Five-star point guard Darius Garland sets announcement date

Update: Darius Garland has changed his announcement to Monday at 2:45 p.m. CT, according to Evan Daniels. His father, Winston, confirmed those plans to Inside the Hall in a text message.

Class of 2018 Brentwood Academy (Tenn.) point guard Darius Garland has a date set to announce his college decision.

As first reported by Evan Daniels of Scout/247Sports, Garland will make an announcement on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m. CT at his high school.

The scheduled announcement time for Garland comes at the same time as the tip-off for Indiana’s road game against Seton Hall in the Gavitt Games.

Garland, the No. 10 player nationally according to the 247Composite, took official visits to Vanderbilt, Indiana, Kentucky and UCLA.

Originally from Gary, Indiana, Garland moved to Nashville as a seventh grader. His father, Winston, played at Gary Roosevelt, Missouri State and in the NBA for five different teams.

Garland was one of two five-star recruits to visit Bloomington for Hoosier Hysteria. The other was Romeo Langford, who is expected to trim his list to three schools on Saturday morning.

Garland is expected to sign his National Letter of Intent in the early signing period.

Indiana’s current four-man recruiting 2018 class is ranked No. 12 nationally by 247Sports.

    here’s hoping it’s IU….

  • Jethro Jones

same time as Indiana tip off? is that bad news or good news for hoosiers?

  • HoosierStuckInKY

Doesn’t look good… Announcing at his high school instead of neutral location, same time IU plays….just my opinion but I think he stays home.

Either way, best of luck to you Darius!

  • disqus_pEAm3DQleb

Good news, IMO. I’m sure they’ll discuss it during the game in that case… And it’s nationally televised.

  • Lance76

Darius will be successful where ever he goes. I think he has seen the Hoosiers love and it might be hard to top that in the basketball world. The exposure he would get at IU would far surpass other options. This is an interesting recruitment. To me,the picture above tells a story.

Yes, the 15th is the final day to sign NLI. “A coach or institutional representative may not hand deliver the NLI off campus or be present off campus at the time of signing. The NLI may be delivered by express mail, regular mail, email, fax, mobile applications or any other electronic means.”

Don’t most kids announce at their high school? Why would that matter?

  • marcusgresham

I don’t see the concerns here. It’s pretty common for kids to announce at their high schools. If anything I’d take that as a good sign, because he lives in Nashville so going to a neutral site would seem to me to an opportunity to the crowd up to a pro-Vandy audience, whereas the high school setting would provide him the chance to insulate himself from that same group, should his decision be to go elsewhere.
I also wouldn’t worry about the timing–these guys usually contact the coaches before making the decision public.
A third thing—Dude, you gotta get out of Kentucky!

  • Kyl470

You can look at this two ways. I’ve read also that he will actually say his decision at 5:45 PM which would have a great cut in during the under 12 minute TV timeout on national TV when all IU fans are watching to say he is going to be a Hoosier.

You can also spin it that he is announcing when all IU fans will be watching a game so he won’t have as many people focused on him choosing Vandy since we will all be watching the game.

Again it’s all how you spin it.

  • Eric Normington

Can he and Langford both go to IU? Aren’t they both point guards?

  • VOXAC30

Romeo Langford is a shooting guard and a small forward depending how you define a forward. Even still I don’t think there would be a conflict.

  • Eric Normington

Oh I didn’t realize that, I thought Langford was a tall PG. Thanks

  • Jethro Jones

maybe even cut in to it before the game?

  • Jay Skibbe

of course he announces at his High School, neutral location ?

  • Jay Skibbe

get out of the pUKe, lol

  • sd chuck

Would like to add him to the recruiting class, but he will be a star where ever he decides to go. Seems like a good kid and a good family. Hope he chooses IU, but if not good luck!

  • Jay Skibbe

Miller will know ahead of time, don’t think that means anything, probably a good thing maybe because it is when the Hoosiers are playing, news during the game, for Hoosier fans, ?

  • Jethro Jones

It’s weird that it was first reported he would decide friday or monday. Both days vandy has games. now Wed…IU game day. What does this all mean, Darius?!?!

  • Indiana_Banners

Or, option 3, the decision of when to announce wasn’t based at all on when IU was playing and is instead related to a convenient announcing time for the host(his HS), his friends that want to attend, his family’s availability, or another factor which could be anything. Maybe other HS athletes from that program are announcing before or after Darius, I know all athletes that received scholarships at my HS announced in a joint conference… way more possibilities than those two…

  • Jethro Jones

OK looking at past Brentwood Academy signing days, they are mostly joint conferences with multiple athletes. I don’t think the timing has anything to do with his decision. The timing was Brentwood’s decision.

  • RonMlarkey

It seems his relationship with coach Drew is extremely strong and goes back far longer than Archie’s last minute attempt (through no fault of his own) unfortunately. If Crean is still coach neither Garland or Romeo is even considering us at this point, good to see the Hoosiers making the top 2 and 3 options of top 10 recruits in such a short time. We are sure to start landing them in future seasons but I get the feeling Darius will be staying home with other 5 star Shittu and then try and recruit Romeo to join the class.

I won’t even guess what this all means, or what they knew about our schedule when they picked that time. But they must have something in mind for that time, because the simpler and more common way to do it would be to sign right after school. He’s already there, as would be his coaches and teammates. One simple possibility is that he picked 5:45 so that family and friends who work 9-5 jobs can be there.

They’ve been very thorough, but it would be pretty surprising to me if our game has anything to do with his timing. I hope I’m wrong, but because if it DOES have something to do with our game, I suspect that would mean he is picking IU. But we have come “this close” with so many recruits in recent years that I am just resigned to both Darius and Romeo going elsewhere.

  • Indiana_Banners

Not necessarily. Even if he had other times available that doesn’t mean he checked IU’s schedule before making his selection. It MIGHT be a good sign if his announcement time was chosen with IU’s scheduled game in mind but that really doesn’t seem like a very likely scenario to me.

  • Koko

My hope is he moved it up to Monday so it won’t take IU fans attention off of the game. Plus it will give us all two days to bask in the victory of his coming to IU.
It is all good…..where will you be at 3:45 pm on Monday?

  • IUBizmark

I wanted Garland more than any other player, but I don’t think he’s coming here. He’s going to be the hometown here at Vandy. I can’t blame him for that and I think IU fans can see that logic.

  • Ivan Renko

unfortunate, yes. tragedy? not so much (I’m sure you’re being a little facetious haha) But in all seriousness, I would rather get Romeo to wrap up this recruiting class and not sweat it out over who will have to make a tough decision next year scholarship-wise (I say that because I don’t think any of our players will be NBA-ready after this season…)

  • Ivan Renko

not sure if you’ve seen yet, but the timing was changed from Wednesday evening to Monday afternoon

  • Jethro Jones

Glad we only have to wait until Monday now!

  • Hoosierkamp

so easy to overthink these things….. but….. Maybe just realized it was during IU game, and now changed it? I hope so! Come on Darius!!! Be a Hoosiers. But, if he chooses to stay home, can’t blame him. We want the same from our New Albany buddy 🙂

  • Jethro Jones

Good. Don’t do it on a game day. Bad idea. Vandy plays Monday so IU is the clear choice.

  • Jethro Jones

looking back at Dayton commits during the season. A majority committed two days before a game.

  • MCPeePants

Not to be a downer, but it’s not looking good for IU here. Moving the announcement time has more to do with scheduling on Brentwood Academy’s end than an IU game conflict. To me, the much more significant factor suggesting he’s going to Vandy is Simi Shittu canceling his UNC visit within days of Darius making his decision. Looks strongly like they both want to play together in Nashville. I hope I’m wrong, but I think we lost him.

  • MCPeePants

    247 vehemently disagrees

  • Don Daiker

Where can I watch IU play tonight? None of the bars here in Oxford, OH get BTN2Go. I even subscribed, but my TV provider does not provide it. Help.

  • It’s on BTN+.

  • Don Daiker

Thanks, Mark. But neither my TV nor the area bars get BTN+. I may be able to get it on my computer screen, but I’d much rather watch the game at a bar–perhaps in Richmond or Connorsville.

  • Koko

    Watch it on your tablet.

  • Fifer39

You are truly a modern day bard.

  • Fifer39

    That’s some impressive research!

  • Fifer39

    When does Shittu announce?

  • Larry Brown

Devonte is looking like a future All-American. No biggie if we lose Darius

  • TIKO

I was at HH and sat across from DG watched him all night. He was not into it at all and looked bored to tears. At one point he purposely covered his yawn with his hand. Spent most of his time looking down at his phone and no he was not posting moments of the night. The picture of him smiling is not representative of the night.
My opinion based on what I saw and I hope I am wrong but no way does he choose IU.

  • yimyames

That’s the same with every recruit at every HH. It’s exciting in the beginning then it’s just part of the visit. His Dad got chills and his mom was brought to tears when they walked him across the court. Not sure the rest of the night really matters, it was a practice.

  • vicbert caladipo

Was just looking at 247 recruiting. They have DG going to either IU, UK, UCLA or Vandy. The prediction is Vandy with a 69% chance. IU a 12% chance and Duke 19% chance. Found that strange considering Duke is not in his top 4. Guess when predicting….NEVER…leave Duke out. Heck they got four 5 stars this year and is the only school not named UK to consistently land 5 stars every year.

RL is another story as 247 says his final choices are IU, KU, UNC, UCLA and Vandy with IU predicted having an 80% chance of landing him with KU a distant 6%. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was pessimistic…..but I don’t know Archie very well. He may have the salesmenship to wrestle a 5 star away from the usual suspects. Both would be utopia. One would be great. But first things first……there is this year……………………….

  • TIKO

I hope you are right but I watched him and Romeo very closely the entire night. Romeo was more engaged. Afterward my son and I walked around and got within 3 feet of Romeo, Darius G and Archie. Romeo was posing for pictures and like I said showed more interest. Hope you are right and I am wrong but I will be utterly shocked based on what I saw if Darius picks IU. Parents have a big sway in an 18 yr old kids life but parents usually let 18 yr olds make their choice unless its really going to hurt them. At least that is how I am with my 18 yr old son who was with me at HH. Loved Archie’s phone though, thing was huge. He looks very young in person. When we all started our first chant it was for Romeo and Darius’s buddies/family (one of which you can see behind him in the above picture) were all over Darius laughing and teasing him. Darius laughed as well. Apparently Darius thought he would be chanted first. Unfortunately the crowd only chanted Darius on two occasions that I recall and not nearly as loud as for Romeo. Romeo should definitely have felt the love.
Well, hope I am wrong Darius would be a huge get.

  • TomEke

There are 2 point guards ranked ahead of Darius Garland on 247 Sports — Tre Jones who committed to Duke and Immanuel Quickley who committed to Kentucky. You have to think Jones to Duke reduces the chances of Garland wanting to go there because a team only has so many minutes to go around.

That being said, IU has Robert Phinisee coming to town that year. Robert isn’t ranked as highly, but he still plays Garland’s same position.

Devonte Green, who I consider a solid point guard, will also be a junior that year. If you’re Darius Garland, maybe you see DG as competition for a spot on the court in your first, and possibly only year, with the program. If you’re Phinisee, maybe you see DG as someone you can both learn from and compete with in practice in your first 2 years with the program.

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

Inside The Hall fans, enjoy the game tonight. Regular season starts therefore no more nerve-racking lack of respect predictions for IU basketball. What a long off season this year and now let the real games begin. Go IU!!!!!?????

  • Tenacious Newt

Simmer down! The kid moved to Nashville in middle school and it is more jumpin than Bloomington. And as far as everyone with the half-***** poetry, it’s creepier than the Slick Rick shuffle.

  • BeatDuke

Just checked the score. IU down 18 at half? For those watching, what is going on? Particularly with the defenses?????
