6-Banner Sunday is Inside the Hall’s weekly newsletter in partnership with The Assembly Call. More than 9,000 Indiana fans receive the newsletter each week. Welcome to another edition of 6-Banner Sunday, a joint production between The Assembly Call and Inside the Hall where we highlight the five most essential IU basketball stories of the past week, plus take a look at how the other IU sports programs are doing.

The biggest story this week was the confirmed return of a beloved former Hoosier to the IU basketball staff. This was not the only item of interest to come out though as the NCAA has attempted to reign in some of the NIL deals with new guidance. Also, a couple of recruiting nuggets broke this week with a well-known site’s final rankings and a Hoosier target in the transfer portal announcing where he will play college basketball next.

As usual, Podcast On The Brink and AC radio had new episodes and we will as always conclude with a look at how other IU sports are doing.

In a news story that was discussed last week, it was reported that Trayce Jackson-Davis was headed to the NBA combine. That was confirmed on Tuesday as he joins 12 other Big Ten prospects and many other college players hoping to get drafted.

• Hoosier Roundup

Banner #1 – Jordan Hulls named to IU staff

Indirectly IU has replaced one well-liked former Hoosier with another with their latest hire. When Dane Fife was let go at the end of the season, team and recruiting coordinator Brian Walsh slid over to Fife’s assistant coaching gig. Now Walsh’s position will be filled by fan-favorite Jordan Hulls.

Hulls has been playing professionally in Europe since graduating from IU and spent the last six seasons in Germany. He will now move into this new role once his season overseas ends.

Hulls is a Bloomington native and was one of the leaders on the two most beloved Hoosier teams this century when IU made back-to-back Sweet 16’s in 2012 and 2013 and won their first outright Big Ten Title in 20 years.

Also included in the announcement is that Steven Surface will become the new director of basketball operations for the Hoosiers and replace Benny Sander who moved on to Rhode Island to rejoin former IU coach Archie Miller on staff there.

Banner #2 – NCAA issues new NIL guidance

With NIL seemingly out of control at some schools, the NCAA Board Of Directors is trying to put the lid back on the bottle following several possible pay-for-play schemes disguised as name, image, and likeness.

The board issued new guidelines for how NIL is supposed to work and how teams can use it. How or if the NCAA will enforce this is unclear but schools do now have a clear document in writing explaining what can and cannot be done when it comes to name, image, and likeness.

Banner #3 – Final 247Sports recruiting rankings are out for 2022 class

The last recruiting rankings for this incoming freshmen class are out for a well-known site and IU has several highly ranked players in it.

247Sports put out its final numbers for 2022. They were a little harsher in giving five stars to any player than before, as just the top 22 received that honor. However, top prospect Jalen Hood-Schifino is the first four-star player at No. 23 and Malik Reneau is right behind at 34. Rounding out this year’s class for IU is Kaleb Banks at No. 77 and CJ Gunn at No. 107. The biggest jump is Gunn who was much lower down in the 100s and just a three-star player before the new rankings came out. No one else moved more than a few spots.

All incoming freshmen now have four stars by their name for the Hoosiers following Gunn’s rise.

Banner #4 – IU target Dexter Dennis commits to Texas A&M

The last major target for the Hoosiers in the transfer portal made his decision on where he is going to school and it is not Indiana.

Former Wichita State player Dexter Dennis is instead headed to a much warmer college town than Bloomington when he committed to Texas A&M this week. The Hoosiers are out of scholarships unless Trayce Jackson-Davis decides to stay in the draft. As a result, IU may have refused to take on another player until his decision is final.

With Dennis’ choice now made the Hoosiers will have to look elsewhere should TJD’s spot open up.

Banner #5 – Podcast on the Brink and AC Radio

Both Podcast Podcast On The Brink and Assembly Call Radio had new episodes this week.

POTB brought on Jeremy Woo of Sports Illustrated to discuss TJD’s and other Big Ten prospects’ draft stock. Meanwhile, AC Radio returned after being on hiatus for a couple of weeks and talked about all the news topics they missed while off.

Finally, the Grace Berger Show had its final episode of the season as well.

Banner #6 – Hoosier Roundup

• Baseball has played well lately winning their third straight Big Ten series last weekend at Michigan and taking the first game from Minnesota Friday to put themselves in the driver’s seat for a top-eight finish and spot in the Big Ten tournament. They also fell to an elite Louisville team in a somewhat meaningless non-conference game.

• Football has brought in former Hoosier player Rhett Lewis to replace the retiring Buck Suhr as the radio analyst alongside Don Fischer.

• Women’s basketball coach Teri Moren was selected as an assistant for the U18 Team USA this summer.

• Softball’s successful season came to an end following a loss to Nebraska and a defeat in the first game of the Big Ten tournament to Penn State.

• Women’s Golf saw Aine Donegan finish a terrific freshmen season with a 32nd place finish in the NCAA Regionals where she competed as an individual.

• Track and Field is currently competing at the Big Ten championship which still has another day left to go.

• Women’s Tennis brought in a couple of transfers.

• Field Hockey also announced a new transfer.

Thanks for your continued support for The Assembly Call and Inside the Hall. We’ll be back next weekend with a new roundup.

Now go enjoy yourself a 6-banner Sunday.
