Devonte – steal of the year?

  • Ms hoosier

The kid was ready to shoot it!!

  • kennygeorge

    Wow!!! All I can say.

  • Turns out I actually had a busier Saturday than I expected, so I couldn’t even pay BTN Plus to watch the festivities. From the highlights, looks like some nice outside shooting. Anything else of note?

  • Courtney Graber

Curtis is quick and can beat people. James is back. Game looked easy for him. When OG gets near the rim he’s going to slam it and get fouled.

  • HoosierStuckInKY

    That’s a lot of 3s!

  • Nice, thanks!

  • JBishop0425

No one talking about Priller’s put back?! But seriously Devonte Green is going to be one hell of a player for us.

  • marcusgresham

    My observations:
–RJ and Newkirk were really going at each other hard (in a good way.)
–Newkirk appears to be a pretty good shooter, which was the one thing that worried me. If he can hit threes he’s going to be tough to handle since he already looks to play defense with serious effort.
–Blackmon was getting assists. Not necessarily flashy passes, but good passes for easy baskets when he probably could have (and I’d say in the past would have,) taken a shot himself. As much as we’ve harped on his defense, I think this is equally important to his success.
–De’Ron Davis a big dude! There is not only height, but bulk all over the front line. Rebounding should not be an issue.
–Jones and Green are scared of no one.
–OG can get away with the 1978 shorts. If you had those thighs you’d wear your shorts up that high, too.
–I felt bad for poor Zach McRoberts. He had to try to guard OG. Try. Not a chance. I think he committed four fouls in the first four minutes of the scrimmage.
–I know we read about Crean saying how big McSwain is. Now I know he wasn’t exaggerating.
–OG guarded every position on the floor.
–I was glad to see Hartman participate in the three-point contest. He only shot set shots, but at least he was out there and moving. I thought he looked depressed when he was announced. Everyone else got to come out dancing, but he couldn’t even crack a smile. I hate it for him.
–No one should ever question how Crean feels about his guys after hearing him choke up talking about Troy Williams making an NBA roster today.
–That dude who won the student dunk contest can GET UP!
–Even this early on you could see there is still a team commitment to ball movement that resulted in wide open threes…and generally if they were open threes they were made threes.
–Tyra Buss can shoot; and man she’s a beautiful girl.
–They have the right coach for the women’s team. I can’t help but think that any recruits in the stands have to absolutely eat it up when she’s out there dancing with the players.
Oh yeah, and this happened, too

  • marcusgresham

If he shoots like that he is!
    Zeisloft with athletic ability.

  • Justin Beard

It’s not that Green found the bottom, it’s that he found it with OG and Rojo contesting him.. Hmmm.. can’t take much from scrimmage at this point, but which way to show concern? Eh, listen to me…Nitpicking a great night for the team…
Looking good fellers. Can’t wait for November.

  • TomJameson

Can’t argue any of your takeaways. Nice picture! Looks like a great night for the team AND you! 😉

  • This was the best “Hoosier Hysteria” I’ve ever seen. It was all on a level above all its predecessors, an all-around top-notch event. The beginning videos and the coach’s speech was really good. I’m not always impressed by Crean’s speechifying, but this was actually pretty good. Also, was this a record for attendance? People have said between 14,000 to 16,000., that’s nearing a sell-out crowd.

Also, this scrimmage was great. Not at all boring. They absolutely shot the lights out and really moved the ball. If this is what they look like in October….look out. Green’s performance speaks for itself and he looked like a sophomore.

  • SCHoosier

Thing about Green..in his recruit tapes the kid really has a crossover and good handle..penetrated the lane whenever he wanted too. Has that talent. At 6-2..he could swap out between PG and SG..DG also talks about how he loves to pester guys when on defense. He’s quiet..humble..and will let his play speak for him. He is gonna get some minutes. They called it a scrimmage but really was a 3 ball shooting drill.

  • Swishmac IU

Awesome offensive performance – go back and watch the video again and tell me how many times you see guards or wings block out on the long shots. Picky I get it, but the last couple years our guards and wings have been pretty solid in that area – Big Ten play required that.

  • marcusgresham

    One more thing.
–Todd Jadlow has a man bun?!

  • Ms hoosier

I know this was a scrimmage and not Kansas, but if our gaurds stay healthy Hoosier Nation is gonna love this team!!! And I’m not so sure that it won’t be a more defensive oriented team!

  • As much as the kids were playing hard, I don’t think they were playing as hard as they will in November. I had the same thought, but no way RJ and OG were defending the way they will when it counts. And of course I’m very happy they didn’t, for the reason that will not be named.

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

Awesome at all levels. Thanks Marcus. Take care.

I think having the renovation complete helps, but things seemed much more organized from a fan perspective. This was the first year we were able to get though all four autograph lines (it helped tremendously that we were only like 15th in line to start at Thomas Bryant’s table, not to mention I don’t ever remember Crean being out signing autographs.)
Having all the entrances available to enter the Hall made for far less chaos when the doors opened, not to mention they had barrels outside where you could walk up and deposit your canned goods before you started to enter (maybe they have done this in the past and we just didn’t realize it.)
Having the autograph session at the beginning also makes it easier for those of us who have longer drives to get home, as we aren’t hanging around an hour later. I didn’t even realize it until I just happened to glance at my watch that we were in the car and it was barely 9:30.

  • I think this team is going to be an incredibly tough defensive team, much more so than last season’s team at its best. In fact, I predict earlier success defensively than I do offensively. Should be lots of fun to watch if you enjoy good defense.

  • I expect if the kids held back anywhere to avoid injury, it was on the defensive end. Plus, in this kind of environment, the fans want to see points scored, not lock-down defense. So, I expect this team is much stronger on defense than they showed in this scrimmage.

  • Hardwood83

I refuse to believe this- never happened…..nope.

  • ConcernedCitizen

Devonte can flat out play! I can’t wait until November!!!

  • marcusgresham

It may have just been a short pony tail to be honest, I couldn’t completely tell.

  • ConcernedCitizen

He’s a marksman just like his brother.

  • Aaron Atz

I drove from Birmingham for the 3rd year in a row to be there. I’m sure by now you’ve seen Curtis Jones jump over Coach Crean in the dunk contest, heard that Devonte Green hit 5 threes in roughly 8 minutes of play, and that the team looked good. I have a feeling that the culture has bought-in and that it just is going to click this year.

  • I get that same sense myself. Should be something special.
