Trey Galloway confident he’ll be fully recovered for his final season at IU
Injuries are nothing new for Indiana fifth-year senior Trey Galloway.
The 22-year-old Culver Academies product has dealt with them throughout his college career. The latest injury Galloway must overcome forced him to miss Indiana’s games in last March’s Big Ten tournament.
The Hoosiers were able to narrowly get past Penn State in the conference tournament without Galloway, but were blown out by Nebraska in their second game at the Target Center.
Last spring, Galloway underwent knee surgery with the hope of being 100 percent healthy by the start of the 2024-25 season.
“I’ve dealt with it a lot,” Galloway said Monday on the Hoosiers Connect Podcast. “I’ve already missed a summer before with my groin. I’ve had, definitely, some tough blows. My wrist and stuff, too. And now this, obviously. It’s really challenging just because you want to be out there with your teammates.”
As a result of the surgery, Galloway wasn’t able to be out there with his teammates for Indiana’s eight-week summer program in Bloomington.
The off-season program wrapped up in late July and the fall semester begins in Bloomington on August 26. Just a month later, practice will begin with the start of the regular season in November.
While missing the offseason program with his teammates was not ideal for Galloway, there was a silver lining. The odds look favorable for Galloway to avoid missing time next season.
“I’m lucky it’s now and I’m not missing games but it still sucks to miss time whenever it is,” Galloway explained on the podcast. “I think just, in general, knowing that I have a chance to be fully back to myself, that’s very positive and that makes me happy. And I think just knowing that I’m going to be able to keep pushing through it and see myself in a couple of months and look back and say ‘wow, that wasn’t that bad.’”
Galloway is a crucial player for the Hoosiers as they look to return to the NCAA tournament for the third time in four seasons under Mike Woodson.
The 6-foot-5, 205-pound guard averaged 10.6 points, 4.6 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 33.3 minutes last season. Galloway had two games with 20 or more points, including 25 in a 76-73 win at Ohio State on February 6 and 28 points against Kansas in a narrow 75-71 loss on December 16.
Indiana revamped its backcourt in the offseason following the graduation of Xavier Johnson and CJ Gunn’s departure via the transfer portal.
The Hoosiers signed an All-Pac 12 guard, Myles Rice, from Washington State, along with Kanaan Carlyle, one of the top freshmen in the Pac 12 last season at Stanford.
Despite those additions, Galloway is still expected to be pivotal in the Indiana rotation. He has the most experience in an IU uniform of any player on the roster and is a bonafide fan favorite.
Galloway told Hoosiers Connect podcast host Miller Kopp that he wants to solidify his legacy in an IU uniform by going “off on a high note and being remembered as a winner.”
But there are rehab steps to complete before that happens and Galloway knows it’s a process to return to full health.
“It’s a long journey. There’s days it’s tough,” Galloway said. “It’s feeling really good. I 100 percent believe I’m going to be back to my normal self if I just keep doing the right things. I’m just excited to get back to my normal self because it makes you realize how blessed we really are to be able to be healthy and to be doing the things we get to do. It’s not easy. There’s a lot of injuries in basketball that happen. So you just gotta be aware of that and know that you can’t take it for granted.”
