Q & A: O.G. Anunoby talks IU commitment

Class of 2015 Jefferson City (Mo.) forward O.G. Anunoby became the second member of Indiana’s 2015 recruiting class tonight when he announced his commitment to the Hoosiers at his high school.

Inside the Hall spoke with Anunoby about the decision and a full transcript of our Q & A is transcribed below:

On why he decided on Indiana:

“I just felt it was the best fit for me. I like the coaching staff. They probably recruited me the hardest.”

On what he liked about the coaching staff:

“How much they want to get their players better. I liked that a lot.”

On how difficult the decision was and whether he went back and forth on it:

“I went back and forth a few times. It was a difficult decision, but I knew Indiana was the place for me. That’s where my heart was.”

On when he knew that Indiana was a school that he was seriously considering and what stood out on his visits:

“After the first visit (unofficial in early August). Usually on visits, the assistant coach would lead the visit and then you’d talk to the head coach at the very end. But at Indiana, it was coach (Tom) Crean leading everything. It was different there. He got my high school film, we watched all of it, he played clips and stuff and showed me where I can get better, where I’m good right now and what I can improve on. I liked that a lot.”

On his relationship with Juwan Morgan:

“I’m excited to play with him. Juwan is a good friend of mine. We wanted to play together the past couple of years on the AAU circuit. That didn’t happen, but he’s a good friend of mine and I’m happy that I get to play with him now.”

On what he’s most looking forward to about playing at Indiana:

“Just playing under the bright lights in the Big Ten. Playing for coach Crean. And wearing the candy stripes.”

On what it’s going to be like stepping into a full Assembly Hall for the first time:

“I think it’ll be crazy. A crazy atmosphere, crazy fan support. They have really good fan support.”

On how he would describe his game to someone that hasn’t seen him play:

“I’d say I’m a wing. During AAU, I didn’t really shoot the ball because on my team we had a lot of guards and they needed me to play inside and I embraced that role. In high school, I’m strictly perimeter. Well, I post up if I have a mismatch, but I’m on the perimeter a lot handling the ball and shooting a lot of 3s. I make a lot of 3s. All of my stuff comes from the perimeter. That’s where I’m most comfortable.”

On the areas he’d like to improve:

“I think I shoot the ball pretty well off the dribble, but I want to get better on the pull-up.”

On what he thought when he had a chance to watch Indiana practice on his official visit:

“I saw the players getting better. From the first day I watched practice to the second day, I saw all of the players getting better. They really pay attention to detail and it’s really intense. That’s a good thing. I like that.”

Four years from now, OG will be a LOT better. Good move Coach.

You must have missed the original post.

“And wearing the candy stripes” gotta love it from such a great recruit

Serious question… is he going to be allowed to wear his headband?

    welcome to Indiana

Is he playing with Jaylen Fisher?

    “I’m a wing.”

    6’8″, 210lbs… That’s a big-ass wing. That’s an NBA sized 3 right there.

I don’t want to contradict him, but I think he’s going to have to accept the fact he’ll be needed on the inside more than on he perimeter. That doesn’t mean he’ll be forced into a role he can’t handle – after all, Crean’s system **really** puts high value on players who can drive the lane from the perimeter and pop a jumper when the lane closes – but I don’t imagine he’ll get to haunt the perimeter as much as he’d want. He’s simply too big to keep out of the paint by design.

He had me at “And wearing the candy stripes.”

Watching the highlight video, the thing I liked the most is after every dunk or layup, he was immediately back on D. Didn’t seem to showboat or anything.

  • TomJameson

On his AAU team he played inside and “embraced” that role, but in HS he played the perimeter more. I think he’ll be blending those roles in CTCs system. You said it AJ, drive the lane or pop a jumper … and they ALL crash the boards.

Work to do but this kid could be a real deal by his junior year. He’ll be 6-8 and 225 to start his college career..and will still be able to soar!!

  • CreanFaithful

    A “3” is a wing… In college he’s looking like a 3 or 4.

  • FinEndNow

I’d rather see him on the wing honestly. I’d rather have him at the “3” than the “4” next year backing up Troy Williams.

  • David Yaraschefski

Excited about landing this kid. Also – is there anything more annoying than recruit videos that constantly slow down the footage to make it “awesome” ? Can I just watch it normally in full speed and make my own grown up decisions?

  • Yep, always love seeing recruits say that. Gotta appreciate when they appreciate the tradition.

Congratulations to OG Anunoby on earning a college scholarship and committing to be a part of Hoosier Nation. It’s a dream many of us have had and it’s always cool to see a guy’s hard work pay off.

I am always interested in roster construction and how a team fits together…it’s hard for me to focus too much on 2015-2016 when I’m so excited about the current roster but here we go:
    PG – Yogi Ferrell
SG – James Blackmon Jr. (also can play PG), Stanford Robinson, Robert Johnson (also can play PG), Nick Zeisloft
Forwards/Wings – Troy Williams, Devin Davis, Emmitt Holt, Max Hoetzel, Tim Priller, Collin Hartman, OG Anunoby, Juwan Morgan
“Bigs” – Hanner Mosquera-Perea, Jeremiah April

It appears Shake Milton won’t be joining up and Thomas Bryant is a “maybe”. I don’t see much playing time in the present or future for some of these guys but there’s a lot of time between now and next season and there’s not room for everyone I just listed. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

  • Hoosier Pride

I was wondering the same, probably not..

  • AJ_IU_ColtsFan

Oh, heck yeah. Victor will always be the shining example for Crean’s era of what’s possible with hard work and desire. That has to be one of the positives for OG.

  • Ole Man

Well, one of those on the list won’t be “on the list”. That’s fourteen and we only have 13 schollys.

  • FinEndNow

Sadly… I’d really like to see some of the players be themselves. His headband seems to just be a part of him. Part of his “mojo.” You know?

  • CreamandCrimson

We actually have 15 now, not 14 and I’m aware of the scholarship limit, hence my comment….”there’s not room for everyone I just listed. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.”
