At the buzzer: Indiana 80, Notre Dame 77

INDIANAPOLIS – Quick thoughts on an 80-77 overtime win over Notre Dame:

How it happened: It appeared Indiana was going to let another opportunity against a marquee opponent slip away. But after trailing by 14 in the first half and then by eight with just over two minutes to play, Indiana found a way. It was a team effort in the comeback in the final minutes of regulation and Indiana needed a pair of missed free throws by Austin Torres with less than a second left to force overtime. In overtime, Juwan Morgan took over down the stretch and a rebound and pass to Morgan by Zach McRoberts off a missed free throw led to the go ahead basket with eight seconds to go. Notre Dame had a chance on the subsequent possession, but Matt Ferrell’s 3-pointer came up short and Green secured the ball and was fouled. He knocked down a pair of free throws to push the lead to three and then a Bonzie Colson heave from midcourt just missed as time expired.

Standout performer: After going scoreless in last Saturday’s loss at Louisville, Robert Johnson bounced back in a major way on Saturday. The senior guard scored 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. Juwan Morgan, though, came up the biggest for Indiana. The junior forward finished with 34 points and 11 rebounds in 40 minutes, including eight in overtime.

Statistic that stand out: In a stunning finish, Indiana scored the game’s final six points over a span of 11 seconds, which included a pair of Morgan baskets and two Devonte Green free throws to push the lead to three.

  • Thanks, and same to you and yours!

I agree and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

  • Hoosier PD

I just kept saying to Devonte hit your free throws and don’t let them win on some wild azz 3 point shot. Bonzi almost hit that 3, man, that rimmed in and out…

  • I’m just glad we can complain about the officiating after a win this time. Good teams find ways to overcome the refs, and this team just turned that corner.

  • Yeah, he scored 20 points, hounded his guy on defense for 43 minutes, but let’s pick on something, right? I mean, can’t just give the kid props for a great game, let’s find something to complain about.

  • Mark Bando

Yes, i agree. But also, one of the beauties of the game is that even with the poor shooting in the first half, we were only down by 6 cuz we held them to 31.

  • Mark Bando

He was amazing. So many great hustle plays

  • Absolutely. At one point in the first half, I was commenting in the premium forum that’s it’s amazing how well we were defending and executing on offense, just couldn’t find the basket. Good things happen when you play hard and execute the plan, even if the shooting is off.

  • Vernon Aldrich

    Exactly.

  • Mark Bando

I was thinking of that same thing

  • Vernon Aldrich

There’s no trolling here. I love Rob Johnson, but you and Ole Man – and anyone else claiming otherwise – are in denial if you can’t admit Rob has always had a turnover issue.

  • cbags05

Does there seriously have to be a naysayer to everything?

  • Mark Bando

Yep. I think you are correct.

  • Mark Bando

Yes, great game and also had the block on ferrel at the end of regulation

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

What a great win!!!! Colts, Bears??

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

You are great!!! What a win!!!

  • Ole Man

Had six boards and played great D which offset those TOs.
Also led the team with 43 minutes played out of a possible 45.
If you’re not trolling then you’re being unnecessarily negative!

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

Merry Christmas to all of you!! This win certainly helps. Vicbert we need your post!!!!

    Gus’s voice crack? Explain, please?

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

    Dilly dilly!!

  • Mark Bando

Except for the very end, DD seemed to sit for most of the last 15 minutes. Did archie want to stay with the other guys or was he sending a message DD?

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

    Great point.

  • Mark Bando

    They sure do

  • Ms hoosier

Lol. Got a little too happy?

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

    Alex, you gotta be ecstatic!!!

  • sarge

I love wings, I love steaks, I love wing steaks!

  • HoosierOne

Huge win!!! So proud of them for this one. Morgan is a beast this season. McRoberts was huge on the glass and at the end of the game.

  • sarge

Glad to see him play like we knew he would. That half court shot gave him the confidence back!

  • HoosierOne

    Defense wins championships!

  • Ole Man

Just my opinion — not a message, but had a lineup that was working.
He was in for most of the OT if I recall.

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

    Are we sorry conditing

  • sarge

I have a feeling he had to rewrite this article, several times. What a game!

  • sarge

And they went right to him when he came back to the floor.

  • HoosierOne

He does everything you can ask him to do except score. Tonight he played huge and had a lot of key plays to help the win. Proud of him today. Wish he would take the open shots when he gets them though.

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

    Bingo!!!

  • Ole Man

    Listen to Coach’s presser.
(Paraphrasing) Glad we won. Back to work. Game Monday. Room for improvement.
    LOL!
    Love this guy.

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

I certainly was wrong about having Alford as the next coach. Archie Miller is a dream come true for us/IU.

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

    Vicbert must be Christmas shopping.

ZMAC deserves Jones scholarship for spring semester

  • inCMitrust

I know you should just enjoy the moment and the win, but with the upcoming schedule we could really build some momentum. At this point we are only a game behind in the win column where I thought we would be. Win out on the non conference games, split first 2 big10 games and I like the chances to finish in the top half of the big.

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

Please, no injuries in the next 3 games.

  • KingofKentucky

Please tell me you’re going to take the car out and ghost ride the whip!

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

    Lol!!! You a poodle, Nope!!

  • TomJameson

Phinisee probably isn’t coming off the bench, but I like your idea of it being a kick-butt team.

  • Lance76

Yes they both play with heart. Anyone that has a negative comment of McRoberts deserving playing time need to take note of his play.

  • Dr Dave

I remember Archie commenting that he liked how JM and CH play together, so agreeing with Ole Man that lineup was about going with what is working. CH providing the spacing that let JM go off inside against an opponent that didn’t have size to hurt us, even without DD.

  • TomJameson

I for one, did not laugh. McFloor (because he dives after loose balls), is one hustle player 100% of the time. Very good BB IQ as well, or at least, he “happens” to be in the right place at the right time.

  • Pianoroark

Crazy game. Emotional roller coaster. The defense is so refreshing. JM is something else. Happy for RJ that he worked through his offensive funk today. And what can you say about ZM? Guy is crucial. I would never have guessed as much before the season started. Call me converted.

Now let’s avoid a letdown before B1G play and keep this ball rollin!
