Indiana guard Rob Phinisee, the program’s backup for Xavier Johnson this past season, has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal.

Phinisee made the announcement via Twitter on Friday morning in a letter to Indiana fans.

“Hoosier nation,” Phinisee wrote. “I’d like to thank you all for your continued support through all the ups and down these past 4 years. Through it all you have stuck with me and supported me to continue my journey.

“After talking with my family, I have decided I will be entering my name in the transfer portal as a grad transfer for the 2022-23 season. I’d like to thank all my former teammates, coaches and managers for developing me and making my time enjoyable at Indiana. #ForeverAHoosier.”

As a grad transfer, Phinisee will be eligible immediately at his next school.

Over four seasons in Bloomington, Phinisee appeared in 111 games and made 69 starts. He averaged 6.5 points, 2.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 24.2 minutes per game.

He’s the fourth player from the 2021-22 roster to announce his departure this offseason, joining Khristian Lander, Michael Durr and Parker Stewart.

Phinisee’s top moments at Indiana came in wins over Butler as a freshman and this past season’s upset over Purdue. As a freshman, Phinisee’s buzzer-beater sank the Bulldogs in the Crossroads Classic. His 20 points against Purdue on Jan. 20, including a game-winning 3-pointer, helped the Hoosiers snap a nine-game losing streak to the Boilermakers.
