At the Buzzer: North Carolina 101, Indiana 86

  • 03/26/2016 12:25 am in

PHILADELPHIA – Quick thoughts on a 101-86 loss to North Carolina:

How it happened: From the opening tip, Indiana was outmatched on Friday night at the Wells Fargo Center. It started with the Tar Heels hitting a barrage of 3s to start and continued into the second half as UNC’s lead ballooned to 22. Credit the quick start to North Carolina senior point guard Marcus Paige, who hit his first four attempts from long range to get the momentum going early. From there, the Tar Heels built confidence and a lead that was insurmountable for Indiana. The Hoosiers fought to start the second half, but never got closer than 10 in the final 20 minutes. North Carolina, the No. 1 seed in the East Region, marches on to face Notre Dame on Sunday and the Hoosiers will head home.

Standout performer: In his final game in an IU uniform, Yogi Ferrell finished with a game-high 25 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field. But make no mistake about it: This is a loss that will sting for Ferrell for a long time. He ends his career at Indiana as the school’s all-time assist leader and with the record for games played in a Hoosier uniform.

Statistic that stands out: After holding Kentucky to just .94 points per possession in the round of 32 in Des Moines, the Hoosiers allowed the Tar Heels to score 1.42 points per trip with an effective field goal percentage of 60.

Like I said, you have no clue what you’re talking about. The SMU case is completely different. No one on the current UNC team has ever taken any of those questionable classes.

  • Joshmofo1

Yeah. We ran into IMO the best team in the tournament playing the best game of their season. It happens. It sucks.

  • John Mathias

    Classic

  • Zach

Thank you Happy Easter to you as well!

  • IU Parking Tickets

I agree, JM, OG and TB with Rob and JB getting healthy could be really interesting to watch, especially with our transfer and new guys. I was saying in my post that I don’t think we are far from another sweet 16 and possibly a final four in a year or two. I think we are finally fully moving in the right direction.

  • Kris Kompute

Yea, that Stevens shipped sailed once Vic turned into a legit pro in 2012 and we came back in 2013 #1 in the nation.

  • Joshmofo1

Not sure but it’s definitely Creans fault.

  • AJ_IU_ColtsFan

Calipari I believe is clearly better… but at the same time I’d ***NEVER*** want him at IU. I don’t care that he’s better.

I also recall the interest in Pitino by some at the end of Knight’s reign, and the fan backlash at the mere thought of it.

People often throw out names on the thinnest of information. “Yeah, he’s a winning coach”. Yeah, so was the guy who replaced Mike Davis. I can’t speak for others, but **I** don’t ever want to go that route ever again. People need to take care in wishing for another coach. It doesn’t always work out well.

  • Joshmofo1

I’d rather lose with class then win with a dirty program.

  • cbags05

No. You are still a terrible fan for that first post.

    CTC isn’t going anywhere.

  • Shaggy_C

“Used to losing” and “realistic” are synonyms. Only one team gets to hoist the trophy each year. This wasn’t our year. Far better teams fell before us in the tourney and far better teams will fall much more embarrassingly tomorrow and Sunday. Silly to judge a season on one game.

  • Kris Kompute

I literally was about to type about Ben Howland’s situation. He shouldn’t have got fired in the first place. They just wanted a new face. The guy went to 3 straight final fours than an SI story comes out about things that go on at every school.

  • Joshmofo1

Maybe in a year or two. That’s the kind of coach I’d be okay dumping Crean for. Only one with a clear pedigree

  • Kris Kompute

Injuries, refs, seeding. All these damn excuses.

It’s been 8 years. Two full recruiting cycles. Given the one and done culture, you can actually say 4 recruiting cycles.

Sweet 16’s and preseason NCAA bid mysteries don’t cut it at Indiana.

  • Shaggy_C

Agreed. We kept them from scoring off the break and held our own on the glass inside in the first half. Problem was, they were draining 3’s in the halfcourt offense and didn’t need the glass because every shot was a swish. Literally nothing you can do as a coach at that point.

  • Kris Kompute

I’m a terrible fan for being real, honest and backing up my opinion with a legit basketball analysis and you’re a great fan because you don’t agree with me…

    Right.

  • BMusic

Who votes for that B1G COY, anyway? Bucha guys that know less than you, I presume?

  • Zach

Like many have noted, NOBODY is going to beat UNC if they continue to play like that. That was reminiscent of the ’05 and ’09 Heels teams and they’re gonna thrash ND on their way to Houston if they keep it up. Sucks the likely best team played their best game of the season against us, but we have to keep our heads up and be proud of all our guys accomplished this year.

  • SeeingRed

The sobering thing is this game showed how far away from truly elite the program really is. It was a very good year, they overcame some notable injuries, everybody played their guts out and a league title is nothing to sniff at even in a down year for the Big Ten. Still, when you see the depth and talent of a team like UNC, it just hits you upside the head with reality.

It’s hard to see a scenario in which IU will be able to recruit the type of depth and overall talent required to realistically and consistently compete for Elite Eight and a Final 4 appearances. The only way will be to land the rare Romeos that appear in state, and catch lightning in a bottle during that one and done year. Because I don’t see how this numbers game is going to change.

Thanks Yogi, and everybody else who played his last game tonight.

  • ForeverIU

we weren’t supposed to make the tourney? LOL. What has IU Basketball come to?

  • IU Parking Tickets

If we can get half of what we got from our Freshman this year, for next year, then we will be on track to do some major damage. Hope the new guys play Def like JM, OG and TB, and would be nice if Gelon was automatic from 3. I think we are in great shape.

  • Kris Kompute

I’m judging his time at Indiana. 8 years, 3 sweet 16’s. Zero final fours. One time locking down the top in-state recruit.

When did that become the standard for IU basketball?

If his was UK, Duke, Kansas, UNC or UCLA (schools we are constantly mentioned with and who have been to multiple final fours in the past 10 years ) he would be gone.

  • John Mathias

You can cry about Crean, wish for the old days and expect better results. Hate to break it to you but the bottom line is shoe companies control all of basketball now. Not coaches. Did you ever stop and ask yourself how UNC is even eligible for this tournament? Or UK being eligible…ever? They get the recruits, NIKE gets the money, they get the air time, they get the calls and they get to avoid trouble. While the bulk of you sit here and “debate” which direction to go in you are missing the big picture. NCAA basketball is an frigghin joke. Period. Debate away. Time to just enjoy what our team was able to accomplish. This isn’t our fathers NCAA tournament

  • Shaggy_C

Calipari is a mediocre in-game coach, in all honesty. He depends on having a superior team to win games, much like his football counterpart in Nick Saban. His best team (an likely one of the best college teams all-time) got beat by a Crean team helmed by Verdell Jones III. Let that sink in for a second.

  • AJ_IU_ColtsFan

Yeah, no kidding. There were things IU was doing right that just didn’t matter because UNC was just shooting lights out. For example: I was surprised at the half to hear the stat that IU had actually done well on offensive rebounds to that point.

And the foul disparity was nowhere near what I thought it was. The stats ended up 27 to 22. It sure as hell felt worse than that; I literally thought it was a 4 or 5 to 1 ratio, and it was nowhere near that. But regardless, that wasn’t as big a problem as I thought it was. The shooting was. And that’s what doomed us.

  • MFBomb

Hilarious butthurt. IU has two guys–Troy Williams and Robert Johnson–that UNC wanted badly. Let that butthurt and excuse making flow through you.

  • John Mathias

  • Jakedipo

I’d take Tom Crean over any other coach in the country, and so would most other people (hello, coach of the year finalist). Screw the haters. He did a hell of a job this year. Yogi is one of the greatest Hoosiers ever and I have nothing but pride for this team. Can’t wait to see what next year brings. Go Hoosiers and CTC for president!

  • Kris Kompute

I gave a legit analysis about Crean being over his head and people are saying I’m a “terrible fan”.

They need to change the name of this blog to “Stockholm Syndrome”.

  • Kris Kompute

All IU fans aren’t that blind. I agree with the both of you.

  • BMusic

That’s what you call the butthurt calling the butthurt butthurt.

  • Kris Kompute

If Crean went to two final fours in 12 years after winning 3 national titles, there would be nothing to say.

  • Bk39

No way does IU blow up next years season with the players IU will have, having four returning starters ( possibly 5) is not a rebuilding year.

  • Kris Kompute

    I ask again,

WHEN DID SWEET 16’s BECOME THE STANDARD FOR SUCCESS AT INDIANA?

  • MFBomb

Eh? I’m a UNC fan. I’m not butthurt, though I would love to have Troy Williams and Robert Johnson on my team. IU also recruited Theo Pinson and Kennedy Meeks hard. We’ve basically gone head-to-head for recruits lately and both got our share. This John Mathias guy is a moron who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

  • cbags05

    terrible fan.

  • IU Parking Tickets

I think we are finally on the right track. We aren’t going to get the recruits other teams are (duke, unc, uk), but we need to get the top 30-100 guys that stay 3-4 years along with Crean’s diamonds in the rough he finds like OG and Dipo. If our teams keep playing defense like the did this year then I think this is a whole new ball game for us. I think next year will be a great indicator.

  • BMusic

You seemed butthurt by the excuse making.

  • Sam Calbert Schultz

This is the best comment of the night an Im glad someone else understands. Firing Crean will put us back, and for what? We will have people transfer, we will lose recruits. There was not a team out there that was beating UNC tonight.

  • Jakedipo

Yes seriously… Root for another team.

  • John Mathias

Maybe your mommy can hold you on her titty and comfort you and tell you that making up fake classes is all a big old lie and that your UNC team is completely legitimate

  • IU Parking Tickets

I think for me the only thing worse than the Crean haters on this site are the Crean hater haters lol and the “I told you so” people. They complain about the Crean haters after every win just like the Crean haters complain about him after every loss. You guys are doing the exact same thing, and it’s incredibly annoying.

  • Jakedipo

    Good riddance…

  • MFBomb

Maybe your Mommy can teach you that it’s possible to investigate something that occurred in the past that is no longer occurring. I’m sure that logic is hard to understand since you grew up in a meth lab-trailer in Kokomo, but I’m sure you can get there.

  • jat00

Crean is a great coach, recruiter and runs a clean program with kids that want to graduate. I don’t want IU to become another Kentucky if that what it takes to win year in and year out with one and dones. He’ll get them there one year and the right way. It was a great year and it was fun to watch.

  • Kris Kompute

Root for another team because I don’t approve of the fact-backed mediocrity from our head coach…

Great response. I wouldn’t expect anything less from a guy who makes a portmanteau between his name and guy who doesn’t know he exists as his username.

  • Kris Kompute

Since the COY of the year at any level means you are above your peers.

Go study the NBA’s COY award and then get back to me.

  • RB11

At the same time, the last 3 years for this nc team have been: Rd 32, Rd 32, sweet 16. They returned their players, there isn’t a one and done on the roster. Pinson is a beast and is still a role player as a sophomore. And even before that henson stayed 3 or 4 years, hansbrough stayed 4. What has killed IU is our big recruiting pieces, during the last 6 years of real rebuild momentum, have left after 1 to 2 years. Yogi stayed but vonleah, zeller, and could even add dipo (what if he and zeller return in ’14….?). Each of those years we lost experience and continuity to a number of transfers out (or suspensions) of role players as well. The rest of our team has been role players less than the caliber of any of nc’s starting 5. Its truly a miracle that after all that attrition we had a team as strong as we did in ’16 (thank you freshman for shiwing up immediately). We either gotta find a way to retain talent to jr and sr, or bring in more one n dones at once (uk, duke). This above average recruit, early entry, lack of continuity will fall short of either winning strategy ultimately. Hope we see a change of pace in TB and TW coming back. Honestly not excited to see blackmon out there playing on one side of the court again, but please surprise me with all the study time you’ve had!

  • Kris Kompute

You still stalking me? Contribute something more than insults.

  • Jakedipo

No root for another team, because you’re not a real fan… A real fan sticks with their team through the good and bad… Enjoy rooting for UK and PU fake fan. Goodbye and good riddance
