Report: Maurice Sutton to Villanova

  • 05/21/2008 3:37 pm in

According to a report on philly.com, Upper Marlboro (MD) big man Maurice Sutton will attend Villanova. This is not surprising, as IU picked up Tijan Jobe yesterday and are pursuing Emmanuel Negedu as well for 2008.

Sutton was also considering Seton Hall. He’s not among the top 150 players in the 2008 class on Rivals.com and was considered a project by many scouts I’ve talked with.

Update: Here’s what Sutton had to say about choosing Villanova.

“It came down to what God said, what God said goes. When I went to Villanova for a visit, it just felt right. I just felt comfortable with coach [Jay] Wright¬†. . .¬†Everything, his personality, just the way he came in, he’s just so honest. I know his track record. There is something about him I really like. I can really say that I’m going to love having him coach me for how ever many years I’m there. I’ve seen what they have done in the tournament the last few years. I would love to be part of that.”

I know we all got our hopes up for this guy but we will never miss him.

  • still it hurts a little. he had a lot of upside and his AAU coaches/teammates raved about his athleticism. he seems like a high-character kid and i look forward to seeing how he turns out at Nova.

as a side note, can we not do the whole “whatever this kid wasn't going to be much of a player anyway” thing when these prospects dare to commit to a school other than IU? that's the reason why i don't go on the Peegs message boards anymore.

  • BobbyDigital

yea that's not necessarily what i meant. i wanted to see maurice in candy stripes as much as the next guy but there will always be others. it was a very unique situation which led to us taking such interest in him.

i agree with you as far as the extreme hot or cold fans go. 3 weeks ago he was our savior but with nova i'm sure he's garbage. i don't have the stomach for those guys either.

  • I think most people viewed him as a project with potential, but the main interest in Sutton was the size. Now that we've signed Jobe out of nowhere we have another project with size. I think he will end up being a pretty solid play. He may redshirt at nova wich could really benefit him in the long run. I wish him the best of luck.

I am simply not sure how Jobe will work out. Uwe Blab took years to become something, and he had the time to do it. I hope Negedu gives us a serious look.

Is there a drop dead date that Negedu has to decide by to pick a school?

  • No. He won't sign a LOI because the deadline is today. He could wait until late into the summer to decide if it takes that long.

  • Thats what I've been wondering….I've been glued to this damn thing for a day and a half….its taking over my life

  • You say this like it's a bad thing. Ha.

  • hoosier07

welcome to the club! im that guy who sits with ITH open all day and hits refresh every half hour … haha

  • Kelin Blab

    I do the same…..

  • Ditto………

  • at least we are on top of things

  • Kelin Blab

I believe TC may have had a tip that Sutton was going this way and pulled the trigger on TJ…..nevertheless…if we can score Negedu would be HUGE and I could increase our NCAA tourney chances to 45-50% next year……right now with the current roster….35-40%

I also try not to forget we have Jordan Crawford and B-Mac coming back who both could be a pleasant surprise…..not to mention Daniel Moore, the only Indiana All Star on the team (who's name is not metioned under 2008 signees and I don't recall his special writeup either yet some chump with sideburns and a guy who averaged 9ppg got one.)….

  • woodpecker

    ditto…………

  • woodpecker

my hopes are up for Negedu

  • Tyler

Blab, your ongoing spew of love for Daniel Moore is really annoying. We get your point.

Also tough loss on Sutton, but I'm sure Negedu will give us a good hard look.

  • next year may not be that bad……we do stay at home in the preseason for most games. Crawford will be a big key in all of this. He took over some games last year. I think Crean wants to win badly next year and I think the practices will be intense. I think the players will mesh well together and I see this team being the number 5 in the big ten behind ohio state, michigan state, wisonson, and purdue. We may tie for 4. Purdue lost Martin. This team will hopefully have some offensive sets that are effective as well as playing some intense defense. That could be enough of an improvement to pick up where we left off.

  • Love it! Oh man, why does it have to be only May? lol

  • Kelin Blab

Tyler annoyance is my goal until D-Moore gets some love.

  • Hey, gotta love them white kids! They work and put just as much effort forth as anybody else. I always enjoy watching Tabor play, the stats don't show how hard he works.

  • BTOWN40

I love myself too Blab and hope I start at center next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now stop with the man crush will ya!!!!!!

    Sincerely yours,

    D-Moore

  • B_MD

    Ditto…I'm surpirsed I still have a job:)

  • well since we are all checking this thing every 15 minutes…..and we all know sutton is off to nova….lets change the subject…..is tim garl comming back next year or did he get the boot? who is going to draft gordon? Will bobby coach again? will kelin and d-moore be intimate before the big ten tourney? (just kidding ya kelin)

  • Atwater

    me too

  • Atwater

    I'll admit it…I have a bit of a crush on D-moore too. I can't explain it….I just do.

  • BTOWN40

Wish you nothing but the best Sutton. Crean looks to know what he is doing, if nothing else we get the big body we needed even if it's only for rebounds and blocked shots, plus if Jobe doesn't work out we only wasted 2 years on him instead of the 4 Sutton could have used up, thus giving Crean more time to go after an elite big man for 2010.
This Jobe signing could also help with gettin Negedu, if nothing else Jobe can't be worse than Deandre turned out to be plus Jobe doesn't even have to jump to have a higher vertical than Deandre….Go Crean get Negedu signed

  • Kelin,

I thought you were the only one with that “problem.”

  • It would be cool if Gordon would go the pacers, but really any team would be fine with me. lol I am looking forward to watching him play, wish he would have played all season the way he did during the first half.

Yes, I think Bobby will coach again. It is highly doubtfull that he will spend the rest of his life starring in commercials, that just doesn't seem like Bobby to me.

Huh? don't get it about the intimate stuff between Kellen and D-moore.

btw, where did the Matt-freakin'-Roth saying come from? Maybe I just didn't refresh my web brower enough and missed it……..

  • it was just a joke from a couple of posts up

  • bling_tut

I suppose we never had much of a chance, seeing that God personally informed Sutton that he'd like to see him as a Wildcat …

  • PMK

I wish I could channel the spoken word of God to make all of my difficult decisions. I surely would have avoided the chicken soft shell tacos from Taco John's tonight. I shall present a sacrifice to appease the Gods of Potato Ole's to rectify my sins. Thank you for the guidance, Maurice!

  • Kelin Blab

    chicken soft taco's…..NICE

  • MikeinNC

I agree, I think Crean is a savvy recruiter and he had a strong inkling immediately after Sutton's visit that it was probably not going to go his way….it's really not a big deal in this case because Sutton is someone for whom substitutes are available…

  • RGH

Funny thing on espn, the mock draft has Gordon going to the Bucks…. Reunited with Sampson!

  • hoosier07

Kelvin will absolutely take Gordon with the 8th pick … If he is not taken earlier, Kelvin will have his boy back with him in Milwaukee…

  • Oh my goodness! Now wouldn't that be interesting. huh. Was there are reason given for that placement?

  • MillaRed

God also mentioned that Villanova will never make a Final Four. Something Crean will do in the next four years. I knew Sutton was done as soon as we signed Jobe. The only other guy in the country from Africa? Yes this would be a political move to grab Negedu. How many other 7 footers are in the Big Ten? He may be alone in that department.

This team still needs a post presence to open up all of these shooters. It won't be there next year. They are better off running the triangle through Jobe and letting Crawford, Williams, Negedu create off the dribble. They will be guarding our 3-point line for sure.

If we grab Negedu, Crean is nothing short of a genius. Talk about making chicken salad out of chicken sh_t! Where have these kids come from? Look at the other recruits across the Big Ten. Most of them have been set for months. It's impressive.

This team has very young talent and it will be great to watch them fight it out for a starting spot. You guys love Danny Moore. I love Crean. I've never loved another man. But hey, “It's IU. It's IU”

  • RGH

Best available athlete and will allow them to trade Redd.
