Marquis Teague goes off at Boo Williams

by Alex Bozich in Video | April 27th, 2009

If you need any more convincing that Marquis Teague should be the No. 1 target for Indiana’s 2011 recruiting efforts, I’ve got just the video clip for you. These clips are from the Boo Williams Invitational a couple of weeks ago in Baltimore. Prepare to be entertained:

  • ichaser
    Keep it in state Teague.
  • ichaser
As fans of IU we should do our part in recruiting kids like Teague to IU. Has anyone ever heard of fans of a certain colleges (say IU) filling up high school gymnasiums (like Pikes) with their school colors (cream and crimson) and shirts (crean and crimson) cheering for some of these prospects? Seeing that these kids our in our back yard it would probably be an easy and great way for fans to show our passion and do some recruiting ourselves.
  • George
C'mon Teague....come to IU! We love you already! It's close enough for your friends and family to watch, it's a top program with 5 banners hanging in the rafters, it's a good coach/staff that can develop you for the next level, and you have a chance to be a play in front of the best fans in college basketball!
  • Bob
who is this guy never seen him play?
  • Unknown
I knew the kid could get to the rack but not finish over guys that much taller than him
  • CraiginOR
yeah, but can he beat a triple team or play defense? ( please don't respond it is meant to be funny)
  • JerryCT
    Very very impressive highlights
  • MillaRed
Teague's play reminds me a bit of myself.

    When I'm playing XBox.

Good grief the guy has amazing strength for his size.
  • BobbyDigital
Ha. I was thinking the same thing. Reminds me of Baron Davis in NBA Live 03.
  • GFDave
I'm impressed, but that doesn't matter. So real question is: Is he impressed with IU and Coach Crean? I hope so.
  • Spencer_D
Let me start by saying that I'm all for Teague coming to IU.

But would he be a 2-and-done?
  • jgongora86
I think he is a one in done. One thing that I did not see was a whole lot of passing. Though what he did was amazing, I just want to see how does in that aspect. Man i never knew he could jump that high though. He would look good for the cream and crimson.

Even though he is listed as a point guard, he is NOT, a Jordan Hulls type point guard but more of a scoring guard. I say he is similar to derek rose but with more handle. I am moving towards the ok side with teague being a hoosier given my trust in crean......it is not ez though.

He would give IU a HUGE boost though
  • southsidehitmen
Teague looks good, but I think your friggen crazy to say "Derrick Rose with more handle."

Rose is the most athletic point guard in the NBA...Teague is a kid in high school. Let's just settle down a little bit.
  • Kelin Blab
I have seen both kids play a bunch of times, tv and live....they have the same game, build, both are fast, decent quickness, I will say it with confidence teagues handle is better than derek rose.....TODAY...I know he is a soph, but I say this one with some confidence.....coming from a guy who can take or leave teague coming to IU.

I am a D. Davis guy and would take him over teague or Irving.
  • pacino
He is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! He will look so good in a packed Assembly Hall adding a sixth banner. I can just hear the 18,000 screaming fans. Marquise Teague! If he were smart at all he would go to IU were he would be able to compete for a final four and be an impact player right away. He won't get that at Louisville no matter what they try to tell his dad to get him to play for pitino.
  • HoosierSmitty
Did he throw a shoulder into that guy after that dunk? It kind of looked like it. I mean that was a sweet dunk, but I don't want to see those kinds of actions on the court. What's his M.O. during games? Don't get me wrong, we should have this kid...but what's his personality like? I love seeing players who are pumped up, but is he overzealous on the court with his emotions?
  • Kelin Blab
Umm yes smitty he did throw a shoulder. That is the one thing teague has not be able to shake for awhile is the 'antics'......ask Bloomington South which drubbed pike but it didn't stop the 'antics'....which led to his technical which led to his 5th foul.....
  • HoosierSmitty
That's a little troublesome...but hopefully he can get that together. I just don't want that stuff on the court, regardless of talent level.
  • Kelin Blab
smitty, I will reserve further comment on this issue because it is my "I rather teague go to L'Ville" side that I want to give the kid a chance to shake this...........however.......these 'antics' have been going on for awhile. Keyword ....awhile.
  • GFDave
I watched the video several times to try to see what you are talking about and I honestly can't see it. Maybe there was a bump. Maybe. Maybe a little shrug-off. Maybe. Maybe two guys just trying to get untangled. Maybe. I didn't see anything that was in any way a big deal. Nothing. No cheap shots. No chest to chest stuff. No finger waving or shirt tugging. Nothing.

As far as Kelin's other comments about "antics": I don't know anything about this kid's history, so I'm just reacting to what I've seen in this video.
  • jgongora86
If he's more of a point guard does that mean Matt Carlino will be riding the bench? We need big men in the 6'9 verity. The all guard system does not work ( ask villanova). I want teague but are we actively recruiting any big men for the 2011 class?
  • James
Id be ok with beating teams like Pitt twice in one year and making the final four...granted they ran into a buzzsaw in UNC but that shouldn't matter too much. Like it or not Coach Crean runs an offense that is dominated by guard play. He is never going to go and get the most dominant bigs in the country...would balance be nice? yea it would...but his style is not going to change because he is at IU. That style is what brought him to IU...
-Im all for Teague...watch that kid play again and just keep saying to yourself "he is only 16"!! he is going to be a flat out stud when he is a senior.
  • I know Crean runs a guard-heavy offense to this point, but there is no successful basketball system in the world that doesn't benefit from having a dominant big man.

If you want a national title you need a dominant big and depth behind that dominant big. I like to think that Crean was just unable to recruit that type of player to Marquette, but hopefully the exposure of being the IU coach will allow him too.
  • Kelin Blab
    J-
I agree 100%, I just don't know if there is a shortage of big men or what. I want a back to the basket, shot blocking, dunking, rebounding, BIG MAN. Right now our 2010 and 2011 classes are more guard forward types.
  • BobbyDigital
I think that's what Bawa is for. As raw as he may be he can certainly do those things.
  • johnny
oh my god. little buddys got some crazy moves for a soph. i don't think i could contain myself if we get him and zeller(for the fact we didn't get the others).
  • kmark22
I am not sold on zeller yet.....not sure why. The zellers have not panned out thus far...
  • Here's a video I shot of Teague this past season for those who didn't get a chance to see it:

  • CreamCrimson
Marquis Teague... PRIORITY #1. We have a nice foundation coming in, adding the stars is what we need. Watford and Creek can score and be go-to guys. Teague can come in to that and make that squad explosive.

Out of Teague, Irving, and Ferguson, we need to get at least 1. The Teague/Ferguson combo would make me soil myself.

Teague, Creek, Watford, Ferguson, Elston/Pritchard/Muniru with a sickly deep bench of Jones, Hulls, Carlino, Capobianco, D Williams, Roth. Oh man, I would need to be restrained. Not sure if a roster like that can even be maintained. Something would have to give.

Teague is essential. Ferguson would be beyond thinkable to add to put alongside Watford.
  • slojoe
His moves on the 3-ball and down the lane are very "Gordonesque". I can't tell whether he has the range Gordon did from what I have seen. He does not look as powerful and muscular as Gordon, yet. I can't tell whether he has the crazy hops Gordon came in with. But all in all it's easy to see why his in the top ten in his class.
  • jesse
does it matter that he has a terrible attitude?
  • Kelin Blab
For me Jesse...Hell yes it matters.........
  • HoosierSmitty
After all we've gone through in the past few years...yes it matters. I want another banner hung with pride.

Let's chalk it up to youth for now. He's ridiculously skilled.

All I really know is what I saw in that video and I don't want to see garbage like that from an IU player. As they say...act like you've been there before.
  • Kelin Blab
Smitty I agree. At some point more coaches need to put there foot down with kids. These type of things you don't see at UNC for example. There success is done with a level of "we belong here" and this is how you do it. They play with a lot of emotion and passion but to their credit....Roy doesn't deal with the 'prima dona antics' of some kids and he has the best of the best. I hope IU will go the same route given our recent past with denim shirt/red tie!
  • tg1438
Couldn't agree more with you guys. Winning must not come at the cost of tarnishing the IU name and legacy. Those 5 banners were not hung by players/coaches who were bigger than the game or university. And I hope the next 5 aren't hung by players/coaches with that mentality. There are plenty of classy individuals out there who can play basketball at a high level and get this program out of the shameful state that a previous coach left it in.
  • j
He's 16 and he just threw that kind of dunk down in an AAU tournament. What makes you think he has been there before? Jeez. He's just a kid. The maturity comes when you become, you know, mature. Do you really think Coach Crean will allow immaturity? I think I'd take a chance on that kind of game and try to coach the attitude as well. Let's not start judging things quite yet.
  • pacino
I talked tohis best fried and he said Marquis is clueless. He is always changin his mind on who he likes. He told me that he has recently gained some interest in Kentucky. I aked about him ending up at IU, and he said as of know NO. Bummer, but hopefully we will get him. This is as reliable of a source you can get.
  • jon
this is my boi an he puts it down, from pike high school has alot of potential an plays with alot passion, he has college games as u look how high he gets on his jump shot teague is no risk hes gonna show up every day sometimes u can question his effort like againt l.n. when pitino was there, he plays alot different in school ball but these high light are nicee
