IU basketball crushes the Virgin Islands, wins gold at FISU America Games

IU basketball’s run representing the United States at the FISU America Games concluded on Monday afternoon with another dominant win.

The Hoosiers crushed the Virgin Islands 99-57 in the final this afternoon, winning the United States a gold medal in the event.

Indiana cruised to four comfortable wins in the event, held in Lima, Peru. In addition to beating the Virgin Islands twice, IU also defeated Peru and Chile.

In total, IU outscored its opponents 441-196 in the FISU America Games and largely relied on its bench after the score became lopsided in all four contests.

The average margin of victory for IU in the event – 61.3 points – suggests the competition was not of the caliber the program expected.

Last summer, Baylor participated in the FISU World University Games in Germany and lost to Brazil in the final.

The FISU America Games field, however, included just six other teams, and none of them came within 40 points of the Hoosiers, who will begin their trip back to Bloomington late Tuesday night.

Given the lopsided margins and lack of competition in Lima, the primary value of the trip for IU was the unlimited practices leading up to the event and the opportunity for a brand-new roster to build chemistry ahead of the official start of practice.

In terms of the actual basketball played on Monday afternoon, it featured a familiar script from the first three games.

Indiana opened up a double-figure lead by the end of the first quarter at 25-8 as guard Bryce Lindsay paced the Hoosiers with nine early points.

By halftime, the Hoosiers extended the lead to 52-23 and after three quarters, it was a comfortable 69-43 advantage despite the fact that IU was outscored 20-17 in the third period.

In the fourth quarter, IU flexed its muscle again, outscoring the Virgin Islands 30-14 to wrap up the 42-point victory.

Lindsay led five scorers in double figures with 17 points, with freshman Trevor Manhertz adding 15, Darren Harris 13 and Aiden Sherrell and Sam Alexis with 10 points each.
