ITH Super Happy Fun Time Coaching Search: Anthony Grant

  • 03/31/2008 1:02 pm in

agrant.jpgKelvin is out the door and Dan is not our man, so that can only mean one thing: It’s coaching search time! Here’s a look at the candidates that could land in Bloomington. We’ll give you the pros, the cons and the bottom line. This afternoon: Virginia Commonwealth’s Anthony Grant.

Pros: The 40-year old Grant spent 10 years with Billy Donovan as an assistant before accepting the head coaching gig at VCU in April of 2006. At Florida, he was Donovan’s right hand man and was the lead recruiter for many of the players who led the Gators to back-to-back titles. In two seasons at VCU, Grant is 52-14 and in 2007, his Rams reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a win over Duke. Grant would be a long-term solution and his prowess in the recruiting world could help return top talent to Bloomington. In his time at Florida, he helped bring nine McDonald’s All-Americans and four first round NBA draft picks into the program.

Cons: Like some of the other candidates we’ve profiled, Grant’s lack of head coaching experience above the mid major level might be frowned upon by the “blue ribbon” committee. On the surface, he doesn’t seem to have any ties to the state of Indiana or to the Big Ten having played at Dayton and having coached his entire career in Florida and on the east coast. When LSU got rid of John Brady in February, it seemed to be a foregone conclusion that Grant would land in Baton Rouge, but LSU may be heading in a different direction with its search opening up the possibility for IU interest.

Bottom line: If IU decides to go with an up and coming coach, they’d be hard pressed to find a better resume than Grant’s. He was an instrumental part of Florida’s back-to-back national championship and helped Donovan build the program from relative obscurity. Most speculation has him ending up in the SEC, but with South Carolina moving towards Darrin Horn and LSU interest possibly waning, Grant could get a look and some consideration from the decision makers in Bloomington.

Hey everyone can breathe a little easier…Alford just signed a 3yr extension with New Mexico. I personally thought he would have been an alright choice, apparently he has a top 15 recruiting class coming in next season

I hears a very sobering commentary or rant on IU today that hits home for us all…..from JMV on WNDE….whom I like a ton….

JMV said, IU nation deal with it, IU is a destination job but we are going to HAVE to go through a rebuilding process and if, Armon, Ellis, and the others want to leave…..”Don't let the door hit you in the *&%$$…..”

This is a tough pill to swallow but a true one.
    I don't want a one and done coach…..
I don't want players getting suspended for “stuff:”
I don't want to look for another coach in 5 years…..
I don't want a bunch of one and done players……
I don't want ANY hint of preparing players for the NBA…you come to IU to play for IU, not a contract……….

    I WANT Indiana kids…..
I want the Steve Eyl player to become relevant again…the human SCREENER…..
I WANT to watch a team that will play hard every night…..
I WANT a coach who will build/rebuild the program that includes on the court, off the court, and rebuild the name on the front and not on the back….
I WANT Indiana to be the BEST program in state and take back what Butler and Purdue have stolen from them……the IU way of doing things…….
I could care less how many IU players are in the NBA……I want IU players playing next weekend………
I WANT to watch Matt “freakin” Roth run off screens for 3-4 years at IU
I WANT to see kids get as pumped about a charge taken than an alley oop…..
I WANT a coach who coaches the team and not just players, and who will not only go to Lawrence North to recruit kids but also to Yorktown…….

Having said all of this………..If I read this enough and put names in a hat that could get this done…….then my candidates are….Brownell, Whitman, Grant, …thats if Miller says no.

I am fed up with this BIG name garbage…A BIG name got us in this situtation. If guys want to leave….IU will survive…right Vaden, Keeling, Shaw, Recker, Owens, Funderburke, and the list goes on and on……

A team like Davidson shows you in College if you have a GOOD team with GOOD players who do the right things you can compete with ANYONE…even a 5 star squad like Kansas. Now although Davidson didn't make it over the hump, if you recruit Indiana well, like Purdue and Butler has, you will be in the mix for years to come given the talent pool here…..

They are not 100% gone. If we get a coach in the next week or so we can still keep them. I dont want to see Armon go.

The kids have been hurt by the way this was handled and they cannot , at their young age, take responsibility for their teams late collapse.

All the more reason it seems for a coach change by Thursday…………even though I donot think the deadline was wise.

I like Ellis and especially Bassett but they need to live and learn. Practicing patience right now would be good for them and all of us

Since your post got overshadowed by the late breaking news let me be the first and hopefully not the only one who loved this post …………….even though your candidates are a near miss.

I think we all need to relax and show we can handle pressure even if the players cannot

So Dakich kicks 2 guys off the team that he is the interim coach of and that is acceptable to his boss? How can a de facto coach kick guys off a team and undermine a search for a new coach? What coach will want to come in knowing he has no chance to keep these guys? The new coach should be making these decisions, not Dan. If I was Greenspan, I would pull DD aside and rip up his contract and send his arrogant ass out the door. He is resorting to the tactics of the players and is just destroying the program because he realizes he is not going to be the head coach. He isn't head coach material and this just adds to that thought. Do I think players should be disciplined for missing meetings? You bet. But I think you let it ride until a new coach is hired, advise new coach and let new coach deal with it in a way he sees fit. What meetings could be taking place that have any relevance at this point? The program is in limbo. There's nothing to discuss right now. It's wait until the new coach comes in and then there is some meaning to it. Dakich just lost whatever fondness I had left for him. He looks like a fool.

Don't have to worry about Grant bolting for South Carolina. Western Kentucky's coach already did.

Wow…This has to be the most piss poor organization and program in the country right now. While we have the Pabst Blue Ribbon Committee, comprised of an ex football player and the former soccer head coach, our current interim coach is kicking kids off the team. Our new coach will have to hold tryouts at the SRSC to field a team. Who is running this show? If you are going to hire Dan Dakich, fine! Do it and tell people so we don't look stupid for letting a lame duck coach kick kids off a team that won't even be his anymore!

    I am torn here…..

On one hand, I have heard TOO MUCH stuff about players on the team “inhaling” that ….where there is smoke there may be fire…Not accusing any of these kids of that but suspensions before the season, during the season, and after the season is utterly ridiculous….Lets not forget, no matter what the label is at this time Dak IS the coach and they have to do what HE says……

On the other hand……..the kids know he more than likely WON't be the coach for long so his authority is somewhat undermined. Maybe Greenspan should have made this call but it is a tough situtation for an interim coach, who at the very least should get a look and some position.

My personal thoughts….Kids you are on scholarship for INDIANA university, NOT the KS on your shoes or Armon or Jamarcus University but INDIANA U…the University is Paying your tution, NOT the KS on your shoes…..at what point will YOU stop revolting and REALIZE it is INDIANA U…not YOU and then INDIANA…..

Damn I ought to patten that last line….give me points people I am on fire tonight (just pissed at this situtation)

I think Dakich is good for the program, not as a head coach, but definitely as an assistant, and I was of the thinking that whoever the new coach ended up being, that Dakich should remain on the staff.

I have now completely changed that opinion. I'm all for discipline and a clean honest program, but this guy is the interim coach and highly unlikely to remain the head coach. Unless the players we arrested (which did not happen, every report is that they skipped a meeting), this coach should not have this authority. Who does he think he is? This completely undermines whoever the eventual coach is, and SHOULD all but eliminate his chances of getting the fulltime job.

OK, two kids get kicked off the team. How many players did Knight kick off? I heard he kicked off the entire team one night…

The kids may be kicked off but can they come back? Is Dakich just proving a point to them?

I was in this guys corner (as I said above to remain an assistant, but definitely play a role in the program) but I think he should be removed immediately as interim coach, and the players should be reinstated, until a new coach is named.

That coach can then look at the situation and determine if the players should remain on the team.
