He’s very good at slithering through traffic and then finishing even with some contact at the rim. Great body control and pretty good upper body strength to get the ball on the rim when he’s falling away. The 35% for 3’s was a little surprising; looking at his shot, I was assuming he was a little better than that. But that is a skill he can improve. I think he’ll be a solid rotational player right away, and has a reasonable chance to be a starter early next year.

  • Some of the 35% might be based on volume. He’s taking a lot of shots out of necessity. Number could improve when he’s not carrying such a load offensively.

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

i wonder if he’ll jump up in the rankings at all

  • weitrhino

That’s a good point and it’s underscored by the fact that he scored 33 or the team’s 50 points.

  • SuperNerdLandon

I really think he is the true PG we are looking for. He has shown he has the vision and the attacking ability. As Alex stated, he won’t need to score 33 for us next year. His primary job will be the facilitator. Who is a better PG on our current roster? AD? I think he and DG played PG out of necessity at times. I don’t think they will be asked to do that, but I am not Archie and have no clue what RP will look like come Oct/Nov.

  • coachv

he looks like a score first point rather than a passer. like a smaller version of langford. that doesn’t mean he won’t be. maybe his coach told him to score. he’s smooth, under control, and makes it look easy like langford. probably has another gear. nice hops on the shot block. has gotten thicker. looks strong in that picture. looking forward to watching his development

  • VAHoosier

This is true, but we might also consider that this volume is coming against defenders that are considerably smaller and less athletic than what he’ll face in the B1G. Not saying he won’t be a better shooter than 35%, just wish he were already there. 🙂

  • Oldguyy

On the telecast, they said he was an 85% FT shooter. Music to my ears.

  • David

My takeaway….. 6 made free throws. We need that.

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

assuming we don’t land RL, what’s our starting backcourt next season? rp and dg?

  • Arch Puddington

The breakaway at 2:19 is pretty dang cool. No, Zionsville is not Michigan State, but his ability to find angles and seams will get him some points next year. Not 30+ per game, but even 10-12 plus the ability to initiate the offense and distribute the ball will be very good for the Hoosiers.

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

to me, the latter is more important. this team needs leadership, it needs a floor general. i hope that’s rp, but hard to say. a lot of that is determined by personality or demeanor, that kind of thing. can’t really tell that one way or the other in a highlight reel.

  • Sarasota Hoosier

score first out of necessity, 33 out of 50 points total. I don’t think McCutcheon had much else to play against good competition. Interesting to see him go up against PU point guard of the future.

  • Sarasota Hoosier

Alex, I appreciate your efforts to keep IU fans informed, especially us who live far away. Given the early finish to the Big 10 season, and given that IU still has a very small chance to make the NIT, does the team keep practicing?

  • Arch Puddington

I agree, can’t tell from highlights, but my suspicion from watching a lot of them and reading the comments of those who have seen him play is that he is just that. Whether he is scoring, distributing, or leading the break, he just seems to always be driving the action with his attack. Dribbles a lot, but even if that will have to change, the mindset behind what he does seems pretty clear. Even Yogi wasn’t dominant as a Freshman, but I do expect him to take the reins pretty quickly.

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

that’s exactly what i was thinking. and he’s also a pretty solid shooter, albeit streaky at times.

  • Ivan Renko

that’s what I’m thinking. DG could be great at PG, but he has shown that he would be more effective off the ball and as a scoring threat rather than a primary ball handler and initiator of the offense. If he plays off the ball, i think it would mitigate the “bad devonte” we would see during his off nights.

edit: I’ll add that i can see a scenario where DG and Al start in the backcourt as phinisee gets accustomed to the college game. but i fully expect phinisee to take over primary PG role at some point.

  • Ivan Renko

definitely. I think next year he could conceivably shoot the 3 at a solid 38-40% rate. he also has a knack for hitting that shake-and-bake long jumper around the elbow.

regardless, if we don’t land RL, i think DG will be a starter

  • MrNobody

As a kid who is D1 talent on a high school team how could you expect him not to be score first. Not trying to be sarcastic or mean spirited in any way. This is not an all star team. They don’t have multiple players at that level. Not criticizing you personally but have seen that a few times. I would be more scared if on his high school team he wasn’t THE guy.

  • inCMitrust

At this point we only will have 4 scholarship guards on the roster. Green, Durham, Phinisee and Anderson so they will all see lots of minutes. Romeo would obviously start if he comes, but I still don’t like our chances. Archie is offering juco’s like Devonte Bandoo and I’m sure there my be more so I expect at least one more guard on the team next year. Bandoo is a shooting guard. I think Phinisee looks like the starter at point guard from day one with Al backing him up.

  • N71

Devonte Bandoo…had no idea, how’d you know that? Watched a couple videos and nothing really stood out other than he looks to be hardwired as a scorer, like Devonte (Green). Phinisee’s workload may be similar to Yogi’s when he first arrived, trial by fire with freshman turnovers being his kryptonite.

  • inCMitrust

I saw it on a Twitter feed and then looked him up. Sure enough it showed that we had offered a scholarship. He definitely is not a dead eye deep shooter which I think we need. I’ve said it before you can’t only have four guards on the roster which is why I’m sure Archie is not done with the class for next year.
