Indiana announces Hanner Mosquera-Perea is out indefinitely with right knee injury

Indiana confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that junior forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea has suffered an injury to his right knee during practice and is out “indefinitely,” according to a press release sent out by the program.

Mosquera-Perea has started all 16 games for the Hoosiers this season and is averaging 7.4 points and 5.0 rebounds in more than 20 minutes per game.

The full press release is available after the jump:

Indiana University forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea, who has started all 16 games for the Hoosiers this season, suffered an injury to his right knee in practice and will be out indefinitely.

“There is no question this is a blow to Hanner and definitely a blow to our team,” said IU Coach Tom Crean. “He does a lot for us.  The important thing right now is Hanner’s recovery and rehabilitation.”  “He has made a lot of strides this season and we are disappointed for him, but expect him to come back stronger than ever.”

The 6-9 native of Columbia was averaging 7.6 points and 5.2 rebounds and was among the leaders in the Big Ten in blocked shots with 24.  His best game of the year was a 12-point, 10-rebound performance on the road at Nebraska.

“With Hanner out, we will need everyone ready to do a little more,” added Crean. “We need to continue our focus on rebounding, defense and all the little things it takes to be successful. We are not a team where you define a player by his position. We will have five basketball players out there who understand that our court awareness has to be at an all-time high. I expect our players will be up for the challenge.”

Reading the last quote, we are going small tonight…. Get ready

It went from 2-4 weeks to indefinitely. Wonder if we will see him play again this year.

I was sorry to see it go from 2-4 weeks to indefinitely, too. We are going to miss Hanner a lot, I think. But, maybe, it still will be only 2 to 4 weeks and the program is just being cautious in how they label it. We can hope so anyway.

Why does it feel like this year is plagued with the worst luck? I mean even IUFB with Sudfeld out for the season after, what, week 3? Well looks like my boy Emmitt will be the go-to guy and maybe this will mean Crean will finally notice there’s a 7 foot dude at the end of the bench named Jeremiah April… they’ve probably been putting him in the weight room since he’s gotten here to bulk him up so he should be ready to roll.

Okay, now I get it. It’s a conspiracy. It will be Bennie Seltzer at the 5, if position is not important.

Very tough loss. Some people have been clamoring for it, but now is Emmit’s opportunity and I hope he plays the same way he’s been playing…Defense and energy is the key.

When Tom Crean was asked about PSU missing John Johnson and
he said it might help rally the Nittany Lions and give them much more of a
“tight circle”. Let’s hope that the loss of HMP can produce the same “tight circle” for Indiana.

My guess is Stan is overdue for a great game.

Maybe they can repair his knee and he can come back and be a player most never thought he would be. See example: Colin Hartman

OUCH! This was my biggest fear heading into the season. Need the whole team to step up and help fill the void. Shall be interesting to see how this shakes out to say the least. Go Hosiers!

  • AUKevin

    Priller Time?!…….too soon.

  • Bill

If I were a 5 star center that can run the floor …. I would sign tomorrow. Not only because you could anchor a final four squad , you would be the talk of the country on how u were the key

So, from 2-4 weeks to indefinitely. I don’t like the word indefinitely and I feel it usually means they’re not coming back. As much as i like the idea of Emmitt getting more playing time, we really need HMP b/c we have absolutely no depth at the 5.

  • Let’s hope for a strong and speedy recovery. Maybe the time away will give him some perspective, light a fire in him, and allow him to develop a deeper understanding of the game and his role on this team. Bad loss.

I’m hoping that April, and even Priller get the chance to back up Holt

Nice of them to let us all know given its been on other media all day. Privacy issues I guess.

Tonight’s game announcers said HMP dislocated his kneecap. If that is the case and he heals relatively fast he will likely be back in 2-4 weeks but may be playing with some kind of knee brace.

You were right he had a career night
