LOUISVILLE, Ky. — 2013 Indiana signee Troy Williams arrived in the bluegrass state on Wednesday afternoon for the Derby Festival Basketball Classic, which will take place on Friday at Freedom Hall.

His first stop was Basketball Academy, where he, along with Collin Hartman, Devin Davis, Luke Fischer and Stanford Robinson, met with the media. Williams talked about his future in Bloomington, how he hopes to contribute to next season’s team and much more:

  • Noah Vonleh may be the best recruit we have coming in next year, and guys like Devin, Collin, Luke, and Stan may have committed before he did, but if you ask me I believe Troy is going to end up being the leader of this class. He’s always engaging with fans (many times with me), shows love for the game, and his emotional intensity really brings energy to everyone around him. He’s obviously got work to do (who doesn’t?), but I’m so happy we’ve got him.

I’ve been saying for some time now that I thought Troy has a good chance of being the surprise of this recruiting class, even with the accolades that he comes to IU with. He may not have the biggest and best stat line at the end of the games but he will, IMHO, with his skill set that, again IMHO, will allow him to do numerous things at numerous positions and will provide CTC with a lot of flexibility to use a very athletic player to match up with other teams. We’ve seen first hand with WS, CW & VO’s ability to guard / play multiple positions how that kind of thing can really help a team in so many ways.

Agreed – calling it now… sleeper of the class!

  • In highlight film, Troy reminds me of (and this is going back a long way) John Havlicek–always moving, never takes plays off, and is not hesitant to get in there w/the bigger players tofight for a rebound on either end of the court. I think he has the tools and mindset to become one of the “greats” at IU.

I get that he’s not as highly ranked as Vonleh but it cracks me up when everyone calls this kid a sleeper. He’s the 2nd rated recruit in our class and up until recently he was ranked in the low 30s.

I love the fact that he wants to replicate Vic’s success. Being so close to Vic, I’m sure he understands the work that goes into it as well.

Also great to hear that Vic’s development played a role in choosing coach Crean. Stories like Vic & DWade are going to add so much strength to the program’s recruiting process. Crean & Crimson all the way!!!

A high flier..and a killer in transition b-ball. If Troy refines his shot and commits to being another VO on D..he certainly will help assure the Hoosiers gt to the next level.

Very engaging and thoughtful, he’s obviously very bright, and loves the game. This will translate into tremendous success. He’s fun to listen to because he doesn’t just give canned answers like, “I give 100%”, “I’m working hard on my game”, etc. He listens to the questions and gives great, well thought answers.

  • my guess is that Davis will be the sleeper of this class, i think of Vic when i see him!
