Indiana junior guard James Blackmon Jr. has confirmed Jon Rothstein’s report from Sunday that he will sign with an agent and remain in the NBA draft.

Blackmon Jr. made the announcement in an Instagram post:

I would like to thank my family for being there through all of the ups and the downs. I would like to thank my teammates, who have became brothers to me, for pushing me everyday. I would like to thank the fans and everyone who has supported me throughout my career at Indiana University. I would like to thank God for allowing me to play a game I love. With that being said, after much reflection and discussion with my family, I have decided to remain in the 2017 NBA Draft and sign with an agent. After graduating Indiana in three years, I am thrilled to take the next step in my basketball career and pursue a lifelong dream. The past three years have been an amazing ride. Through blood, sweat, and tears, putting on that Indiana Jersey every game and playing in front of die hard Indiana fans was an honor and privilege. The past three years have brought memories and relationships I will never forget. Bloomington will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you Hoosier Nation! #newbeginnings -JBJ

Good luck JBJ! Scholarships no longer an issue!!!

  • N71

Wild guess on scoring next year:

    Rob 16
    Juwan 12
    DeRon 9
    Collin 9
    Josh 9
    Devonte 7
    Curtis 7

Sprinkle in Freddie, Zack, and a few freshman moments.

  • IdahoHoosier

I think one or more freshmen will contribute more than expected. I also think Jones or Green will make a big jump in production. IU will need it to come from somewhere and one or more younger guys will have to have a mind to score.

  • Rick Pearson

Well I wish you nothing but the best pursue your dream you graduated good luck and thank you for being a Hoosier

  • iugradmark

Quality kid. Worked hard, dealt with injuries, and graduated in 3 years. Great representative of the university and athletic program.

  • IU1972

Best wishes, JBJ! Thanks for the many ‘big shot’ memories!

  • IUBizmark

Curiously absent: No mention of the coaching staff.

  • Mark Bando

hmmmmm……interesting Crean and that staff not mentioned. don’t think that would be an accident.

  • Mark Bando

    RJ – 14, DD – 13, JM – 12, DG – 10, JN – 9, CH – 9, JS – 8

  • iugradmark

It is a bit unusual but perhaps he dealt with that in a more personal way.

  • Zach

Best of luck Jimmy Buckets! Not going to beat a dead horse again but beyond disappointing and frustrating to see people on Twitter getting mad or trying to put down a kid for trying to chase a dream. Thanks for the memories and giving your all to IU. Go prove the doubters wrong!

  • Mark Bando

ok, my starting five is gonna be: RJ and DG at guards. JM and CH at forwards and DD at center.

  • John D Murphy

    That looks like the 5.

  • John D Murphy

    Well said.

  • Mark Bando

Newkirk first off the bench, hopefully CJ takes a good leap and I see Smith becoming a big contributor by mid season

  • John D Murphy

    Cujo 7. DG 7

Otherwise I’m right there with you within a ppg on everyone.

  • iugradmark

I think Josh starts. CH may be in a situation where his minutes are limited. I could see him coming off the bench. I won’t be surprised to see a lot of different lineups especially early on. DD and JM should be the constants. I am looking forward to the team and certain players getting better as the season progresses.

  • Mark Bando

next to DD, the guy i think we could see the most growth from is DG

  • Mark Bando

yep, i think you are right on target

  • John D Murphy

Goodluck James. All I can say is next guy to wear #1 has a couple tough shooting acts to follow.

  • I admit to holding out a tiny sliver of a hope that the report yesterday would turn out to be incorrect. Okay, now, officially: best of luck to JBJ. And here’s to hoping RJ decides to return (and he certainly should, without even the tiniest sliver of a doubt) and our 2017-18 roster will be established.

  • Maybe just reserve #1 for Romeo.

  • John D Murphy

Alex. The scholarship board is already updated. Quick work sir. Now we are all looking your way Mr. Johnson.

  • John D Murphy

Also, for anyone who didn’t know, Cody just earned his degree and graduated last weekend. Congrats to the big fella.

  • iugradmark

I have been nervous about Johnson returning for a while. Would really like to see him return and play for Archie. Unlike the others that have left, I really believe he can improve his situation by returning.

  • GHG

Clifton Moore, Smith and Durham will be getting minutes too.

  • MPmike B

Did I miss something? I have not heard confirmation that Rob Johnson will be back yet?

  • curtis south

Sorry I feel this way but I am not shaken by losing him.
Great scorer, SO SO weak on defense! Best of luck to you James!

  • IdahoHoosier

Not a ton of size, so I agree starting lineups will be small and fluid. I imagine JN, RJ, CH, JM, DD as the starting 5. But if DG or CJ or even one of the freshmen kick butt in practice that week, they could slide into the top 5. Should be a dogfight weekly to earn starting spots. Can’t wait!

  • Hardwood83

Sure, you’re right but looking at next years team those points will be missed.

There is no obvious “go to’ guy that can get his own shot consistenly. Will need to play unselfish, team ball on offense and tough D to win….novel concepts!

  • HoosierDom

I think that’s it too, but there is not a lot of scoring there. To me that is a roster full of terrific glue players. I am very uncertain about this year.

  • Mark Bando

Yes, a lot of uncertainty losing our three best players. But I still feel good about the season. Still plenty of talent. Probably more than Archie has ever had.

  • Mark Bando

Sorry but I disagree. Freshman year, yes, very bad on defense. But I saw improvement last year and he would have improved again this year

  • Larry Brown

I will be very surprised if JM scores at that level. Right now he does not create his shot very well. And his three-point shooting was not good this season. I’m not trying to be negative but just objective here, I think this team will be offensively-challenged. There isn’t one frontcourt player who is really a scorer. They all have different talents but not scoring. But hopefully the defense will be so improved that it will make up for that

  • SCHoosier

thank you for your three years James….great good bye message.

  • HoosierDom

Yeah, that is certainly a fair way to look at it. But, it will also unquestionably the most talent he has ever played against, so who can say how it pans out. A bad first year could certainly start a downward spiral. Hopefully some scorers emerge.

  • PBzeer

I think that’s in large part because we had scoring from others. I expect both CH and JM to average double figures this season.

  • Piker

I agree JN starts. He seemed to improve in all aspects of the game as the year went along. Went back and read That’s a wrap and if he can reduce TOS I think he starts at PG. RJ seemed to struggle with his handle last year.

  • HoosierDom

Man, if CH is our 2nd leading scorer I think we are in for a long year. I could see JM having a big year, but I haven’t seen that kind of offensive skill from Hartman. Hopefully RJ comes back, DD is the leading scorer and JM is Denzel Washington lite.

  • VAHoosier

Really? Keep in mind that Juwan was not healthy for the middle part of the season last year. Crean mentioned several times that Juwan was just getting healthy toward the end of the year. He averaged 11ppg over the last 5 games of the season, and that was on a team with better scoring options than we will have next year. I certainly think Juwan has it in him to average 12ppg next year.

  • N71

I’m expecting Smith to be pretty good and go somewhat the path of OG and Juwan. Moore is the wild card I believe, he’s pretty unique so he could suck or be amazing or anything in-between. Would prefer he be on the amazing side though. If he’s effective and teams don’t have an answer for him I could see him at 7 to 10 points a game.

  • Ole Man

    True on the talent.
Let’s not forget, however, that talent plays in the Big Ten.
Fans seem to be overlooking that and the obligatory adjustment period.

  • Jeremy

Is it still possible to add to our 2017 recruits ? I am hoping someone leaves and we can add a scorer. I am not to confident in the current unit.

  • CWheels

What “scorers” are available that makes you hope for someone to leave?

  • adam

the way newkirk finished the year i think he could lead the team with 15.4 ppg

    i added the .4 on a whim

  • Koko

Just because DG and Cujo didn’t fit that bill last season doesn’t mean they are not able to score….what will Arch do with those two?….will be fun to see how it pans out. And don’t rule out a lot of scoring down low from DD, JM, CH and Justin Smith. Let’s see how it all pans out in the non-conference games. We have enough guys who played in the B1G last season….I don’t think this team will be overwhelmed playing in the B1G.

  • Koko

Yes Moore is a wild card…..he could come in and pop three’s from the corners opening up the inside. I’m getting more excited as the days go by….can’t wait to see Arch’s first IU team play, grow and progress.

  • N71

You bring up a point that’s hard to account for. If for example Archie’s system relies on and therefore features players like Devonte (strong defender, great passer), Devonte could be on the court a ton and therefore end up scoring 12-15 a game.

  • David Macer

That’s only 69 points. Our D better be excellent, otherwise it’s gonna be a long season.

  • N71

I do think we’ll score less but our defense, in theory, should be much better. As for the shortfall in points, Freddie and the others should be worth another 10-15 between them.
