Finally, the first big test on the road is here.
For the first time in 2026, Indiana will face a strong team in a hostile environment. Both Indiana and Nebraska enter the week 5-0. Neither team has faced top-tier competition.

Meet the Cornhuskers
Nebraska is in its fourth year under head coach Matt Rhule.
Rhule has not led the Huskers to a season with more than seven wins, but he is off to the best start of his tenure. The Huskers are 5-0 with Big Ten wins against Michigan State and Maryland.
They rank fourth in the conference at 43.6 points per game, one spot behind Indiana’s 44.2. Defensively, Nebraska has allowed 14.2 points per game, also fourth in the conference. It averages the fifth-most yards per game and the third-most rushing yards per game, while allowing the sixth-fewest yards per game.
Nebraska has been a top-half Big Ten team statistically, but it still has to prove itself against tough opponents.
The Huskers are coming off a 48-23 win over Maryland (2-3, 0-2 B1G), but were down 23-14 in the first half.
Nebraska still has many questions to answer. Many should be on Saturday.

Storylines
The road atmosphere
Indiana did not have to use a silent count on the road at Rutgers last week. By the end of the game, Indiana’s fans were louder and more abundant. The Hoosiers prepared for it all week, blasting crowd noise into their practices.
While Indiana has used the silent count multiple times, many tend to think back to Ohio State in 2024. The Buckeyes got an easy read on it; Indiana’s players couldn’t hear each other or communicate, and the silent count was an absolute disaster.
Last year, on the road against Iowa and Oregon, it was much cleaner and more successful. Indiana has a veteran offensive line with players who have been in big atmospheres and played the silent count.
Indiana seemed to figure it out in 2025. This will be its first use in 2026.
The quarterback battle
This game will be a first test for both starting quarterbacks, just in different ways.
For Indiana’s Josh Hoover, Saturday will be the first big game this season on the road against a good team in a tough atmosphere. Northwestern was a big game, but it was at home and didn’t carry the same weight as the Nebraska game. Rutgers was on the road, but it was nowhere near as big.
Hoover has looked tremendous thus far. He has thrown for 15 touchdowns and has not turned the ball over. He is completing passes at a 71-percent rate. His best game came last week in Indiana’s first road game.
How will he handle the pressure of a big road game?
On the other side, Nebraska quarterback Anthony Colandrea has completed 66 percent of his passes with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also adds a dual-threat ability, with 276 yards on the ground thus far.
Colandrea has done it against Ohio, Bowling Green, North Dakota, Michigan State and Maryland. None of those teams have beaten a Power Four opponent this season.
How will Colandrea play against what will certainly be the best defense he has seen as Nebraska’s quarterback?
The measuring stick
The biggest takeaway from this game is that it serves as an early measuring stick for both Indiana and Nebraska. It is a chance for both programs to prove they are legit contenders this season.
Both enter 5-0, mostly against weaker competition. Both will give each other their best shot.
Look back to 2024 for a similar matchup. Indiana hosted Nebraska in a sellout. The Hoosiers were 6-0. The Huskers were 5-1. Indiana smacked Nebraska 56-7 and proved it could be a legit team. Nebraska began to fade.
That is not to say the result of the game on Saturday will determine how each team’s season will go. It could show the trajectory and the potential of both programs in the 2026 season.
Outlook
So far this season, this matchup is the most intriguing for Indiana. The road environment is the toughest yet. The opponent may be as well.
It is hard to know how Indiana will play, but Curt Cignetti does have a history of pounding opponents in games that are supposed to be close. Will this be the latest in a long list of such performances?
We will soon find out.
This Nebraska team should put up a much better fight than the 2024 edition of this matchup.
