Film Session: Illinois

After some two-man action between Thompson and Phinisee on the left wing, Phinisee is freed and takes the 3-pointer:

He misses and Thompson grabs the rebound after it’s batted around, but he has three Illini defenders on his back:

So he passes out to Trey Galloway:

With the Illini’s defense being shuffled up a bit on the rebound, Galloway is marked by Giorgi Bezhanishvili instead of Andre Curbelo. Jordan Geronimo is motioning for Galloway to pass it back up top to re-set things:

But Galloway has other ideas and instead tries breaking down the bigger defender with a cross-over. Dosunmu sees Bezhanishvili in trouble and comes on the help. Franklin stays up top and starts moving left and Dosunmu is quite far from him:

As Galloway gets near the paint, Dosunmu stunts in and Galloway spots Franklin, who’s still moving left:

Galloway gets up in the air and passes out to Franklin, who’s now back in the picture. Curbelo moves on the closeout:

Franklin catches in front of him as Curbelo keeps coming:

Franklin rises up and gets a good look off, connecting on the 3-pointer:

Galloway has shied away from shot attempts since the beginning of the season. But one of his go-to moves is getting near the basket, rising in the air and then passing to a teammate on the perimeter, as seen here. Franklin keeping a big gap from the 3-point line allowed him to lose Dosunmu and the work into his shot on the left wing.
