Video: Thomas Bryant DICK’s National Tournament highlights

  • 04/04/2015 5:05 pm in

Recent IU commit Thomas Bryant put up a huge line (27 points, 19 boards) in Huntington Prep’s 73-70 win over Wheeler in the opening round of the DICK’s Sporting Goods High School National Tournament on Thursday.

Bryant’s Huntington Prep team fell in the next round to Oak Hill Academy, 61-51. Bryant has 12 points and six boards in the loss.

Over six minutes of highlights from Bryant’s two-game stint in the tournament are available for viewing in the embedded media player below:

One interesting thing about this video is the announcer stating Bryant says he is an Adidas kid through and through….maybe these shoe deals/affiliations do matter.

  • ScoopGeoff

He is so much better now than his highlights from Jr year… that is dominant low post stuff… Offense – dunks everything near the rim, effective with the pump fake, nice touch on FT’s, and even looked fluid knocking down a couple 3’s…. Defense – rebounds in traffic, didn’t leave feet or brings arms down, blocks from help side, took a charge when needed, great outlet passes… I also loved the way he positioned himself weakside on offense – ready to receive when teammates drive, boxed out defenders to get weakside boards. He is a far better interior player than either Zeller or Vonleh.

  • hoosier11

Pretty sure he meant Thon Maker

We no longer will get bullied by big teams in paint. Also like TB’s comment that “double him and he passes, play him single and he will go to score” He gets it because he knows he will have shooters around him and seems confident in his skill level. Now let us improve our perimeter defense and VALUE the ball.

  • Bill Graham

Great at establishing position, major rebounding upside, and seems willing to do the small things (take charges, make the kick out pass etc.. shooting has upside too…Not the most athletic but his size compensates for that. I think overall if he works on lateral quickness and hits the weights he’s a NBA player after 3 maybe 2 years. We better make some noise next year…

Listen this kid is for REAL I am so happy he is coming to Indiana!
He has it ALL! He can pass, shoot and has a very good eye for passing the ball! IMO He IS the 1 missing link for this Indiana team and a final 4 run IF TROY and YOGI stay! With a really good big man this team moves up big time! I am so thankful Thomas that you chose IU!

  • OhioHoosier

Just gotta get those short strides longer!

  • Bill Graham

Also, I would love to see Alex and the staff answer a mailbag question about if we are done recruiting or not? Also, how CTC and the staff plans to handle the scholarship situation. My guess is that someone “volunteers” their scholarship (looks better in the press than saying Jeremiah or TIm was stripped).

IU gets a big man and UK loses to Wisconsin!!! What a great day!

  • “Ding, Dong the Witch is dead” Long live Bo and the Boyz!!

  • Michael Crawley

What a great day TB commits UK loses. TB you are the man thank you!

  • Rushman

What a win wisconsin. I feel like we should be able to duplicate this next year, especially if we get thon

  • Hoosier Hall

This kid is tough and talented. I can’t believe he isn’t ranked top ten…

  • marcusgresham

Yeah, it’s very important to get Je’Ney Jackson’s replacement into place so he can start working the guys who are already there and soon begin with the incoming guys.
I’m most excited to see what a year in the weight room does for Holt. Remember, the other freshmen were on campus most of the summer but he got there just before classes began. He might never look like Corliss Williamson (that guy lifted on game days,) but he may start developing a physique more like Branden Dawson or Draymond Green.

  • marcusgresham

Maybe Wisconsin can win it all Monday night so Dekker & Hayes feel fulfilled enough to enter the draft.

  • Zach

    He was talking about Maker

  • Guyton25

Kentucky never had a good game against a quality opponent. I had Notre Dame beating them in the Elite 8 and Wisconsin winning it all against Duke. They barely beat ND but I’m glad the basketball Gods gave the hard-working team full of seniors the win over the Freshman/Sophomore NBA squad helmed by Satan.

What a day for IU basketball. The 76′ squad remains the definition of perfection and Thomas Bryant makes everything right in Bloomington.

With TB we should be top 10 and fighting for the B1G championship and a deep run in the tourney. With that said this coach needs to teach solid fundamentals, defense and a different offense than the weave of death for the games where the opponent slows us down. If the coach can coach then we could be great!

  • Hoosier1158

This is great news. Recruiting talent is one part of his responsibility, now coach this team and prove why you are higher paid than Bo.

  • chris

My question is who is going to leave now to make room for him?

  • iuoiu

I have the exact same final and had ND beating UK as well. I think I have my pool locked up! I named my bracket ABK (anyone but Kentucky).

  • VAHoosier

And since you didn’t mention it, the thing that stuck out the most to me was his hands — really good at corralling the ball in traffic. And the perimeter shooting touch is just gravy.

  • marcusgresham

Without naming names, I had a thought that may or may not be a possibility. There are a couple of guys who likely won’t see the floor much if at all next year. They could both benefit from a year of actually playing. It wouldn’t be a bad idea for them to go to a junior college for a year and possibly return for their junior/senior seasons. I doubt that will happen but it wouldn’t be a terrible option.

  • Arch Puddington

I agree about his interior play being better than Zeller or Vonleh. In addition to all the moves and skills on display, there is a brute force element to his game that even Vonleh didn’t have. At the 5:05 mark of the video he simply overwhelms Rodney Miller, who is 6’11″/245 and being recruited by Duke, Kansas, and others, and then he does it at the 5:40 mark against Daniel Giddens, who is 6’10″/240 and going to Ohio State. Both plays are unlike any made by a Hoosier since at least DJ White, and Bryant appears to have a better all-around game than DJ. I said in a previous post that he is not enough by himself to propel us to Final Four status, and I still think that, but there is more to this kid than I thought.

  • HannerTime Hoosier

The Badgers defeated pUKe by out-rebounding them by 12 and making 6 additional 3 pointers, while pUKe shot 50% from the field and 90% from the FT line. To get to the Final 4 these days the coach MUST be a wizard

  • SilentBob

You better mention that Tom Crean could never do such a thing like you have been doing all NCAA tournament long…… People might get confused….

  • vanpastorman

I really liked what I saw on this video. These are quality opponents Bryant is going against. Good stuff.

  • HannerTime Hoosier

No need, the profound jump in his coaching orchestration is apparent to all.

  • SilentBob

Well don’t waste your time replying to me then! Go look at the Duke Michigan State box score and tell me what Ya find that Tom could never do!

  • BigAd007

Kid looks tough. Glad he didn’t take the announcers advice and intentionally miss a FT up 2 with 3 seconds left.

  • IUBizmark

And finally end the Big Ten’s national championship drought.

  • Saw him make a few threes in that video. How normal/abnormal is that for TB? Anybody have stats on his FG%?

  • BeatDuke

Old user name of “BeatWisconsin” is officially retired. I’m mostly over my jealousy of the Wisconsin program – so I am all in for a Bucky victory tomorrow night (I live in Madison). A Wisconsin victory makes the BigTen look good and puts the recent IU skid against them in context.

    On Wisconsin!

  • inLinE6

I still remember when we were full out chasing Raymond Spalding. We were heavy favorite but he kept waiting until Louisville offered him, then he spurned us. We wouldn’t have had the opportunity to land Bryant were Spalding committed to us. IMO, Bryant is so much better than Spalding in every measurable way.

  • TomJameson

Like you Arch, I think there’s more to this young man that I first thought. I normally take into account it’s a highlight reel, but it’s not like he accidently made those skill moves under the basket. I was hoping we might have Thomas for 2 years, but if he comes out looking good against the B1G physical play, well, I think he could be easily gone in one.

The only problem with that is we will be looking for an inside presence next year, plus we would need RJ to step up and fill Yogis shoes at the point.

Almost sounds like a rebuilding year next year … at least to a degree.

  • Hoosier Hall

Spalding is a good player but yeah, its not even close between him and Bryant. That being said, I think Diamond Stone is probably the best big man in this class. Since he committed to Maryland, Bryant will have at least 1 opportunity (at home) to prove me wrong.

  • inLinE6

Diamond Stone is not the best big man – Ben Simmons seemed to be, at least what it stands for now. But he’s higher rated than Bryant. Having said that, the ranking doesn’t say much. Stone is 30 lbs heavier than Bryant and looks slower. They’re with similar height. Stone has 7’3.5 wingspan versus Bryant’s 7’6. Watched Stone and Bryant 1 on 1 at McD AA’s practice scrimmage, and Bryant snapped a steal and dunked it. Not taking anything away from Stone, as he had been recruited by us as well and he’s a legit player. But Bryant seemed to fit our bill better. Crean’s criteria for the big man – quick footwork, soft hands, run the floor hard, and with ENORMOUS wingspan. I see Bryant’s ranking move up a few spots (at least) in the final 2015 recruit rankings (his last a few games were impressive, whereas some of the top recruits finished the season).

  • Rational Hoosier

If we can replace April and Priller with Thon Maker and Thomas Bryant…Christmas comes early for this Hoosier fan

Great comment, especially liked the, ” Fr/So NBA squad helmed by Satan ” part, instant classic ! ND over pUKe in the Elite 8 must have been the popular pick as, like you and iuoiu, I had it that way on mine too. Have UW and Duke in the final game. and I won’t lie, I have Duke winning it on mine. After UW beating the team helmed by Satan (man I love that one and plan on regularly using it in the future with your permission) I’m thinking that I probably have that last game backwards. In the interest of full disclosure I had my point total at 141.

My bracket is named that EVERY year. Had ND beating the Fr/So NBA team helmed by Satan (Guyton25 created an instant classic with that one) on mine as well.

In a broad view type of way that pretty much covers it.
