Class of 2024 IU signee Liam McNeeley named to Naismith Trophy player of the year midseason team

Class of 2024 Montverde Academy (Fla.) wing and IU signee Liam McNeeley is in the running for the Naismith Trophy’s high school player of the year award for the 2023-24 season.

The Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy national player of the year midseason team was named last week and McNeeley was on the 25-player midseason team.

Three of his Montverde Academy teammates – Cooper Flagg, Asa Newell and Derik Queen – also made the midseason team.

The 6-foot-7 senior, ranked No. 16 in the latest 247Composte rankings for the 2024 class, is having a terrific season for the unbeaten Eagles.

McNeeley is averaging 13.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and .9 steals this season. He’s connected on a team-high 47 3-point attempts and is shooting 52.8 percent from distance. He’s also hitting 70 percent from the free throw line and 53.8 percent on 2s.

Most of McNeeley’s offensive production has come from distance. Of his 154 total field goal attempts, 89 have been 3s (57.7 percent).

Queen, another top Indiana recruit target, is also having an excellent season for Montverde Academy. The 6-foot-9 post player is averaging 16.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. He’s shooting 68.6 percent from the field.
