Michigan’s Dusty May leaving Ann Arbor to coach Dallas Mavericks

Michigan basketball coach Dusty May is leaving the Big Ten after just two seasons.

The 49-year-old coach, who led the Wolverines to the 2026 national championship, is leaving Ann Arbor to become the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Shams Charania and Adam Schefter reported the news Monday morning.

An Indiana native, May was an IU basketball manager under Bob Knight and graduated from Bloomington in 2000.

May spent two seasons at Michigan, guiding the program to a 64-13 overall record and a 33-7 conference mark.

His surprising exit after just two seasons leaves Michigan with a coaching vacancy in late June. The Wolverines are currently No. 6 in Bart Torvik’s projections for the 2026-27 season.

Before Michigan, May led Florida Atlantic to the 2023 Final Four.
