Quick thoughts on an 81-76 loss at Purdue:
How it happened
A 12.5-point underdog at tipoff, Indiana was the aggressor in the first half against Purdue at Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers led 11-6 early on a Trey Kaufman-Renn second-chance layup, but the Hoosiers grabbed a 21-20 advantage on a Luke Goode 3-pointer with 10:21 to play in the first half. IU held that lead for the rest of the half, leading by seven on three occasions before settling for a four-point advantage at the break. Goode (13 points) and Mackenzie Mgbako (11 points) were terrific, as was Oumar Ballo, who had nine in the first half. Out of the timeout, a pair of Gicarri Harris free throws reclaimed the lead for the Boilermakers at 69-67. Mgbako’s 3-pointer gave IU a 70-69 advantage, but a Fletcher Loyer 3-point play pushed Purdue ahead 72-70 with 2:34 left. On IU’s next possession, Mgbako was fouled on a drive and hit two free throws to tie the game at 72.

Kaufman-Renn gave Purdue the lead at 77-76 with 11 seconds left on a jumper in the lane and on IU’s ensuing possession, Myles Rice drove the floor and missed a shot where there was some contact but no foul called. IU had to foul Purdue after the rebound and Loyer made both free throws. IU’s length of the court pass resulted in a turnover on its final possession out of a timeout with 3.3 seconds left. The Hoosiers fouled Kaufman-Renn, who sunk a pair of free throws to seal the 81-76 victory.
