IU basketball rolls past Chile, advances to the finals of the FISU America Games

For the third straight game, IU basketball had no problem with its opponent in the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru.

The Hoosiers, representing the United States, rolled to an easy 107-40 win against Chile in the semifinals of the event on Saturday afternoon.

The resounding victory advanced IU to the finals of the event on Monday, where it will face the Virgin Islands, which defeated Argentina 63-61 in the first semifinal on Saturday afternoon.

With the Virgin Islands’ win, IU will face an opponent it has already defeated easily. The Hoosiers crushed the Virgin Islands 120-63 on Thursday in group-stage play.

In Saturday afternoon’s win, freshman Vaughn Karvala moved into the starting lineup following his 32-point game against the Virgin Islands.

Karvala, along with Markus Burton, Bryce Lindsay, Jaeden Mustaf and Aiden Sherrell, is the third different starting lineup the Hoosiers have used in the FISU America Games.

The lineup, however, didn’t matter much as the Hoosiers again cruised to an easy victory.

In the opening period, Sherrell led the way, scoring 10 points as IU built a comfortable 34-12 lead. Darren Harris was effective off the bench, scoring seven points, including a 3-pointer.

The second quarter brought more IU domination, as it outscored Chile 31-8. Prince-Alexander Moody and Harris each had six points in the quarter as the Hoosiers went into intermission with a 65-20 lead.

At halftime, Sherrell led IU 14 points while Harris had 13 and Sam Alexis had 10, giving the Hoosiers three players in double figures.

IU mostly played its bench in the second half, resting most of the starters for the entirety of the second half in its third straight lopsided win.

Monday’s final against the Virgin Islands will tip at approximately 4 p.m. ET.

Through three games in Peru, IU has outscored its opponents 342-139, an average of 67.6 points per game.
