Notes and quotes from Luke Goode’s appearance on the Players Perspective podcast
Indiana senior Luke Goode was this year’s guest on the Hoosiers Connect Players Perspective podcast with Miller Kopp.
Here’s a brief recap of some of the notable things Goode had to say. You can listen to the full episode here.
• Goode on potentially getting a fifth year of eligibility: “Hopefully I can get another year (of eligibility) because I broke my foot my sophomore year and only played 10 games.”
• On what IU basketball meant growing up in the state: “Growing up as an Indiana basketball player, I’m sure Anthony (Leal) said this before, and Trey (Galloway), guys that have played high school basketball in the state at a high level, kind of your goal is to get to IU or Purdue. I would definitely say that. So it was a pretty cool opportunity when I was in the portal, when IU reached out. It was one of those things. It was like, ‘you know what, I see a hole in the team. You know, they need a shooter, a knockdown shooter. They’ve got playmakers and the big guys, it makes sense.’
“And, you know, being able to come back to a place that I grew up going to, countless pictures in my phone of me at IU games and me in Indiana gear and all this different stuff. So, having the opportunity is pretty cool.
“You know, throughout the years at Illinois, everybody always asks me, what’s the toughest place to play? Where’s your favorite place to play on the road? And my top three stays the same. It’s IU, Purdue, and Rutgers, those three. So, the RAC is crazy. That’s number three. And then IU-Purdue is one and two, it’s very close. I mean, Indiana is a lot bigger, but Mackey, I mean, I feel like they’re on top of you when they’re cheering. So it’s a crazy feeling. So, being able to play in front of the fans and they cheer for you instead of cheer against you when air ball a shot five feet short. It’s gonna be nice. It’s gonna be nice. So looking forward to it for sure.”
• On how Oumar Ballo and Malik Reneau may open things up on the perimeter: “It’s gonna be nice being with Ballo this year, because I played with Kofi (Cockburn) my freshman year. Obviously, I didn’t get as much time my freshman year, but being with Ballo and Malik (Reneau), guys that are that dominant in the post, it’s gonna be, it’s gonna be very nice.”
• Goode said that crashing the offensive boards is something “they’re moving towards this year at IU.”
“There’s so much value in it. One of the cons against it is defensive transition. But those guys can’t get out in transition if you’ve got the ball or if you are crashing the glass because they’ve got to box out in the paint. It just takes a little more effort and that’s just winning basketball at the end of the day. I’ve been fortunate enough to win all three years, been to the tournament all three years, played in tournament games, won two Big Ten championships, Elite Eight. I’ve been on teams that were really good and all those teams offensive rebound. It’s crazy. We were, to think, top ten in the country my freshman year and last year in offensive rebounding. It’s just extra possessions, extra buckets, easy buckets. You get it under the rim, most of these rebounds, you just put it back up. It just adds to that winning culture.”
