Stacey Poole no longer considering Indiana

  • 09/14/2009 7:55 am in

This should really come as no surprise after the Victor Oladipo commitment, but Jacksonville (FL) wing Stacey Poole is no longer considering the Hoosiers. The 6-5 Poole was scheduled to take a one-day trip to Indiana next weekend.

As recently as July, Poole spoke highly of the Indiana program and assistant coach Bennie Seltzer: “It’s a big basketball school, not really a football school,” he said. “Everything’s based on basketball at Indiana. I’ve got a nice feel for Coach Seltz. He’s a real good guy.”

Poole is down to South Carolina, Clemson and Kentucky. He’s rated the No. 27 prospect in his class by Rivals.com and No. 58 by Scout.com.

A couple of other recruiting notes from the weekend:

+ Kyrie Irving tweeted the following about his in-home visit from the Hoosier staff on Sunday evening: “Indiana visit went really well…sc.” Dave Telep of Scout.com should have an update later today from Irving.

+ Moses Morgan took his official visit to Bloomington and we’ll try to catch up with Morgan later today for an update.

+ 2011 commitment Austin Etherington was in attendance for IU football’s 23-19 win over Western Michigan at Memorial Stadium.

Well that's too bad but not a huge loss since we are getting pretty stacked on the wing. Maybe he would have been better than Victor, but I think we're all happy with what we have.

A more important question however is about our #1 target. Your twitter feed RT'd KI as saying “Indiana visit went really well…sc.” What does the sc mean? Obviously we probably shouldn't read too much into his comments since he tends to do a good job of politically speaking highly of all the schools, but, for what it's worth, that's a good comment to get. Better than him saying it went okay or just well. I'm glad the NFL season started b/c I need something other than KI to worry about…

I'm still tying to decifer if “they want me to be their point guard” vs. “Indiana visit went really well.” I don't know the first comment seems to stick and very specific. I realize asking this on an I.U. site is not the place to ask this, but is it better to be a point guard for one year at Duke or Indiana in reference to exposure for the NBA. I keep thinking back at Eric Gordon.

Can't get them all- and as mentioned IU doesn't seem to lack for wing players. As long as he doesn't go to pUKe. I still feel pretty good about Irving.

  • I'm not sure what “sc” means. Perhaps it means “silent chuckle”. Google it.

  • The problem right now, especially with a one or two year player, is selling IU as a program that can make a deep run into the tournament. Coming off of a six-win season, other programs are going to put it in the ear of any recruit that IU is still rebuilding. That's just how it works. As for the IU vs. Duke question, I think the exposure would be similar. Both are on national television frequently and the prestige is excellent at both schools.

The only thing that may upset me is that “MAYBE” we would have rather have had Poole over Victor. I haven't seen much on Poole but did see the string of vid's of VO and I liked what I saw. Plus the fact that I read several comments from him about how he loves defense. We can never have too much D. It could have been battle of the Wings and VO won out…Poole should have committed first.

We definitely have to land Irving to complete the class. But save the oversign that will assist our efforts in hopefully landing another big for 11 or 12 or even possilbly this year.

Some think that coach likes to run a heavy guard type of team. I've also read that some of you think we need to have more bigs and other think that coach is just fine. I've been kinda torn between this so I look up some history.

TC's Marquette 2002-03 final four team had: one 6'7, two 6'8's, four 6'10's and five below 6'5.
    Mich St 2008-09 B10 team had: two 6'6s, four 6'8's, one each 6'10, 6'11 and 7'0…seven guys under 6'5.
Kansas 2008 Champ team had: one each of 6'6, 6'8, 6'9, 6'10 and 6'11. Three 6'5 guys and EIGHT guys below 6'4.

IU 2009 Roster: one 6'6, one 6'8, three 6'9, one 6'10 and one 7'0. Nine guys below 6'5.

My point is…I was starting to think that we were not not well rounded but if you look at this years roster we're not all that bad. I still believe we need another PF or center but more importantly someone bigger that can handle the ball and quick on the feet. The lose of Poole does not concern me much as it did before I looked at the numbers.
    Your thoughts…

no surprise with Poole. Always felt like we were on the outside looking in with him. Is still good to have been in consideration with him and it is always good to secure some recruiting ties to Florida. Interesting how now that Darrin Horn is at South Carolina there have been a few guys they are recruiting that we are also after. The Crean/Horn relationship might make for some interesting recruiting battles down the road…and as far as KI goes, I'm on my hands and knees every day: Kyrie, please please please come to IU!

I’m happy with Oladipo, and I’m fine with not getting another wing. Let’s save the scholarships for a PG (Irving please) and PF/C in the 2011 class. “sc” — should commit? Just kidding, but I like it!

  • GFDave

Thanks for doing that research, it always interesting to see comparative stats like that.

I think for this class it doesn't really matter if we land a big player, but for 2011 I'd like to see us get at least 2. You want those big men to be juniors the year after the class of 2009 leaves, IMO.

I am glad Poole was considering IU but I am equally happy we got a guy who is similar athletically and size.

As far as KI…..my thoughts are we are still in great shape. Alex….I could make the case that within our conference we are in better shape than Duke within theirs…Duke's talent level and recruiting has slipped and yes they are still good but this is not your duke of hurley years…..

Having said that I would love a KI committment for 2010 if it didn't happen, I am happy with a J.Davis committment to go along with our Carlino committment for 2011…..

  • IU just won six games and finished last in the Big Ten. I don't see how you could argue that IU is in better shape in the Big Ten than Duke is in the ACC.

  • Julian

haha true but i think he ment that IU was on its way up while Duke is slipping in the ACC

I would not be that unhappy if we don't get a one and done. We don't have the talent this year to make a difference and we are heavy at the point guard. I would love to see us use the scholly for a big that might play. We have 2 7 footers that won't see action this year or next. I thing we are still behind in recruiting, but can make a difference in the next two years. I know everyone loves KI, but we don't need him now. We need him in three years. We should remember, that we will be lucky if we win 12 games. I hate this, because I was there after the 87 championship and throught the Chaney and Henderson years. I lived in Bloomington during the 76 and 81 championship years. Lets not lose focus that we are rebuilding and this will take more than two years to see a B10 championship run.

  • sc….means stay cool

Duke within the ACC talent level has clearly evened out. They are on the same level 'talent' wise as FSU, BC, and Maryland…. UNC and Wake I believe are a cut above. Within that state Duke now has to battle UNC and next door Wake. Visiting Duke is NOT a given anymore….

IU on the other hand, give Crean credit is out recruiting PU within the state, is recruiting on the MSU level, and has fought off OSU within our borders. I believe IU had the highest ranked recruiting class last year with the 09' within the big ten. I just see IU within the conference is on the way up and Duke has leveled off and digressing….hopefully that makes some sense……

For that matter….why would a team finished last in the big ten and Duke fighting over a top 5 player??? It is not grant hills duke anymore…..(your witness)

CraiginOR is no longer considering Stacey Poole.

    nice.

  • Whatever KI chooses I wish him the best…seems like a great kid. I am just happy to be excited about this program again.
