Player stats and observations from IU basketball’s exhibition win ahead of FISU America Games

IU basketball, representing the United States, rolled to a 98-64 win on Wednesday night in an exhibition against Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf of Canada at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

The Hoosiers depart on Saturday for the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru.

Here are player observations and statistics from the exhibition:

Trevor Manhertz

Stats: 10 points on 3-for-8 shooting from the field, including 2-for-7 on 3-pointers and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Manhertz had four rebounds and an assist in 22 minutes.

The left-handed freshman wing had a couple of 3-pointers and had a nice drive to the rim. He’ll need to get stronger to carve out a role in his first season and avoid being pushed around in the Big Ten.

Darren Harris

Stats: 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field, including 3-for-7 on 3-pointers. Harris had three rebounds and a turnover in 22 minutes.

He had a team-high three made 3-pointers and shot the ball with confidence. He’s not really a ball handler or distributor but will provide floor spacing. Harris looks like the kind of player who can get hot and make four or five 3-pointers in a game.

Bryce Lindsay

Stats: 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field, including 1-for-6 on 3-pointers. Lindsay had six assists, three steals, a rebound and a turnover in 24 minutes.

Lindsay had one of the better overall performances of the night. He is crafty with the ball, doesn’t hesitate to look for his shot and also tied for the team-high with six assists. He looks like a competitor and was one of the better defenders.

Markus Burton

Stats: 11 points on 3-for-6 shooting from the field, including 0-for-2 on 3-pointers and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Burton had six assists, six rebounds, three steals, three turnovers and a blocked shot in 22 minutes.

He didn’t force anything and stuffed the stat sheet. He can get where he wants with the ball off the dribble and still looks like he’s trying to feel out playing with IU’s big men. He did make a few unnecessary fouls.

Prince-Alexander Moody

Stats: 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting on the field, including 3-for-7 on 3-pointers. Moody had five steals, three assists, three rebounds and two turnovers in 17 minutes.

A clear bright spot as he plays with a lot of enthusiasm and confidence. He didn’t look like a freshman and looked like he belonged on the floor. Moody made perimeter shots and his five steals were a team-high.

Trent Sisley

Stats: Nine points on 3-for-4 shooting, including 0-for-1 on 3-pointers and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Sisley had four rebounds, three steals and one assist in 14 minutes.

He appears to be stronger and more confident than last season and was solid on the boards. Sisley should provide positive energy as a backup who will primarily play the four. He could start in Peru, with Yigitoglu unavailable to play in Peru.

Samet Yigitoglu

Stats: Six points on 3-for-4 shooting. Yigitoglu had five rebounds, three turnovers and a blocked shot in 22 minutes.

When he got the ball to the rim, he finished well, but he had several plays in which he brought the ball down in traffic and lost it to smaller defenders. He’ll be able to manufacture points on the offensive glass and will be a deterrent at the rim if he walls up defensively. He needs more time to work on pick-and-roll situations with Burton.

Aiden Sherrell

Stats: 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting, including 2-for-5 on 3-pointers and 2-for-4 from the free-throw line. Sherrell had six rebounds, three blocked shots, one turnover and one steal in 25 minutes.

Sherrell is comfortable playing inside and outside and should help solve some of IU’s big man issues from a season ago. He has great length, moves very well for his size and can make 3-pointers. It’s easy to see why he was a priority for the IU staff in the portal.

Vaughn Karvala

Stats: Six points on 3-for-8 shooting, including 0-for-3 on 3-pointers and 0-for-1 from the free-throw line. Karvala had two rebounds, a turnover, a steal and a blocked shot in 15 minutes.

Like Manhertz, he’ll need to get stronger in the upper and lower body to compete with the physicality that awaits in the Big Ten. He’s an above-average athlete who can get off the floor quickly. Karvala will need time to develop.

Ben Winker

Stats: Five points on 1-for-1 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Winker had three rebounds and one assist in seven minutes.

Winker, a walk-on, should be a fan favorite off the bench in late-game situations. He had a nose for the ball on Wednesday and hustled, diving for multiple loose balls. He had a few offensive rebounds and got to the free-throw line twice. He’ll likely play some minutes in Peru.
