Blackmon Jr. selected for 2014 Jordan Brand Classic

Class of 2014 Indiana signee James Blackmon Jr. was selected to participate in this year’s Jordan Brand Classic, according to the game’s Twitter account.

Blackmon Jr. will be on the East roster in the April 18th game that will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Jordan Brand Classic is in its 13th year.

Indiana, Ohio State (D’Angelo Russell), Michigan (Kameron Chatman) were the only three Big Ten schools to have a signee selected for this year’s game.

“The McDonald’s game is always going to be the pinnacle, but this game is right there,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said. “That’s a huge reward for a great year for James. It’s a big deal.”

Past Indiana players to be selected for the Jordan Brand Classic include Noah Vonleh (2013), Troy Williams (2013), Eric Gordon (2007), Robert Vaden (2004), D.J. White (2004) and Bracey Wright (2002).

Blackmon Jr., the No. 28 recruit in the 247Composite, will also play in the McDonald’s All-American game on April 2 in Chicago and the Nike Hoop Summit on April 12 in Portland, Oregon.

The Whitehead decision continues to be a head-scratcher. I can see Syracuse, Michigan State, Indiana or Louisville…but Seton Hall?

  • inLinE6

Why no Robert Johnson? I thought he performed well this senior season.

  • Indiana_Banners

Blackmon is a stud, man I can’t wait to see him suit up. He’s going to scorch the nets.

  • Indiana_Banners

His HS coach will probably be hired as an assistant coach over the summer. I think that was a big piece of it.

Imagine if we could’ve lured Blackmon AND Whitehead *drools*

  • MillaRed

I do not see another Anthony Davis heading to Kentucky again. And those natives are getting restless. Hope they suck all over again. Well, they won’t we are NIT bound suck. But still suck.

  • CreamandCrimson

Here’s an article from after his commitment from SI…

Kevin Willard (Seton Hall’s coach for now) rather openly cut a deal with Tiny Morton (Whitehead’s HS coach). Morton was shopping around to other schools (including St. John’s and you would presume IU) but apparently Seton Hall was the best school to bite on his offer. Thus, Whitehead to Seton Hall. I’m glad it appears that we don’t do things that way.

  • Kyl470

I’m ok with missing on Whitehead. He is another player that drives to the basket and doesn’t have a good outside shot. We have plenty of guys who fit that mold this year. Blackmon is a pure shooter and that is what IU needs next year.

  • Hang tight because I’m sure you’re still going to be drooling once you see Robert Johnson play.

  • JetpackJunky

I know Kentucky already proved that they can blow it with the best recruits, but I can’t help but be impressed when I see their name four times on this list tied only by Duke.

  • Really bummed out that Ohio State is getting an official visit from Miles Turner and we got cut on his first list, before we got a visit. That kid is going to be a game changer.

  • Crazy to think they are getting restless with a coach that took them to 2 final fours and won a National Championship just 2 seasons ago. Tom Crean thinks he has pressure? Try dealing with those expectations.

  • JetpackJunky

I think he’s Duke’s to lose. They couldn’t have picked a better game for his visit than Saturday night really. It showed the atmosphere that only the Crazies can really provide. I don’t know what Thad has up his sleeve other than “the roster won’t be as crowded with other talented people”

  • Snookafly

I know, and I think it’s hilarious. They may just run Cal out of town, and frankly, he’s their best shot at another title this decade. He may not be the best coach in the world, but if he gets canned after a title, no one good will want to take the job for a long time. I’m loving every minute of their nosedive.

  • Snookafly

The atmosphere at Cameron Indoor is highly overrated. If Assembly Hall is a cathedral of basketball, that building is like a down home church.

  • Snookafly

He did, but so did everyone else in the top 150.

  • WhatsUpKnight

i wonder if it’s a more likely scenario that he goes back to the nba.

  • SCHoosier

Boy Duke, NC and KY loading up again…!!

  • JetpackJunky

Everyone loves down home churches. Not so many people love cathedrals. They’re high energy and exciting rather than drab and boring. Which Assembly Hall definitely was this year.

Not that any of that matters because we’re comparing Cameron Indoor to Value City not to Assembly Hall.

  • plane1972

If Kentucky was wise, it would open the vault and try to lure Bill Self. He’s the only one besides Coach K who can recruit with the likes of what Cal and can actually coach them when they arrive. No way I would leave Kansas for that job, but he’d be one of the very few guys who could make a run in Lexington under those expectations.

  • Kenneth234

Whitehead can shoot without any problem. I have no problem with him going to Seton Hall to be the man there. It was a decision that will either work really well for him, or will make things harder without a high level supporting cast in a conference that returns many upper class players. I would say that he is not far off the type of shooter that Blackmon is, but I would be surprised if he didn’t leave after just one season there.

  • Ole Man

    Who would want him?

  • Shawn Congo

Syracuse???? I hear it’s terrible there bc of the large venue.

  • Snookafly

Don’t forget Kansas. When it’s all said and done they’ll probably get Turner too.

  • Snookafly

If we were smart we’d do the same thing, but Self always said KU was his dream job.

  • Snookafly

The “crazies” are the scrawniest group of nerds you will ever see in your life. I really don’t see a 5-star player getting blown away or intimidated by any of them, or the tent slum they consider the highlight of college social life. I’d rather play in a building with twice the capacity and better acoustics. The best thing Cameron has going is the home cooking from the officials. You may not lose, but by God, you will be cheated.

  • Snookafly

Kansas looks impressive. MSU probably has the best student section, but is surprisingly dumpy and generic in every other respect (outdated “ring”). Duke is a huge disappointment. Syracuse is big, but that makeshift half-dome is pretty dumpy too. I definitely think we’ve got the ability to be #1 on nights when our seats aren’t packed with old codgers who refuse to cheer. Ask Krzyzewski about how loud it gets here.

  • JetpackJunky

All right. Continue to believe Cameron Indoor has nothing to do with Duke’s recruiting at all while players hold official visits in a half-empty Assembly Hall booing the players and at least we’ll always have something to complain about here on this site.

  • plane1972

Imagine him working for Phil Jackson. They would have to hold staff meetings at the Garden to accommodate both of those egos in the same room.

  • millzy32

I know this is tough for people on this site or any IU fan to swallow but sadly the KU job is a better job than ours. Self wouldn’t leave KU for the IU job. Need someone who has Indiana ties. Brad Stevens would have been the fit if he hadn’t gone to Celtics.

  • millzy32

In size it compares more with Hinkle than Assembly Hall. Very overrated.

  • Ole Man

KU, one. IU, two. The rest really don’t matter.
