After Trayce Jackson-Davis picked up his second foul with 10:21 remaining in the first half, the Hoosiers played its remainder without both Jackson-Davis and Xavier Johnson, who was already on the bench with two fouls. Indiana led by three points (17-14) at this juncture.

From there, a bench-heavy lineup featuring the likes of Tamar Bates, Michael Durr and Anthony Leal was able to punch the lead out to 28-18. A defensive stand that held the Terps scoreless for almost seven minutes was key to this run, as was some varied offense from the Hoosiers.

While Maryland ended up going on a run of its own late in the half to close the gap at 30-27 entering halftime, the bench had effectively held serve against Maryland with Jackson-Davis and Johnson on the bench.

We’ll take a look at Indiana’s offense and defense during this stretch in the latest edition of Film Session:

A drag screen from Jordan Geronimo helps Tamar Bates get going here. Julian Reese is a step slow to get into the action which means his hedge ends up turning into a switch as Bates blows by him at the top of the key.

From there, Race Thompson uses his body to shield Donta Scott, ensuring a clean lane to the rim for Bates.

Bates hasn’t gotten a ton of opportunities out of the ball screen this season, but his north-south ability was fully on display here.
