The Indiana Hoosiers will begin the 2016-2017 season ranked in the USA Today coaches poll.

The preseason poll, released earlier today, has Indiana slotted at No. 12. Four other Big Ten teams are ranked: Michigan State (No. 9), Wisconsin (No. 10), Purdue (No. 15) and Maryland (No. 21).

Ohio State and Michigan both received votes.

The Hoosiers are ranked preseason No. 12 by Athlon Sports, No. 13 by The Sporting News and No. 18 by Blue Ribbon.

Kansas, who Indiana will play in the Armed Forces Classic, is ranked No. 2. Other Indiana non-conference opponents in the preseason top 25 include North Carolina (No. 6) and Louisville (No. 14). Butler, Indiana’s opponent in the Crossroads Classic, received votes.

Duke is the unanimous No. 1 in the poll.

The complete poll is available here.

That seems about right to me for IU. MSU is hard to read- very young and very short with Schilling and Carter out indefinitely with knee injuries. Pee-Eww is over-rated too.

I actually think wisconsin and IU should be ranked ahead of MSU but that ranking is somewhat based on who the coach is. just my opinion.

Very excited about this year; with our experience, depth and athleticism, this is, in my opinion, the best team TC has put together. I have been disappointed by some recruits committing to to other schools, but expect great things this year – and with multiple IU players slotted to be selected in the top 20 of the 2017 NBA draft, we should see more interest from the higher-profile recruits.

They now have only 2 players 6’7″ or taller and both are freshman. I think Wisconsin and IU should be ranked above the Spartans.

I would tend to agree very strongly with your analysis.. Why don’t they just put (Izzo) in parenthesis right after MSU in the rankings.. he is a great coach no doubt, but he really gets the benefit of that, no doubt…lol… I think IU should be ranked ahead of them also.. But who knows? It’s all conjecture right now anyway.. None of them have even played a game yet…

  • inLinE6

I believe the fact that some recruit committed to other schools was simply because our roster is crowded.

If start the season like we finished last there wont be many teams better

I saw it that way too – but still would have been nice to get Waters in and ease him into a starting role. But Cujo sounds like he is going to be a very good player, Green could be one of the biggest surprises this year, Newkirk, Gelon: tough crowd (and a luxury for us).

We should have 5 guards back next year it made no sense for Waters to come to IU look for a good point guard for 2018 when RJ and JN graduate

  • iubase

if IU does end up as there projections show then we should be in the sweet 16 and possible elite 8 in March. I think we have the potential to get to the elite 8 and depending on our matchups could do well….however this is all pure speculation

    Is it November yet?

  • I’m so conflicted. On the one hand, I want to wake up tomorrow and have a game on the schedule. On the other hand, I’m happy there’s still a little time left for players to get healthy and integrated into the lineup.

  • dwdkc

I’m a bit skeptical of MSU also, at least early in the year. Forget the injuries, you don’t replace a Player of the Year and your two best other players (by far), even with a superstud frosh and some other nice young pieces. By March? Izzo will probably have them as a F4 contender with that talent. But Wisconsin is a more likely Big 10 contender.

This time of year any ranking is based on “paper potential”. Until IU and everybody else “prove something”..the rankings are fun to see..but mean not much. Let’s see where the Hoosiers are after the KU-UNC-UL and Butler games have been played.

I don’t have a beef with any of the schools that are ranked ahead of us. WHEN we beat Kansas, we’ll move into the top 5-6.

I know .. You’re probably right.. I much rather would get KW.. But I still wanted us to get Waters.. I think h is going to be a great shooter… Once Blackmon leaves, I don’t think we’ll have a shooter quite like him.. Unless GG really turns out to be that guy.

  • TomJameson

Hahahaha … Technically, you both are right. 5 returning, and 1 being added.

  • Shawn Congo

I think everyone is sleeping on Cujo. Super talented, quick, athletic, nice shot.

  • RDD#76

I agree kid probably went to practice and thought where was his playing time coming from with 2 seniors coming back and 3 newcomers this year
