At the Buzzer: Kentucky 72, Indiana 60

  • 10h ago

Quick thoughts on a 72-60 loss at Kentucky:

How it happened

Indiana played far from its best half of basketball in the opening 20 minutes at Rupp Arena. The Hoosiers shot just 9-for-22 from the field and only 3-for-14 on 3s while turning it over six times. Those aren’t numbers that will generate a lead on the road in many games. But Indiana led 39-32 at the break as Kentucky shot even worse – 9-for-28 from the field and 1-for-9 on 3s.

The bright spot for the Hoosiers was the free-throw line. IU got to the line 19 times and made 18 of those attempts. Kentucky, meanwhile, was just 13-for-21 from the stripe. Lamar Wilkerson, who picked up three fouls in just 11 first-half minutes, led IU with 12 points while Tucker DeVries added nine in 19 minutes.

After Indiana stretched the lead to eight at 45-37 on a pair of free throws from DeVries, Kentucky answered with five straight points to make it 45-42 at the under-16 media timeout. After the Hoosiers stretched it to 49-42, the Wildcats responded with an 8-0 run to make it 50-49, forcing Darian DeVries to use a timeout. By the under-12 media timeout, Kentucky’s lead was 52-51. Wilkerson, saddled with four fouls, reentered the game with 9:30 to play. The Wildcats, however, continued to stretch the lead.

Out of the timeout, Kentucky stretched its run to 17-2 to claim a 59-51 lead with 8:02 left. After a Jaland Lowe layup made it 65-54 Kentucky with 5:23 left, DeVries had to burn another timeout. The Hoosiers scored the next four points, which included a layup from Wilkerson and a jumper from DeVries, to get within seven at 65-58 with 3:42 to play. But that was as close as the Hoosiers would get the rest of the way as Kentucky pushed the lead back to double digits and the Hoosiers suffered their third loss in 11 games.

Standout performers

Wilkerson finished with 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting in 22 minutes due to foul trouble.

Statistics that stand out

Indiana’s 18 turnovers led to 23 points for Kentucky. The Wildcats also won the second-chance points battle 18-6. The Hoosiers shot a dreadful 4-for-24 on 3s.

Up next for IU

The Hoosiers return to Bloomington and will play Chicago State on Saturday, December 20. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on B1G+.
