At the Buzzer: Indiana 95, Iowa 73

  • 03/09/2017 8:29 pm in

WASHINGTON – Quick thoughts on Indiana’s 95-73 win over Iowa:

How it happened: Iowa kept things close for a half. And then Indiana ran the Hawkeyes out of the Verizon Center. After a Jordan Bohannon free throw drew Iowa to within three at 55-52 with 14:38 to play, the barrage began. De’Ron Davis layup. James Blackmon Jr. 3-pointer. Devonte Green jumper. Another Blackmon Jr. 3-pointer. Thomas Bryant dunk. The 12-0 spurt gave Indiana a comfortable 67-52 lead. After Fran McCaffery was called for a technical with 5:02 to play and Blackmon Jr. hit a pair of free throws, Indiana’s lead was 27. The Hoosiers finished with 1.25 points per possession with an effective field goal percentage of 70.7. Indiana has now won three of four and Thursday’s victory sets up a Friday quarterfinal matchup with Wisconsin.

Standout performer: Blackmon Jr. finished with a team-high 23 points. He also added eight rebounds, four assists, a steal and just one turnover in 32 minutes.

Statistics that stands out: After being outscored 39 to 16 at the free throw line in Iowa City, Indiana won the free throw battle on Thursday night. The Hoosiers were 13-of-19 from the line and Iowa was just 6-of-10. Indiana also won the points off of turnovers battle, 22-18. In Iowa City, it was a 25-18 advantage for the Hawkeyes.

When they secure a rebound, if they will just take a second to count the other teams players before they try to take off they will cut out a couple more TO’s

  • mharv2631

Wisconsin will try to take away the three, so I hope IU can drive and score or get fouled.

  • We’re talking garbage time here, like the last 2 minutes up by 26 or so. Any team can get a little lackadaisical at that point. And also some bench players were in who hadn’t played yet. TOs really were under control in the second half.

  • Ole Man

Thank you. I knew it was way more than 12. He must be talking tournament games.

  • Lots of driving and scoring in this one. Lots of assists into the post as well. This was a solid game all around — perimeter shooting was great, of course, but it wasn’t the entire story.

  • mharv2631

Hope Morgan plays like this tomorrow.

  • Ole Man

Only a slight disagreement. Think the game was well in control, but some of those TOs were front line players that the team made against the press.

Guys – Chill. It’s one game where we shot an effective field goal percentage of over 70%. We shot damned near as well against OSU and almost lost! Look at the whole season before you evaluate this team or its coach. Learn the difference between lucky (shooting the lights out from everywhere once in a while and/or when the other team can’t hit anything) and good (winning when you don’t shoot well because you also play defense and protect the ball and stay focused and disciplined, none of which this team has shown). The coach still sucks and needs to go.

  • Seriously, kid was awesome. I’m thinking (hoping?) he’s just finally back to 100% and so we’ll see the JM we thought we’d see before the season started.

  • Ole Man

I think 3 of 3. Wisc D will lower our shooting%, so we need to shoot “smart” which I take to be shoot well; not allow that D to force us into TOs; and play good D against Happ and crew.

  • In this game, we shot well and also played great defense and mostly protected the ball (particularly in the dominant second half).

But kudos for coming in with your swipe at CTC after a win, and not just a loss. And I’m serious about that. Kudos.

    You should re-name yourself BUZZ-KILL

  • IULore

Well, I want him to stay, but this game doesn’t affect that feeling. The only reason I would be in favor of a change is Billy D, Brad S or some pie in the sky type guy.

  • Ole Man

And that’s cool. And you may very well get your wish.
This win doesn’t affect my feeling either. Ha!

  • Gregory J. Haggard

    I think it’s the haircut!
    Looked sharp.

  • The Lights Go Down

Play the game tomorrow that they played today and the ref’s will have fouled out Davis, Morgan, and Bryant with 13 minutes left in the second half. Tomorrow, the calls Indiana got today will be going to Wisky, and we’ll look the way Iowa did today.

  • Ole Man

Best combo IU has is TB to Davis. TB has had how many assists to him this season?

  • Ole Man

You could be right. Or the refs could do what they did tonight and let them play.
If they do, Wisc is in trouble!

  • Jeff Crowder

I am 50/50 on CTC. I think dakich made a point of talking him up tonight, even pointing out some in game adjustments. But then again, why cant he get this kind of effort every game. I think he comes back next year….but after that who knows.

  • Jeff Crowder

JBJ has to facilitate tomorrow. Don’t force it. Pound the ball inside to DD and JM. Newkirk and Johnson have to play with swagger. TB HAS to get more than 3 boards. All that and another defensive effort like tonight and we can win.

  • Jeff Crowder

It’s great when we win! And it’s therapy when we don’t

  • AndyCapp

    Me either! Enjoy the W!!!

  • Jeff Crowder

You guys are right….GO BIG RED

  • cbags05

Said it a few times now. This team is capable of winniing the big ten tourney.

  • Jeff Crowder

3 of last 4…played with intent!

  • TomJameson

I think you and Mark both have good points and can actually both be true. There were some turnovers in the last 2-3 minutes of the game that were the results of sloppy play because of a lack of focus. IU had a 29 point lead when those turnovers started happening, along with missing those last-second shots. Ticked me off because I wanted to win by 30+ at that point.

But Mark was right about when in the flow, turnovers were almost non-existent. Of course, the offensive flow for the Hoosiers was because the Refs swallowed their whistles for a bit.

Back to turnovers – Even discounting the 2/3 at the end of the game, there were still too many. Just my opinion.

  • TomJameson

Because the refs let him play!

  • TomJameson

He didn’t have to do it all alone tonight either. The entire team was contributing to this one. That’s why JBJ got 8 assists.

  • Right, I’m speaking mostly relatively here.

  • TomJameson

One more win and they’ll have a #1 seed in the NIT. 🙂

  • TomJameson

DC area has a large IU fan base. Did you hear the “HOO,HOO, HOO, HOOSIERS” chants?

  • TomJameson

You’re right about the officiating. If they let them play IU can get into some kind of rhythm. Their offense needs that.

  • KingofKentucky

It’s unfortunate he hasn’t been healthy but it was great to finally see a team worry about going into the paint. Everyone played better D tonight because the opposition couldn’t simply get into the paint without paying for it.

  • oldiugymnast

One more and they dance – weak bubble + UNC and Kansas

  • oldiugymnast

  • Ole Man

I think they need at least two more, Wisc and Mary to even think about it.

  • Ole Man

    Yeah; they got silly there.

  • pcantidote

That really is one of the untold stories of the game. There were A LOT of plays that have been called fouls on us all year, that really weren’t fouls, and that weren’t called fouls tonight. Finally.

  • pcantidote

We had way more vs. Kent St in elite 8 in 2002 if my memory serves. It must be a B1G tournament record. I would have pegged that record at around 4.

  • calbert40 – AC000000

  • TomJameson

Yeah, I agree with Ole Man, they need at least another two to dance. Those two quality wins were nice, but they were a very long time ago, and the horrible rest-of-the-season is recent news. Lost too many in a row to make it up that quickly.

But IU will probably be a top seed in the NIT 🙂

  • Lang

and capable of losing too. but at least now they are clicking, and hopefully it will be carried to the Dance

  • Koko

    Well done men…..well done… Wisky….Go IU!

  • Jonny McClain

great win. happy to see these kids playing at a high level and beating a team that they knew they were better than. funny how a team can shoot 40 plus free throws and then a few weeks later shoot 10. most disappointing part of my night is watching at Scotty’s on 96th street and they are playing the butler game over the loudspeaker instead of IU… so sad. I knew that I should have went to kilroys.

  • Zach

They hit 18 in a home game against Minnesota in February 2015

  • Pianoroark

If I remember right, the committee isn’t supposed to take into account when the wins took place. However, they do take into account what players were on the court for said wins, which may hurt IU, fair or not (because IU beat Kansas and UNC with OG).

I still have to believe that IU has a better shot than many are forecasting. Some of these bubble teams’ resumes simply do not stack up to IU’s.

  • TomJameson

The thing is that the committee will make their decisions based on all the factors they’re “supposed to”, plus on how they “feel” about the teams, then justify those decisions however they want … or not even bother with the justification part.

It’s like when a jury hears something they shouldn’t and the judge tells them to disregard it. Yeah, right. lol

And the selection committee hasn’t seemed to be, historically, a friend to IU basketball.
