Here Hoggard rejects the ball screen from Marble and drives left. Bates is anticipating him using the screen, however, so he comes off in help position on what now becomes the weak side.

Bates starts to freelance a bit on Hoggard’s drive and all of sudden both he and Jordan Geronimo are over-helping together in the lane as Hoggard gets to the left low block. So Hoggard simply passes to Malik Hall in the corner and he knocks down the 3-pointer.

While Bates had some stronger defensive moments in this game, this wasn’t one of them.
