Quick thoughts on an 86-72 loss at Michigan:

How it happened

Indiana faced its toughest test of the season on Tuesday night in Ann Arbor. Michigan, No. 3 in the Associated Press top 25 poll, took it to the Hoosiers early on. The Wolverines opened up a 22-5 lead as IU couldn’t buy a perimeter shot. As the half wore on, however, Michigan kept turning the ball over, keeping the door open for the Hoosiers. IU took advantage and knocked in four 3-pointers over the final 9:40 of the half to trail 40-29 at the break. Overall, the Hoosiers struggled offensively in the opening 20 minutes. IU shot just 9-for-27 from the field and scored a paltry .87 points per possession. And poor play continued for Tucker DeVries, who went scoreless in 12 first-half minutes. Lamar Wilkerson and Conor Enright each scored six points to pace the Hoosiers at the break.

Out of halftime, Michigan quickly pulled away from the Hoosiers. By the under-12 media timeout, the Wolverine lead had ballooned to 63-40. Michigan was 8-for-12 from the field, including a 3-for-6 mark on 3s and a 4-for-4 mark from the free-throw line with 23 points over the first 7:36 of the second half. Michigan went on a four-minute drought without a field goal, leading into the under-eight timeout and the Hoosiers trailed 70-51 after a DeVries 3-pointer, his first bucket of the game. Indiana got within 12 on a Nick Dorn 3-pointer with under a minute to play, but that’s as close as the Hoosiers would get in their fourth straight loss.

Standout performers

DeVries finished with 15 points, all in the second half and was 4-for-7 on 3s for the game. Dorn added 14 points.

Statistics that stand out

Michigan scored 32 points in the paint, rebounded 38 percent of its misses and had a free-throw rate (FTA/FGA) of 62 percent. Michigan held IU to just 40.4 percent shooting.

Up next for IU

The Hoosiers travel to Piscataway, New Jersey, on Friday to take on Rutgers at Jersey Mike’s Arena. The Scarlet Knights are playing at Iowa tonight. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on FS1.
