Five-star guard Isaiah Whitehead picks Seton Hall

  • 09/19/2013 3:13 pm in

After announcing a list of five schools earlier in the week, class of 2014 Lincoln (N.Y.) guard Isaiah Whitehead ended the recruiting process in a press conference on Thursday afternoon at his high school.

The five-star guard announced that he’ll play for Seton Hall next season. Additionally, The New York Post is reporting that Seton Hall will hire Whitehead’s high school coach, Tiny Morton, next season.

“I would like to announce that I’ll be taking my talents to Seton Hall University,” Whitehead said at his press conference.

Whitehead, the No. 17 player in the 247Composite, also considered Indiana, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and St. John’s.

The 6-foot-4 guard took an unofficial visit to Bloomington in late August.

Indiana remains involved with several other backcourt options in the class of 2014, most notably James Blackmon Jr., Lourawls Nairn and Robert Johnson, who will announce his decision on Friday.

Nairn is scheduled to take an official visit to Bloomington this weekend and Blackmon Jr. has discussed using making of his five official visits to Indiana.

Australian star Dante Exum also has Indiana in his list of five finalists.

That was fast…almost like it was known….

  • Kerry Smith

No surprise here. He was never expected to go to IU. Three players have rejected us in one day. Yikes!

  • Collin

Well, at least he picked a program over us that is well respected and successful.

I completely understand the staying at home factor, though. Best of luck to him.

  • hardcore_hoosier

Ever since Lebron’s ‘decision’ everybody has to ‘take their talents’ somewhere. Best of luck Isaiah!

  • HannerTime Hoosier

Darn, looks like the whitehead got popped! He will do well regardless.

  • WhatsUpKnight

o well, no hard feelings. i’m happy for him and his HS basketball coach. stay classy, seton hall!

  • CreamandCrimson

If hiring his high school coach is what it took to get him….glad we didn’t get him. Best of luck to Isaiah and the Pirates.

  • r

What was fast, yet not known? The fact his high school coach was being hired? I would agree, it was very fast.

  • Tucsonhoosier

“taking my talents” to seton hall…. Come on man

  • Ole Man

SH use to be well-respected; but they certainly haven’t been successful recently.

  • WhatsUpKnight

    and his coach!

  • Ole Man

He was giving IU serious thought.
Don’t know where that “never expected” came from.
Many of us thought he could land here.

  • Walton

Pretty good for a team that went 18-36 in conference play the last 3 years

  • WhatsUpKnight

well, the field just got smaller, not a whole lot of sg’s left.

  • Ole Man

I still don’t want Nairn. Blackmon is at MI this weekend.
    Exum is going pro.
RJ is probably UNC (and oddly, that doesn’t bother me)
GO is enough for next year.

  • hoosieRocker

Best of luck to him at Seton Hall. Now I’ve gotta start counting down to tomorrow at 3:30 when RJ states his commitment!

  • N71

    Two warning signs:

    1) “I’m taking my talents” = lack of humility

    2) I’m taking my coach = extortion

Based on that it wasn’t a good fit for IU.

  • SeattleHoosier

Who are the other two? Hurt and Hill? Thought they were yesterday.

  • Ole Man

Please! Enough with “not a good fit for IU” every time a kid picks someone else.
Not picking on you; as there will be many more with the same type of comment.

If he had said IU, you would have loved him!

  • WhatsUpKnight

good call! add to it that he picked a lousy bball school like SH and i don’t feel too badly that we didn’t get him

  • Ole Man

Yesterday, or today. Doesn’t matter. I didn’t make that post; Kerry did.

  • WhatsUpKnight

i dunno. i still think pinson and jb jr would have been great fits. this guy, not so much

  • AKA Hoosier Daddy

Don’t understand Seton Hall over IU just to play closer to home and what does SH have that IU doesn’t other than ISAIAH WHITEHEAD? Indiana keeps loosing top tier recruits even after putting 5 players in the pro leagues ….what seems to be IU’s problem? Now if IU doesn’t get RJ or JBJ then what..ya know its getting reallyfrustrating to the point of being ..well I guess you all understand so know what Lourawls Nairn …I certainly hope not…..Anyway goodluck to IW and his coach..???

  • Ole Man

Agree on Pinson and JB jr.
Thought the latter would really get his act together under CTC.

Whitehead would probably have started next year. Two years under the system, with some work ethic, and he goes top 15 in the draft.

  • WhatsUpKnight

i think geography played a big part, as it probably will with tomorrow’s announcement. personally, i’m more disappointed about losing all the guys in our backyard (harris, irvin, lyles, lyle, jb jr, bluitt, etc…).

  • Ole Man

Seton Hall choice was about an adult, his coach, looking out for himself; and getting in the kid’s ear to do it.

  • r

His name is Jerry. Jerry Smith wasn’t well received on here, so he changed his name to Kerry.

  • SCHoosier

A great player off to b-ball wasteland never to be seen on national TV in college again. Wants to stay close to a mom..who urged him to “get away to go to school.”. Hiring his HS coach was icing on the cake. I understand the young man wanting to stay close to home..and I knew IU was dead in the water when IW made the comments about B-town..”What would I DO there”? Glad he thought enuff of IU to visit. This was an expected disappointment…Johnson going somewhere else would be a hurtful disappointment. Assume if RJ goes elsewhere..TC will pound the tom-tom for tum-tum during his visit this weekend?

  • Ole Man

Would like to have seen a late push for Alexander and Lyle as a package.
    We could have used both.

  • Ole Man

Thanks. And if that’s true, then for sure don’t assign his quotes to me! LOL!

  • adam

seton hall picked up sina from their 2013 class (guy we offered) and also now have 3 pretty nicely ranked guys in the 2014 class. they appear to be on their way up looking at all of that.

congrats to him and his coach

we will still be fine this year.

  • r

Having the others choose elsewhere leaves scholarship openings for Okonoboh and Robinson. That wouldn’t be bad at all.

  • Walton

The coach and player package recruitment just doesn’t sound legal, not just in this cases

  • Kenny “The Jet” Smith

Ohhhhhhhh wow. You had 50% chance picking all others over IU and you got it correct. Good job Kerry you should be proud. Maybe you could help me pick what side to chose when flipping coins.

  • AKA Hoosier Daddy

Gottta Agree with ya but up in PukE country they also hire family…I think its a trend now a days

  • Snookafly

I agree. Goodluck is our best bet, and the player that will benefit our current roster the most. I’d take JBJ’s shooting, but I don’t want another sub 6’0″ player unless he’s a freak of nature on the court.

  • Shawn Congo

Nobody was talking about this when CKJ was hired. Pretty sure his ties to players in our recruiting zone (DC/MD) had a lot to do with that.

  • Snookafly

I would say: at least he picked a program that is inconsequential so we don’t have to worry about him coming back to bite us. I wish him the best, but Seton Hall isn’t going to be a threat anytime soon.

  • AKA Hoosier Daddy

Good point but I don’t think CKJ brought a player with him at the same time he was hired but the outside connections doesn’t hurt either.

  • Funk

Maybe a stupid question, but thoughts on JaQuan Lyle since his decommitment from Louisville?

  • Moore23

Whitehead: “I couldn’t leave my mom, so I had to stay close….perhaps CTC should have offered her a coaching job!

  • Oldguyy

    He’s still flaky.

  • Aiken_Hoosier

    Correct…..and a constant troll on this board…..just ignore him…..

  • Remy Willing and Abell

And another swing and a miss!

  • Tucson Hoosier

I may be joining some of you on the ledge if we don’t land Johnson tomorrow. I may have the strengh to keep from jumping until after Hoosier Hysteria, but I will need a committment from Goodluck or Robinson to keep me sane. I am a really big fan of Lourawls and would love to have him as a Hoosier as well. In the meantime, I will just stick with prescription medication.
I am taking this recruiting business way too seriously.

  • Gregory Spera

OK, I’m going to say it… We absolutely have to start turning this around by landing Johnson tomorrow. Not saying the world is going to end, but, seriously, we really need some good news soon.

  • Erik Holm

Crean had some good gets after his first couple years had some similar ‘yikes’ conference records.

  • BMusic

He was not a good fir for IU. How do I know this? Because he didn’t come here. These things work out the way they’re meant to work out. Give me a team of undervalued Victor Oladipos any day—guys willing to buy in, work hard, and get better. Not to “take their talents” here or there.

  • aHoopandaPrayer

I recall a number of negative comments directed at CTC when CKJ was hired. Lots of negativity about hiring a Towson assistant just for recruiting.

  • Jamie Rund

As talented as this kid is, why pick Seton Hall. No chance at making the NCAA tournament, and no chance of being in the real spot light of college basketball. Pitt or St. John’s would have been a better choice if he wanted to stay close to home. On paper it doesn’t look like a great career move. I guess we will see how it plays out.
