Film Session: Purdue

While Rob Phinisee got a lot of the headlines after Indiana’s win against Purdue on Thursday night, IU’s other point guard, Xavier Johnson, played a strong game as well.

While Johnson did need 17 shot attempts to get to his 18 points, he made smart decisions with the ball all night, never turning the ball over in 32 minutes of action. Johnson was particularly deft out of high ball screen action, where he made correct reads off different coverages to either score or assists his teammates.

We’ll take a look at Johnson’s offensive work in the latest edition of Film Session:

Here, Johnson uses a staggered ball screen up to from Race Thompson and Trayce Jackson-Davis going left. With Zach Edey in drop coverage and moving over back towards Jackson-Davis on Johnson’s hesitation, all it takes is for Johnson to speed back up and keep penetrating for his eventual score on the other side of the rim.

Good work from Johnson here to read the defense and play off it accordingly.
