The preseason accolades continue to pile up for Indiana senior Yogi Ferrell.

The Sporting News announced its three preseason All-American teams on Monday morning and Ferrell was named to the second team.

Joining Ferrell on the second team are Providence’s Kris Dunn, Kentucky’s Skal Labissiere, Kansas’s Wayne Selden and Wichita State’s Fred VanVleet.

The first team includes Wichita State’s Ron Baker, Wisconsin’s Nigel Hayes, Virginia’s Malcolm Brodgon, Iowa State’s Georges Niang and North Carolina’s Marcus Paige.

The third team includes Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield, Maryland’s Melo Trimble, Kentucky’s Jamal Murray, LSU’s Ben Simmons and Gonzaga’s Kyle Wiltjer.

In addition to The Sporting News preseason All-American team, Ferrell was named the No. 4 point guard in the country by Lindy’s Sports and a third team preseason All-American by Athlon Sports.

Finally, someone who thinks Yogi is better than Melo.

Yogi deserves all the accolades he gets, and (IMO) even more. I really hope this is the year that he can reach a balance in his scoring and assists. This is probably the first team he’s been on that has great offensive potential at all positions, which of course should help with his assists. And since there is so much more offense surrounding him, I think his offense won’t slack off from last year.

I also fervently hope that he ends up just killing it on the court to the tune of being on the post-season 1st team All American. It probably won’t hurt that he is going to be setting a lot of IU records this year.

You could argue that he had greater offensive potential surrounding him his freshman year, but he has gotten so much better since then.

That’s the whole thing, his offense wasn’t really at it’s peak at that time. That first year he was mostly a facilitator, and did a great job at it.

  • let’s get to 1st Team All-American after the season’s over, Yogi!

Yogi deserves some of that love. Ironic that he and VanFleet (who ate IU’s lunch in the NCAA last year) are both on the second team.

McDonald’s All-American that is a 4 yr starter? I think it’s fair to expect this level of production from Yogi and I think we’ll see it. I know IU will need it to attain anywhere near what we all hope & expect.

Who growing up ever thought they’d see the day when only one team had a guy on the 1st and 2nd team All-American list and that team would be Wichita St?
Don’t get me wrong, I remember the X-Man and even before him I remember the team with Cliff Levingston, Antoine Carr, and Aubrey Sherrod, but still…

Dang Wichita State. You could make a case for Van Vleet being first team over Paige too. WSU has the best backcourt in the nation.

I’d take the 3rd team over the 1st team any day.

  • SilentBob

Yea I think I’d take every PG on these lists over Paige. And having Simmons on third team is a joke. If he isn’t the best player in the NCAA next year he will certainly be top 3

Main reason we win the Big 10 this year.
    No. 11

That 3rd team is super talented.
