SI: Cody Zeller tabbed as No. 1 impact sophomore

1. Cody Zeller, 6-11 C, Indiana

Staying Impact: With Cody Zeller, the Hoosiers are’s very early preseason No. 1 for 2012-13. In the statement Zeller released announcing his return, he said that his experience at IU “has exceeded my expectations,” and he exceeded almost everyone’s expectations as a freshman, emerging as one of the college game’s most efficient big men — one who made crafty plays well beyond his years. He ranked the highest of any returnee in Ken Pomeroy’s POY formula and should be a frontrunner (along with Creighton’s Doug McDermott) for the Wooden and Naismith Awards.

This has to be a no brainer for Luke Winn. Cody is the front runner for next years POY. McDermott has a case, but nothing like Zeller’s. Unless Muhammad or McDermott blow up and average more than 25 a game, I think it’s Zeller’s to lose.

McDermott did average 23 pts and 8 rebs on 60% FG and 48% 3-pt shooting as a sophmore last year.  He’s pretty good.

I agree that Cody should be the front runner (wouldn’t trade him for anyone), but unless we play them head-to-head then voters are going to be looking as much at stats and team record as what they see on the court.

I find it interesting that many fans think CZ is only a Hoosier for one more season, what if he does stay for 2 or 3 more years?!  Can U say Dynasty?!!!  One never knows what the focus of a college, great head on his shoulders, player will decide.  Lmao to be a fan with IU’s expanding player/recruit options!!!
