Five-star forward Kris Wilkes trims list to three

  • 10/06/2016 10:42 pm in

Five-star class of 2017 North Central forward Kris Wilkes has eliminated two schools and now has a final three.

According to Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star, Wilkes is no longer considering Xavier and UConn and will no longer take previously scheduled official visits to those schools.

The three remaining schools Wilkes is considering: Indiana, Illinois and UCLA.

That means the official visit to Indiana, which took place last weekend, will be the last official visit Wilkes will take before making a decision.

Wilkes is ranked the No. 18 prospect nationally according to the 247Composite. As a junior at North Central, he averaged 22.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Indiana currently has three commitments for in the class of 2017: Al Durham, Justin Smith and Clifton Moore.

    Yes! We need this kid!

A kid like this gives room for our project guys to grow. Which quite frankly is exciting for us all.

  • Bruce Clark

Alford has underachieved at UCLA, but as someone who lives on SoCal, this is a tough place to say no to (though I very much hope Wilkes ends up at IU). Don’t get Illinois on this list. Would be great for our future in-state recruiting also if TC can land Wilkes.

  • Chi-Town Hoosier

    Here….we …go

  • Arch Puddington

Regardless of where he goes, the fact that Illinois is in his final three is simply inexplicable. I could get Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Louisville, or any of a dozen other schools, but Ilinois just mystifies me. Heck, even Xavier would make more sense, and he cut them.

Whatever. We’re still in it, and that is good news. Dynamic player, would fit beautifully in CTC’s offense.

  • Berned Out

Well, the encouraging thing is that on 247 the most recent prediction is for IU and Alex’s prediction (although from 8/1) is still for IU.

How could you spend a weekend hanging out with likes of Thomas and OG (and the rest of our crew) and not be charmed by them? I say we get the kid.

  • inLinE6

He’s coming our way. If he wasn’t sure, he’d at least go see Xavier. If he was set on UCLA, he wouldn’t have come last weekend. The fact that he canceled remaining visits right after IU visit said it all.

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

Kris Wilkes!!!! I have a vibe that you are going to be a member of the IU Mens Basketball team!!! Prove me right!! IU needs you. Come’on !!!

  • IU Hoosiers # 34, 1979-83

Especially since Groce is on the “hot seat”.

  • Justin Beard

I hear that man..Things do certainly look promising..
He’s bit the hook just gotta reel him in now.

  • MPmike B

It’s looking pretty good. Usually when a recruit has finish with the last visit, that is when you have a great chance of landing them. Hopefully, Kris will decide on choosing the last school (I.U.) visit which might have made a good impression.

  • Ms hoosier

Any word on when Kris will make his commitment?

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

    Very good sign!!!

  • marcusgresham

Pretty much took the words right out of my mouth.
I, for whatever reason, grew up rooting for UCLA (I’m old, but I’m not old enough to remember Wooden coaching so it wasn’t that. I think as a seven or eight year-old I was in love with those beautiful baby blue & gold jerseys,) and I can see the allure of the west coast, weather, and incredible list of historic players who’ve been there; and even though he hasn’t quite won like people out there expect, I get the pull of Steve Alford (of course, that might be the teen-age Hoosier kid in me.)
Illinois is the one that totally baffles me. They haven’t won much in several years. The inside of that arena looks dull and dingy, even with orange friggin’ paint, and for all the negative stuff said about Crean and Alford, I would think John Groce’s position is far more precarious.
Of course, whomever gets him probably won’t have him long anyway. Sure would love to see him & Romeo Langford play together for at least one season in Bloomington, though.

  • marcusgresham

I hope you’re right, but the proximity of home to Bloomington means he might as well take the visit just to be certain.
I think cancelling the other visits means it’s one of the three he’s seen–if it meant, “I’ve seen IU and that’s all I need to know,” I think he’d have gone ahead and made the announcement.

I believe Wilkes will go to IU, no comparison between IU, and UCLA xcept for the climate, I see UCLA games on TV, and they cant fill half the seats, and LA fans act like the are asleep during the games, GOING TO SAY WILKES WILL BE HEADED TO IU, AND CREAN IS RECRUITING WELL , was Oladipo a project ? Worked out well, # 2 pick in the NBA DRAFT !!! GO HOOSIERS !!!

  • HuntinHoosier86

In the words of CTC, “It’s Indiana…It’s Indiana”.

  • SilentBob

Thank god they sign their LOIs as 17 and 18 yr olds and not 14 year olds. Then we really would have no chance lol. Hard to compete with bikini season year round

  • SilentBob

Just climate? Try the whole culture. LA probably has the most diverse population in the entire world and as a result cultivates and is home to some of the greatest artists of the world across all platforms. If they were winning itd be a done deal I imagine.

Honestly the only thing that would keep me away is the climate. Too much for a pale Irish boy like me, doubt Kris has the same problem lol

  • CreamandCrimson

No…he hasn’t announced any commitment date.

  • millzy32

Indiana girls are pretty cute too once they take off their North Face and their gloves and ski masks.

  • millzy32

Maybe he’s got a girl in Champaign?

  • CreamandCrimson

I’ve seen Kris Wilkes play quite a few times and he is a pleasure to watch. I think he’d be a tremendous fit at IU and he’s long been the 2017 target I’ve most hoped would end up in Bloomington. He’s a very good athlete that moves very fluidly…it’s a bit difficult for me to explain but I guess I’d say that he “glides” and then is capable of bursts of speed when in transition. His offensive game is very versatile…he’s not a knockdown shooter just yet (very nice and consistent form though) but he can definitely score in a variety of ways. He finishes well on drives, is good mid-range and is increasingly comfortable from three. Wilkes is a pretty good rebounder, although not elite there, and a good ball-handler for his size. I think he has the frame to quickly add 10-15 pounds in IU’s strength program and he has the length and quickness to be a real terror on defense. In my opinion, he’s the second best player in the state (after Romeo Langford) and, if he commits to IU, he’ll be a near-lock to win Mr. Basketball and be a McDonald’s All-American.

This recruitment is not over but I have been told (others seem to agree and are hearing the same thing) that the Hoosiers are a strong leader and clearly atop his list. Here’s to hoping he commits to IU soon!

  • Donnie Vick

I’m afraid I’d take cold, blistery winters in bloomington over LA everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

  • Donnie Vick

    Xavier is just as close

  • N71

If it works out and we add Kris then where do we go from there? Waters and Gak? That would make for 6…that’s quite a few.

  • SilentBob

Sweatpants and long sleeve shirt weather is my favorite. The drive to Bloomington is always gorgeous this time of year. Now that I’m older (just 23) I enjoy more the comforts of home, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume a great deal of teenagers in this state don’t feel the same way. I didn’t, my friends didn’t.

Of course these guys travel a heck of a lot more than I did in high school so maybe they’re different. But the lure of the coasts is usually too much to pass up for a lot of young people.

  • WhatsUpKnight2.0

trying really hard not to count my pinstriped chickens here. i just don’t want my heart broken. please KW, say you’ll be ours!

  • inLinE6

You know higher ranked kids like some drama. There’re not many of them just send out their decision on twitter or announce via their coach. From what I’ve seen from last decade, it’ll always be some finalists and people won’t know until last minute at some press conference live streamed by media. Attention is fun, I guess.

  • Bruce Clark

It’s been seven years since Illinois finished above .500 in the Big Ten conference – and IU lit them up for 103 points at home last year. IU has proven player development and great facilities.

Stay home Kris and let’s hang more banners at IU!

  • Bruce Clark

As a native Hoosier, I miss the change of seasons. Traffic is crazy out here and LA also has terrible pollution. Beaches in LA County are dirty and crowded, so if Kris ventured off the UCLA campus I hope he noticed those things.

  • robmac10

Love it! hope he knows the following equation:

2 hour drive from Btown > settling for a lesser program.

  • dwdkc

For a team that, if Collin redshirts, technically has zero openings. Yikes. I think we will stop at 5, hope it’s Waters.

  • BMusic

I’m sorry, but there’s no contest. The gene pool out here in LA is off the charts. Every beautiful young man or lady who was ever convinced to come to LA and try to get famous came here, settled down and had kids. Maybe mixed paint with some of the ethnically diverse pool of potential mates. There are cute girls in Indiana—especially on a college campus—but there are models running around all over the place out here in SoCal.

  • SCHoosier

Can somebody explain ILL to me?

  • ArghSonOfOhCrap

It is looking pretty good… Come on Kris needing you is an under statement.

  • millzy32

I spent a lot of time out there for work and wasn’t all that impressed. I find the % of attractiveness in humans is pretty much the same everywhere. It’s really a crap shoot. Ugly people have cute kids all the time and vice versa. People out there are probably a little more active though and that definitely helps.

  • millzy32

I couldn’t help but notice all those things when I spent the majority of about a year out there. I had a great apartment in a beach community but had to travel across town for work. The temperature is definitely the best thing going.

  • millzy32

Also, if he has a girl there why not go somewhere else and have a girl in a few places. Win win I say.

  • millzy32

Don’t we have one open scholly or am I wrong?

  • millzy32

Well it’s a state directly west of Indiana. It’s largest city is Chicago and its capital is Springfield. In Wisconsin they not so affectionately label people from Illinois as FIB’s. I’m not at liberty to write what a FIB is or I would get blocked but the I stands for Illinois and the other two words are the bad ones you think they are.

  • b_side

Someone on the Illini staff is doing a great job selling these high level players. That’s the only explanation for landing guys like Coleman-Lands and Le’Ron Black. Definitely doesn’t seem logical on the surface, but parents and kids are clearly buying it (or in the case of Wilkes, at least considering it).

  • ArghSonOfOhCrap

    well done

  • ArghSonOfOhCrap

Priller would be gone or if not him then someone else

  • SoCal Hoosier

I’ve lived in LA for 30 years and I too would take cold, blistery winters in Bloomington over LA every day of the week and twice on Sunday…especially if Assembly Hall is rocking on that Sunday

  • Donnie Vick

I’ve lived outside of Indiana now since 2004. I’ve lived in the South and in the mid-Atlantic. Nobody knows basketball like the Hoosier faithful! I’m not even sure they know what it is in South Carolina!

  • VAHoosier

Yeah, but we can count on Bryant, OG, and JBJ moving on, I think. Throw in the obligatory transfer or two, and we’ll be alright.

  • John D Murphy

CH will not redshirt. Crean has not redshirted and given a 5th year in his IU tenure. CH will be back this season…late and ineffective or simply gone. If I am wrong, please let me know what you are basing that on other than “gut”.

  • pcantidote

It just cannot be Illinois, right? Maybe he is buddies with Eric Gordon and he told him to keep them on the list just to break their hearts?

  • pcantidote

I think we would give CH the redshirt. Crean has not had someone worthy of a redshirt and CH is certainly worthy. This is all assuming that his season is over which we have no idea.

  • pcantidote

I lived in SoCal for 7 years and beg to differ…unless you happen to work in the entertainment industry. I was never impressed with the ladies out there. Chicago blows it away.
