Burke, not Oladipo, named Big Ten Player of the Year

IUNDSITH0012The Big Ten Conference released the annual All-Big Ten teams this evening live on the Big Ten Network and several Indiana players were among the honorees.

Michigan’s Trey Burke was named the conference’s player of the year, edging Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller. But Oladipo was named the defensive player of the year and was also on the all-Big Ten first team, along with Zeller, Burke, Michigan’s Tim Hardaway Jr. and Ohio State’s Deshaun Thomas. On the media’s first team, Ohio State’s Aaron Craft replaced Hardaway Jr.

Oladipo and Burke were unanimous picks for the all-conference first team. Oladipo and Craft were unanimous selections on the all-defensive team.

Indiana’s Will Sheehey was named the sixth man of the year, Christian Watford was on the all-Big Ten third team, and Yogi Ferrell was on the all-conference freshman team and also an all-Big Ten honorable selection by the media. Jordan Hulls was named all-Big Ten honorable mention by the coaches.

Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan was named the league’s coach of the year by both the coaches and media.

Derek Elston was IU’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Full All-Big Ten teams after the jump.

The “Jeff Meyer incident”, not shaking hands with the opposing coaches (painter, bo ryan?, etc.) in handshake line, there was an incident with Brad Stevens when one of his players fouled Cody Zeller hard and Stevens was very happy with it and yelled something positive to his player for it and Crean yelled some words back down to Stevens, there have been other things.

  • karen

Thanks, I didn’t know that. I’m surprised that Stevens did that, too.
I have heard that Crean can be a bit arrogant but that’s all I knew.

I honestly think its bull that Dipo didn’t get it because he has come such a long way in the past three years. He’s improved so much and deserves it more than Burke(in my opinion). Burke is okay, but he’s not Oladipo good.

  • CreamandCrimson

I need to respond here….Jordan Morgan is not a great defender but he is light years ahead of AJ Hammons. Hammons is one of the laziest defenders in the conference. Ask Purdue fans (actually, scratch that, there’s no need to ever ask them anything). That team is far better with Sandi Marcius in the game because of Hammons’ lackadaisical play on the defensive end. You left off the guy who probably should have been on the defensive team….Jared Berggren. I’m not disagreeing with you, it shouldn’t have been Morgan but Hammons is not a better defender than…just about anybody.

  • 5_Banners

yea, Crean should have won it last year. But I would rather win the Big Ten than any of these individual awards to honest. Let Burke and Ryan have these awards and IU will win the tournament.

  • 5_Banners

Me niether. But as someone pointed out above, then Crean should have won last year when IU was picked 9th and finished where Wisconsin did this year.

  • WatchingYogi_atYogis

Okay, Hammonds was a poor example, but he is at least a legitimate shot blocker. I didn’t mention Berggren, because he was on the team already. Apparently, Morgan ranks first in some points per possession stat on Cinergy, so that’s probably why he was included. Even though Yogi Ferrell was a better shot blocker this year (I’m not kidding). Even though the “weak/not tough” Hoosiers gameplan against Michigan has been attack them inside and crash the boards since they cannot defend or rebound the post.

  • CreamandCrimson

Right you are…Berggren is on the team. I completely missed that for some reason. I was in disbelief because a Bo Ryan player was left off the team! Turns out I just can’t read haha…

I was stunned by Morgan being included on this list. You’re right, he is highly favored by the ppp stat on Cinergy (I think individual ppp stats are a bit useless because defense is so dependent on the lineup around you, especially for a big guy). As you said, he doesn’t block shots, he doesn’t rebound, he doesn’t create turnovers, he doesn’t dissuade opponents from attacking Michigan’s interior, it’s hard to find a legitimate reason for him to be on the All-Defensive Team.

All of those honors are exceptional and I feel privileged to support IU. If a player or coach feels snubbed for whatever reason then let it be fuel for their fire to win bigger things and prove what they believe is to be true.

I think our team is so in tune to each other, I doubt they are really even thinking about these awards right now. I am sure they were happy with what they got, and from here on out they will let their game do the talking. I would be willing to put a large wager that the fans are more upset with certain awards than the players or the coaches.

As far as perception…well the hatred is back for Indiana because of what? Winning. Some posters on here are too young to remember what that actually feels like, but I do. I remember what it feels like to be a target of hatred and criticism because of consistent winning. If receiving negative criticism or being the subject of an agenda is because it is Indiana, and we are winning then so be it. I will take it, soak it in, and enjoy it.

The honeymoon is over with adulation and we are no longer the darlings of resurgence. Now everyone wants to beat us in anyway they can. Why? Because it proves that they belong where they are trying to go and that is the top. Indiana is now the standard again, and anything in any contest will be done to try and lower the level of Indiana to improve their own personal standing against the standard.

Think I am crazy? I am just being real when I say there are players, coaches, and media that all have it out for IU for their own personal reasons. We would be blind sheep to not understand that. Their days of stepping on us because it was fun for them while we were down are over.

    We are Indiana.
    We own the Big Ten.
    We have business to handle.

  • Congrats to all of IU’s winners. Coach Crean should’ve been Coach of the Year and the Big 10 Player of the Year should’ve been, co-champions: Cody Zeller & Victor Oladipo. The BEST one-two punch in the nation! Trey Burke? Great player, but finished as a #5 seed. Burke is surrounded by players who will be playing in NBA, including himself. They lost to IU, he should have then lost the POY award, as well. Coaches & media are biased against Indiana Hoosiers. Too many examples to list.

ESPN is more IU-friendly than Big 10 network. Has anyone noticed how negative the Big 10 network is towards IU? Jim Jackson & Dave Revsine should be fired for their outright hatred of IU and their utter ignorance. Here IU fans keep that stupid network in business during the basketball season.

Lastly, I believe this snub will motivate IU’s team to win the Big 10 tournament and springboard them to the national championship. GO HOOSIERS!!!

  • Wisky didn’t overachieve. They did what they always do.

  • Earl Scheib

The only thing anyone on our team really needs to win is Banner #6. End of story.

  • plane1972

You said exactly what I was thinking, Aceman. What better motivation can this team have going into the B1G and Big tournaments? I’m happy for the snubs.

  • plane1972

    Steve Downey did it first.

  • plane1972

That was the biggest batch of BS in the whole thing. But, just more billboard material for the team.

  • jpniles

Ok… I have read through a bunch of these comments and I have to laugh. Let it be known: I fully agree with most of them. Crean has to be COY if these awards are to be respected. I feel the Oladipo snub is forgivable. Burke is a tremendous player. I think Oladipo should have gotten the nod due to his OWNING of Burke in the two games he played against him. But hey… whatever.

However, I find it comical how many people were calling for Crean’s head and questioning his coaching abilities after the losses to… well all of our losses. “Horrible end-game coach”; “was out-coached by Tubby Smith”; “was outcoached by Stevens – wasn’t even close.” “was out-coached by Bo Ryan”. And now you’re offended because he didn’t get COY. It helps to be consistent if you want your comments to be respected. Like I said, I agree that Crean should be COY. It just seems like the bandwagon is getting long… especially when we can play the “everyone hates IU” card. We are better than that. Go Hoosiers!

  • plane1972

Come on, Ole Man. I was alive then. I saw the ’91, ’87, ’92, and ’02 teams. I have an autographed picture of RMK in my office and absolutely worshiped him growing up. He was one of the best ever at his craft, but he was an unapologetic arse most of the time who embarrassed IU and its fans plenty of times. Plus, YouTube might as well be a time machine.

  • chicohoosier

Totally agree, still have DPOY and two 1st teamers and we won conference, what do all of these awards actually mean in the end…zilch

  • I really like and respect Bo Ryan as a coach, but they should have given the award to Coach Crean this year. What else does he have to do to get conference coach of the year? He’s done what no other coach has ever done over the past three seasons. Maybe it will take banner 6 to convince the naysayers.

  • Benhyoung14

Ridiculous all the way around. Just look at the stats. Oladipo is a better all around player. Last year IU was expected to finish in the bottom tier of the B1G, made a bigger turnaround than Wisky did this year and still didn’t get it. This year Wisky finishes a couple spots higher than expected, and Ryan gets it. Hulls gets punched in the face, and doesn’t even get a Sportsmanship Award. It wouldn’t surprise me for VO to go beast mode and get the NCAA player of the year award. Total sham.

  • xCowHoosier

Silver lining I am hoping for is that this gives VO a little extra mortivation to absolutely dominate the game for the next few weeks…

  • chiswede

Hardaway on first team is a joke.

  • xCowHoosier

Agree…we humans respond when given incentives…VO has just one more incentive to dominate the game

  • Oldguyy

Small correction: Knight inherited a good team when he came, although the year before he came was the first good year in several. Although McGinnis was gone, Downing, Wright, Ritter, and others returned for his first year, so IMO, “despair” is inaccurate.

  • calbert40

Mind boggling, ain’t it? Honestly, if Matta had won it, I don’t think I would have griped, but Bo? Bo?!?!? That came out of left field, if you ask me.

  • Hammer

The player of the yr in the Big 10 cant even hit the front end of a one and one to win the B10 title for his team and then dribbles down and throws up a shot that dont go in? I know one game doesnt make a year but come on this kid shoots 20-30 times a game! hehehaha This stinks! OLADIPO is the POY.

  • Hammer

I wonder what Nix is thinking right now??????????????

  • CB

Burke had a great year and Michigan is not as good without him for sure. But they gave it to a guy who had two chances to win the big ten and failed miserably.

  • After initially being pissed about the snubs (particularly CTC), I think its a good thing. These guys do best when they have something to prove- Unleash the Oladipo!

  • Ole Man

At least you called me love-able. LOL! As to not being a fan of the program, you babble meaningless words. Who made you “fan auditor”?

  • Ole Man

IF you read the original post, I’m not the one who brought it up.
    But that somehow escapes you.

  • Ole Man

Can I borrow some money from your winnings to pay for the heart attack they gave me Sunday? LOL!
Yep; a lot of times I just read without posting. For some reason I often “tick” people off.

  • henkster

They can beat almost anybody…. Seriously, he does do a great job getting his team primed for the tournament. I would rather not play them again, but if we have to, fine. We know we can beat them.

  • Hardwood Hoosier

Anyone else notice that 4 of the 5 players on the freshman list are from the state of Indiana. Should make us proud of the product that is being produced at the HS level. Wish we could have swapped a couple of our freshman this year for a couple on that list however.

  • WhatsUpKnight

excellent point. even vic himself admitted he played without an edge (i.e. got complacent) the past three games (i.e. after the huge win at msu). as dialed in as they seem to be now, the last thing i want to see is another reason for our guys (especially vic, who thrives on emotion) to feel any kind of satisfaction. so let me be the first to thank all the haters out there. job well done.

  • WhatsUpKnight

especially after they got walloped by PUke on sr night!

  • WhatsUpKnight

doesn’t it seem like CBR is slowly becoming the new CBK of the B1G? doesn’t it seem like refs and coaches alike are intimidated by him for some reason?

  • This B1G COY award is so nonsensical, so wildly unjustified, that it can only be taken as a slap to Coach Crean personally, not professionally. He must really rub some people the wrong way. Well tough.

I hate playing this card because I mostly think it is a joke and shows my bias towards IU, but I genuinely believe that CTC is not liked by other coaches as well as the media. I believe a lot of it is his own doing on how he acts and certainly the last games antics didn’t help. I believe Tom was the best coach this season and was the best coach last year as well, but for whatever reason has rubbed others the wrong way. Combine that with some peoples believe of being a bad x’s and o’s guy, you will lose the COY.

I wasn’t surprised to see Burke ahead of Oladipo, because of the numbers most people like to look at. Its stat driven and defense doesn’t show up on stats and neither does efficiency on the simple level most people are looking. Hopefully it rights itself for POY, but again who cares it will just motivate us further.

  • Hoo Hoo Hound dog

This award was decided before the season ever started.

  • Kenneth234

I understand the gripe about Oladipo not winning the Big Ten POY award, but more than likely what happened was that Cody and Victor split votes, which is not something that Burke had to worry about. I am afraid the same thing will likely happen in the National POY races as well. I think this is very unfortunate, but likely the case.
