6-Banner Sunday: IU basketball wins FISU America Games gold medal

Welcome to another edition of 6-Banner Sunday, a joint production between The Assembly Call and Inside the Hall, where we highlight the five most essential IU sports stories of the past week. 6-Banner Sunday is written by Ari Shifron.
IU concluded play at the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru, with a gold medal. This was not the only major story in the world of college sports, as a court-ordered injunction could make some of last season’s outgoing seniors eligible for another year.
Also, the current IU football team participated in Big Ten media days in Chicago and is preparing for its upcoming fall season.

Banner #1 – IU basketball wins gold at FISU America Games
IU is normally months away from playing competitive basketball in July. However, this summer is an exception, as the Hoosiers, representing the USA, participated in the FISU American Games in Peru.
Showing off their entirely remade team, the Hoosiers dominated lesser competition, winning all games by wide margins, including the tournament final last Monday. The final score was 99-57 in a rematch with the Virgin Islands to win the gold medal.
IU coach Darian DeVries spoke after the win. Also, highlights were posted afterward by Inside the Hall, with the game being streamed on YouTube. Finally, updated stats can be viewed here as well as five takeaways from the event.
Banner #2 – Court order could make outgoing seniors eligible for another season
After their first game in Peru, the US added Sam Alexis to its team, who was a contributor on last year’s IU squad. With Samet Yigitoglu ineligible to play in Peru, Alexis was added to give the coaching staff another frontcourt player for depth and production.
As it turns out, Alexis was among those fighting for an additional year of eligibility following new NCAA rules that take effect next year, allowing five seasons of play with no more appeals or redshirts. However, a judge has now ruled that the eligibility changes must take effect retroactively, allowing Alexis and others to play in 2026-2027. Whether he will choose to play for Indiana or somewhere else is unclear, but IU has an open scholarship should he return to Bloomington.
Banner #3 – IU football takes the spotlight at Big Ten media days
The Hoosiers took part in football’s Big Ten media days, which featured all 18 schools. IU coach Curt Cignetti spoke as one of the event’s main attractions. Whether Indiana can repeat the performance from the fall of 2025 remains to be seen, but expectations are once again high in Bloomington.
Banner #4 – IU football position previews
Proving Indiana is once again a legitimate championship contender will take place on the field beginning next month. However, they are once again expected to be near the top of the conference and amongst the best in college football.
With expectations so high, Inside the Hall continued previewing each position for the roster separately. This week looked at the running backs, wide receivers and quarterbacks.
Banner #5 – Podcast on the Brink and Back Home Network shows
Podcast on the Brink returned this week. On the episode, Brian Tonsoni joined to discuss IU basketball’s games in Peru.
The Back Home Network has many shows. As a result, it was on air several times this week with programming.
Banner #6 – Hoosier Roundup
• Baseball filled out its coaching staff for next spring.
• Volleyball will take part in Big Ten media day next week. Also, a couple of players were honored by the conference, and single-game tickets went on sale for home matches.
