet and blogs it's now possible to follow every possible aspect of your favorite teams. For the most part, I love this. I religiously follow ITH, Stampede Blue (Colts), Indy Cornrows (Pacers) and 18to88 (Colts). However, it's definitely becoming a problem for me in getting too excited about every potential star player. I was recently reminded to keep my expectations in check when the Colts cut a few guys that most of the blogs and fans loved and expected huge things out of (Marcus Howard was the second coming of Freeney, or at least Mathis). And again when the Irving recruitment went by the wayside, I again was way too disappointed about a guy who could still end up as a huge bust elsewhere.

Unfortunately, I have no will power, and even though our chances with Selby aren't great, I am starting to lose the battle of fighting off excitement. No matter how much I keep saying “it's unlikely we'll even get to a top 3 with him”, I know I'll be disappointed if he doesn't come here.

    Oh well…

Great post. I've been doing the same thing with Selby. But, got excited when I saw that headline. My excitement has been tempered a bit though after seeing Kansas, Kentucky and Syracuse on the list as well.

    Don't get excited, not happening

It's really encouraging to me that CTC can get involved with so many high level recruits because more than anything else in college basketball, talent matters past a certain point. He has had limited time and is trying to talk recruits into a program that, as far as most recruits are concerned, have had no success outside of the 2002 title game run. As our program regains its luster and when we start winning more and more, that is when we will get the five star recruits that will take us to the promised land. So for now, appreciate CTC's 2009 class as the foundation for our future, and know that with Coach's abilities, coaching and recruiting, we will be back on top soon.

Signing in the spring could be interested and play in our favor. While other schools like Ky etc may wrap up their 2010 class we could wait some, while Selby evaluates us over the season. Maybe he is a midnight madness invite….won't get my hopes up given I have become the vice chairmen of the “jerimiah davis fan club”. …..JD I hope you are reading this now that I know you visit ITH…………..

  • Diesel

Crean shows he can get in with these kids, but it's going to take seeing the ship righted to get a few committed. Now if we can just get Kelin in with a few via the ITH website….can't you just hear the Kelin Blab chants at Assembly?

  • GFDave

    Selby will………….decide something later.

  • Hardwood83

Anyway you look at this is good news, Selby is the new Irving. And is Kentucky in on EVERYONE? Geez I get tired of that.

  • Kelin Blab

I would love a Kelin Blab chat….Crean won't see any little Kelin Blab's til the class of 2024….by then it could be Crean coaching in his old age, Mike Davis Jr., Kellen Sampson, Fife, or Coverdale….

  • Kelin Blab

Hardwood…..you should know KY plays by their own rules. Cal plans to recruit 12 new guys each year and oversign by 10 guys……..until he gets caught!

  • psvirsky

It really is all about getting the ship righted. The best thing that could happen for our recruiting is a surprise year. And really, the overall record is important, but I think it could come down to the nationally televised games. If we end up playing .500 ball but getting killed every time we're on TV, recruits will think we still suck. If we we 10 games but half of the games are huge upsets on national TV, recruits will be quicker to buy in to our resurgence.

…looking forward to the Pitt game, the only one I can go to

it's hard to believe we have a shot at him, but apparently we do. I think it is impressive we got in so late & yet are involved in the final decisions. one thing that might work in our favor is, at IU, he'd be the best recruit. at most of those other schools, he'd be one of two or three stars. (ok maybe not miami, baylor) but at those schools, he'd be competing with a stacked roster, where at IU he'd be walking into a developing situation, where he'd probably start from day one. he seems to be really open to the idea of coming to indiana. and who knows what he's thinking. he's already changed his mind once…still – he's house-money, like somebody said. if we get him, great…but be prepared for 2010 being d.will & v.o…

Not saying this is the same or anything, but this kind of has the opposite feel that many of us had with KI. Many on here believe that KI's parents (mainly dad) talked him out of giving IU the same consideration he had. Where I get the feeling Selby's mother is talking him into giving IU the consideration. That doesn't mean we will land him by any means, but they may have liked something they saw during their evaluation.

  • HoosierGirl

Great news! I hope we at least get an official visit out of him. Baylor and Miami aren't nearly on the level as the others…so maybe there is a chance to be in the top 4 with Kansas, KentUCKY, and Syracuse. Then, he has a representative from the Big 12, SEC, Big East, and the Big Ten. If we can get kids on the beautiful IU campus and to see Assembly Hall and the IU faithful at Hoosier Hysteria or even a regular season game if he is waiting til the spring, I think our chances improve significantly! So let's get Selby to visit IU!

  • JerryCT

FY I- Off topic but for those folks in the NYC area I found out that 4 nights 11/18-22 including air at the Ritz Carlton in San Juan is about $600/person for a 6 star hotel. This is through GO Travel. The IU Alumni package is at the Condado and seems expensive given the lesser hotel and less beach.

Lets see , SPA , romantic dinners, IU basketball, warm weather, beach ……………

  • Michael

Need to get him to Hoosier Hysteria…

  • GFDave

We went to see us play in the Bahamas. It was great. Kids and I sat in stands next to the players while they waited for their game, talked with Dakich at breakfast, etc. Met an IU guy that motored his yacht over from the states. You'll have a blast.

  • roninjeffersonville

No Kentucky is not in on EVERYONE. One Rakeem Chrismas come to mind, off the top of my head

  • westracer

I would like to talk about the prospects for the coming season

    1. Who plays in what situations
    2. What is different on offense and defense from last year
    3. What if anything do we know about the practices

  • Kelin Blab

    1. May be too soon but win/loss predicitions would be good
    2. Who should be IU's top recruiting priority at this point, Selby, J.Davis, Zeller, Plumlee
    3. What player will have the biggest impact on the team this year? lots of options, surely lots of opinions and story lines……..
