Crean, Hoosiers will look to end losing streak against Wisconsin

CHICAGO — Entering the Big Ten Tournament, there were only two conference teams the Hoosiers hadn’t beaten this season: Illinois and Wisconsin.

The Hoosiers took care of the first one in an 80-64 victory Friday afternoon at the United Center. They’ll get a chance at the second on Saturday.

No. 3 Indiana (27-5) will play the Badgers for the second time this season at 1:40 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Wisconsin won the teams’ only regular season meeting, 64-59, at Assembly Hall on Jan. 15. The Badgers beat Michigan on Friday to advance to the tournament’s semifinal round.

Tom Crean probably wouldn’t admit it, but Saturday’s game has to mean a little bit extra to him because of the opponent. Wisconsin is the only Big Ten school Crean hasn’t beaten during his tenure in Bloomington (0-9). Oh, and Bo Ryan is an old rival from Crean’s days at Marquette.

Why the success against the Hoosiers?

“I don’t know about anything that you’re talking about,” Ryan said. “What would I know about that? … I don’t even think about those kind of things. Never have. People that know me will tell you that.”

Wisconsin freshman guard Sam Dekker provided a better breakdown, but he wouldn’t go as far as to say the Badgers have Indiana’s number.

“It’s always a big stage,” Dekker said.” Indiana is a storied program, it’s always a game that we get amped up to play. Whenever you’re playing a team that that’s good and whenever you have respect for a team like that, you want to go out there and knock them off and let people know what you’re made of.”

Wisconsin (22-10) limped into the Big Ten tournament by losing two of three games down the stretch, and the Badgers didn’t exactly look like an elite team in the first half of Friday’s game against Michigan. But like they always do, the Badgers slowed the game down, mucked it up a bit, and won.

That’s the formula that has helped Wisconsin own Indiana of late. The Hoosiers want to get out and run. Wisconsin would like nothing more than to keep them from doing so.

“The past few times we’ve played them, we’ve done just enough to find some wins,” said Wisconsin forward Jared Berggren. “We’ve had some success against them. We know that they’re gonna be hungry to get some revenge on us.”

Playing to win

Every year around conference tournament time, there is talk of the fatigue associated with making a run to the championship game. Some will always argue losing on Saturday is better for the team in the long run.

Will Sheehey was asked after Friday’s game whether the Hoosiers’ goal is to win the Big Ten tournament title. Sheehey shook his head, and then smiled.

“Of course, man,” he said.

The reporter rephrased his question. Sheehey’s answer didn’t change.

“We wanna win it,” he said. “I think every team in it is equally as hungry as us.”

Regardless of whether the Hoosiers advance to Sunday and win the tournament, their seeding in the NCAA tournament is likely already secured. Indiana all but locked up a No. 1 seed with its win on Friday, and likely in the Midwest region. The only thing still to play for is the No. 1 overall seed, which isn’t all that significant anyway.

“I would hope we have done enough [for a No. 1 seed],” Crean said. “I think when you have the league the way that it is and you win it outright the way that we did. And I think one of the bigger things is the way we played on the road and the only home losses that Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State have are to us. And that says a lot, because those are three teams that can win a national championship and have been considered that way most of the year. So I would hope that we have, but that just remains to be seen.”

Inside the locker room

Here’s some of the best reaction to Victor Oladipo’s 360-degree dunk against Illinois on Friday.

“I’d give it an ‘8’. You should see what he can do. He can do better than that.”

— Will Sheehey

“I’ve seen it all. So anything you guys see that you think is ‘Wow!’ I just think is normal from him.”

— Yogi Ferrell

“There’s plenty of options, but I just went with the safer one.”

— Oladipo

I cannot wait to see Hoosiers beat Badgers badly tomorrow. VO, show us your 360 slam again! Go HOOSIERS!!!

  • SCHoosier

Revenge is for the Bible and movies..IU needs to beat WIS cause we are the better team..and last game got lulled into a deep sleep by their play D..milking the clock and shoot a good % .. They are very capable of doing that tomorrow if we let them. Worst thing we can do is try to speed the game up BEYOND where the Hoosiers can play effectively without turnovers. WIS sucked their last couple of games because they lost their shooting touch..they found it second half today and you can bet..it will b e there tomorrow. Do your thing Hoosiers..tough D..control the boards..and play at your pace..but not in a reckless manner.

I’m throwing a St. Patty’s Day party tomorrow night. House full of Badgers. Please let me feel fantastic and beat the poo out of these guys. I have been waiting too long!!

  • WatchingYogi_atYogis

I thought it was “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” No, that is the movies. But some good ones…

  • WisconHoosier

Agree that it will be a tough game. Wisconsin not only thinks they can win this game, they’re aiming to win the tournament. IU will be given nothing. They’ll have to take it. It wouldn’t shock me if the final score was 64-61.

    Go IU.

“11 in a row. 11 in a row!” Mr. Dekker taking a slightly different tone before the game when he might pay for it then after the game when he could do it with impunity. Short sighted weasel should get his comeuppance tomorrow.

  • maybeitsme

Win, but no grandstanding. And be safe — no injuries.

  • InTheMtns

I don’t think the team looks at it as revenge; I think they look at it as unfinished business. I think they will take care of unfinished business tomorrow and beat the only team they haven’t beaten in the B1G.

  • jmfriedman

I will say this—- The last 3 times we have playd them, we have been HOSED by the officials… HOSED. I wanna see it called fair this time… If so, we win 9/10.

  • AZIU71

With the #1 seed locked up, perfect time to play against the style that gives us trouble and also extract some revenge. Yogi looking good, Watford solid, Olidipo being a beast on both ends and Zeller has taken his game to another level- he needs to keep it up.

  • Kevin Tolliver

Hoosiers will roll on easy tomorrow. Enough about other teams in Big Ten being equal to Indiana.

  • Kevin Tolliver

and you won’t see Hulls miss like that the rest of the season, even though if he plays defense and passes the ball like he did today it wouldn’t matter anyway.

  • John

You know Bo is gonna slow the tempo down just like he did in Bloomington. IU should have learned from that experience.
I would love to see a blow out but just a simple win is good enough.

  • Crean did better on his mass subbing and frequency of subbing. It’s show time now and you’ve got to go with the horses that got you there. Short breathers, but suck it up! Like to see Yogi hit a few threes, which opens things up .. and hope Jordy gets some open looks! Go Hoosiers!

  • AZIU71

For sure. Didn’t mean to leave him out, like you said he had a very good floor game 7 assists/0 turnovers, just needs to get on a roll shooting.

  • IUMIKE1

So what you’re saying is that when IU wins and you wake up in the morning with a cold half eaten, cheese covered, brawt in one hand and a half empty warm Leinenkugel’s in the other hand it will enable you to still smile and say life is good, COY my a$$, and take THAT Slo Ryan.

  • MillaRed

Get out of my head Mike. You’re freaking me out!!

  • Ole Man

Sure wish Jordy would find his shot again.
    Keep throwing them up there!

they are Nords poison the green beer, now that,s Irish

  • Eva

I hope Ted Valentine doesn’t show up to ref or both teams are screwed.

  • A TRAIN

this a very good test for us these r the types of team that cause us trouble and we need to beat to move on and get ready for the dance… i wanna beat these guys in the worst way..so lets show these clowns who the best team in the country is…go iu

  • marcusgresham

Indiana wins, Kentucky loses, Duke loses. That’s a pretty perfect day.

  • Tj21

What is up with Elston not playing? Hanner is over his head.

  • MillaRed

Interesting note. Because i am watching an officiating crew give MSU a win all by themselves right now.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Completely agree. So far in this B1G tournament the higher seed has been given the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the officials and their calls. I sure hope we don’t get the typical Izzo/Ryan screw job that seems to come with playing in the B1G!

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I’ve watched. So far Teddy V has been on the late games, so let’s hope that trend continues!!!

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I think with the #1 seed locked up IU should try to press Wisconsin and see if you can’t actually turn them over. Nobody turns them over because they average, what, 8 freaking possessions a game! Speed them up and put those young freshman/sophomore guards under some full court pressure from Vic/Yogi/Will and company! Let’s see how they enjoy that!

  • AJ_IU_ColtsFan

Hmm, so Michigan couldn’t pull it off against Wisconsin. Guess their egg broke, huh? 😉

(*Looks around to see who gets that reference*)

  • Btown88

Anyone know of one extra ticket for Sat game?

  • Earl Scheib

While I always expect Hulls to drop multiple treys, i thought he played one of his best games this season. Great D, assists, and just a floor general. Never, ever thought only one point would be commendable for such a pure offensive force such as he, but it is a testament to his toughness, tenacity, team spirit, and all around bad ass-edness that helped us spank ’em despite not scoring. Jordy I will miss your bulldog-i-ness. No one epitomizes IU basketball more than you, our hometown hero, and the living embodiment of everything our program stands for. (Sorry I did not salute Cody, Vic, Wat, Yogi, Will, and everyone else) Just thought Jordy played big time today and created opps for us to dominate. Go IU…. #6 is looming!

  • PDXHoosier

unfortunately UofL won. Although I don’t really hate them, they are the only team that can take our midwest #1

  • PDXHoosier

he did play some tough D! and he’s quietly been playing tough D for some time now

  • Bigred1

Outside of the officiating I’ve noticed things over the years. One thing is Wisconsin typically with their “swing style” offense is predicated on a low scoring game, continuous motion and spacing…. One thing I’ve noticed is that no one presses Wisconsin, why allow Wisconsin to dictate the pace? Love my hoosiers but it’s beating urself if this game stays in the 50″s and 60″. I want to smack them around, go hoosiers!

Unfortunately, it’s much easier to slow the game down than speed it up. This is the essence of winning “coach of the year” in the B1G, apparently. Let’s go play ugly ball and grind it out!

  • InTheMtns

I’m sure UM assistant coach Alexander gets your reference. Remember though, according to him they were the rock, and we were the egg. He probably told them Wisconsin was an egg, too. As it turns out, the yokes on them!

  • InTheMtns

I agree. He was really solid today. I hope his shot starts falling; but I love it that he didn’t let it get to him when it wasn’t (as he has in the past). He played inspired basketball today.

  • bnord

Okay, I really wanna know what you’re referencing. Pls share?

  • Hoo Hoo Hound dog

Hey guys we can analyze this game all we want but good grief the law of averages is due to kick in for IU. Anyway out rebound them and execute on offense and IU wins.

  • Louisville might be surging, but the Hoosiers have been solid from start to finish this year. No way Indiana isn’t the Midwest #1.

  • Ballsy. Very Ballsy. However, I feel that you’ll be rewarded for your courage. I’m doing a bar crawl in Lafayette and West Lafayette. I’m sure I will be sick of Boiler fans clapping for every positive Wisconsin outcome.

  • SCHoosier

Against WIS earlier this season we shot only 37% from the field and 25% from 3 pt..won rebounding battle. Must improve our shooting this game..still take the boards and crush them on defense. I think the win over ILL pretty much gives us a #1 seed..question is..will it be in the Dayton/Indy bracket? A win over WIS would guarantee that I suppose. Let’s show ‘ol Bo who is really coach of the year. Have to give it to them the way they made UM look like little boys in the second half. Interesting how Nick S and the “Little dog” both disappear in the second half.

  • He’ll be fine. I’m sure he’s adjusted to the arena now.

Does anyone know where the game can be streamed live? I have a friend in the navy who is wanting to watch it. Thanks in advance!
