Los Angeles Lakers select Jalen Hood-Schifino with 17th pick in 2023 NBA draft
The Los Angeles Lakers selected Indiana freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino with the 17th pick in the 2023 NBA draft this evening at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Hood-Schifino became the first Hoosier drafted since 2019 when Romeo Langford went 14th to the Boston Celtics. He is Indiana’s 27th first-round NBA draft pick.
Hood-Schifino is the fourth IU player to go the one-and-done route since 2007 following Eric Gordon, Noah Vonleh and Langford. Gordon was the No. 7 pick in 2007 to the Los Angeles Clippers and Vonleh went No. 9 in 2014 to the Charlotte Hornets.
The Pittsburgh native is IU’s first NBA draft pick under Mike Woodson.
According to the 2023-24 NBA rookie salary scale published by RealGM.com, Hood-Schifino is projected to earn $3,078,800 next season.
Last season’s Big Ten freshman of the year, Hood-Schifino averaged 13.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 33.1 minutes per game for the Hoosiers.
