Hoosiers enter AP, coaches poll for first time since 2008

  • 12/12/2011 12:30 pm in

For the first time since the late stages of the 2007-2008 season, Indiana is among the top 25 teams in the country.

The 9-0 Hoosiers, who received votes in both the Associated Press poll and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll a week ago, broke into the rankings thanks to a dramatic 73-72 win over No. 1 Kentucky on Saturday.

Indiana is No. 18 in the AP poll and No. 20 in the coaches poll.

On the first Big Ten coaches teleconference of the season Monday morning, Tom Crean was asked about his team potentially entering the top 25 by Dustin Dopirak of The Bloomington Herald-Times.

“It’s not like it would be a disappointment if we weren’t, but I’d be shocked if we weren’t at the same time,” he said. “These players have earned it. I’m really excited for what’s ahead for this team.

“The biggest thing is they stay locked in to their own expectations. I think that’s what’s so important. … That they continue to understand improvement, unity, togetherness, offensive and defensive fundamentals, the preparation that they’ve put forth. That’s what’s been so good for this team.”

Indiana last appeared in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll at No. 24 on March 17, 2008.

The ranking in the Associated Press poll is the program’s first since being placed at No. 18 on March 3, 2008.

Disrespected… IU should be a top 15 team. They have beat every other team by 10 plus and then beat the #1 team in the nation! They are undefeated. Show this team some respect.

The coaches really think there have been 19 teams better than IU to this point in the season? I thought we’d jump in at 16/17, but we’ll see where we end up after we knock off MSU in their building…

  • HoosierDadE

I said 16 after the game (granted this was post parking lot sprint outside the bar)…

Either way, glad to be back on the National Landscape

And OSU stays at #2. if the cards fall right we could be playing #1 OSU at home on new years. Cuse would have to lose to NC state next week.

Well deserved….guess they’re not surprising anyone anymore!!

Do you guys remember when I said we would knock off Kentucky and would be 9-0? Remember? You don’t? Well I didn’t.

18 I suppose I will take, but the coaches can bite me.

It feels so good to be ranked again.  I can say that I savor being ranked more now than any other time as a fan.  2 other observations….

-18 is way to low.  If we were Duke, and played the same exact schedule with the exact same results, we’d be a lock for top ten (and probably higher)

-I just hope, we’re not due for a letdown.  With the added diversion of finals, I hope we can regroup for our next challenge

I have no complaints about the ranks. No need to push complaints because we have time to go higher at this moment in the season and we will go higher.  The game with MSU away will push us higher if we are in the game at the 2 minute mark and have a chance to win. I am completely sold on our solid performance right now.  Crean is passing all my expectations right now regarding his abilities as a coach.

I will be rooting for the Wolfpack so hard in that game. Not only would it give us the chance to get OSU at #1(though without the students that game will be very different) but it really helps our SoS.

I am so happy for Verdell, Tom, Matt, Daniel, and Kory.

We have played one good team all year. We still have a lot to prove, considering our last few seasons.

    Wooohooooo!

  • Christopher

    “disrespected”…really?
Our schedule hasn’t been all that rough, we haven’t played many road games and we won a rivalry game. I was shocked to see us as high at #18. I expected something more along the lines of the Coaches Poll. I mean no disrespect to what we have done so far, but we still have a long way to prove that we are a top 15 team. I feel respected being in the Top 20!!!

Students may not all be there but we’ll have a strong showing from the Alum. Since I’ll be in town I’ll be one of them

Why do some of you think we are being disrespected? We haven’t sniffed the rankings in 3+ years and some of you have the audacity to say we are being disrespected. C’mon Man! Just enjoy it!

Remember, in the LAST 2 YEARS, we came to the point where losing close game vs good (not great) teams was okay as long as we played hardI knew we were going to be ranked after Saturday’s game but I’m more focused on avoiding the letdown game vs Notre Dame. I honestly feel like some of HoosierNation is being a little greedy after beating UK. I believe the voters are waiting to see how we respond vs ND so let’s just enjoy the fact that a number will be in front of our name on the scoreboard.

I don’t understand the AP poll, and maybe not either poll really. IU was receiving more votes (23 I think) and were 6th in line to be ranked in the USA Today/espn poll before the pUKe game w/no games in between. I guess you could say they were ranked #31. The Hoosiers moved up to #20. Fair enough. In the AP poll, the Hoosiers only received 4 votes and were much lower than #31 (rivals isn’t showing vote-getters from the 12/05/2011 poll for some reason but they were around #38 or so) prior to beating pUKe. The Hoosiers moved up to #18 after beating pUKe. Anyone know why such a big difference in the AP poll?

#18 is fair, but Illinois and Michigan ahead of us? No way. Would the coaches honestly play IU right now than those 2 teams?

  • IUFAN33

they beat scrub teams till kentucky, they need to beat ND and some top big ten teams to crack the top 15

So I post this article on my facebook and of ALL people, Jemarcus Ellis, yes, Jemarcus Ellis “liked” it.  I’m confused.

Coaches don’t really watch many games in-season.  On a Saturday night they’re either playing their own game, recruiting, working on gameplans/practice schedules, or just maybe spending a little time with the family.  Only coaches who probably saw much of it were BigTen or SEC coaches doing some scouting.

  • TodzillaCapeCoralFL

This team needs to continue to look only towards the next game, and strive to be “1-0” every time they play.  There is room for improvement, which is exciting.  IU is only 9 games into playing with a true, uber-skilled center.  Once they learn to feed the post, the sky is the limit for THIS team, nevermind next year…Congrats to VJIII, CWat et al.

So, we’re finally in the top 25 in the “real polls”?  Ken Pomeroy, in his stats-driven, unbiased rankings has had us in the top 25 since the win at Evansville and currently has us at 13 behind only Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan State in the Big Ten.  PS – on another note, has anyone else heard the rumors that Jared Sullinger is battling more than just back spasms?  I’ve got friends in Ohio saying it’s disc problems and may be looking at missing 8 to 10 weeks.  I’m not one to wish ill fortune on anyone but if that turns out to be true, what a huge difference for the Big Ten race.

I’m happy bout the ranking but not important.  Keep our eyes on the irish so we can stomp them like we are capable of.  Lets get into conference play with no losses to give us an almost lock for the tourney.  I have said it before and I’ll say it again, this team has exceeded my expectations already (regardless if we didnt beat UK) but that can change quickly with a couple bad losses so keep it up.  Continue to play hard intense defense and run the ball up the court and feed it to Zeller.  i truly feel that we have a far outsiide shot to win the bigten if we get help from some other teams.  Far being the key word.  But back to the main point, don’t lose focus on Notre dame, Howard, and UMBC like i just did

I don’t think there’s much to understand with these polls.  They are a result of popularity, gut feelings and votes.  Who’s supposed to be good, who looks good right now, what teams outside the power conferences get token appearances…  I find it much more interesting following the Ken Pomeroy ratings.  He has a hell of a system he’s been developing over the past ten years and even though it has it’s faults, it is a much more accurate picture of the national basketball picture than the traditionally recognized rankings.  I’m happier to be at 13 on http://www.kenpom.com than I am with the sudden appearance in either of these polls because I know exactly why he has us there.

Now that we beat a #1 in UK, I do not care about the rankings.  Glad to see us check in at 18 or 20 which means we are getting some street cred, but I want to see this team improve.

As long as we improve , I think we solidify our rankings and show the Big 10 we should be respected.

Give me a #16 ranking at the end of the season and a #4 seed and that means this team was at least 11-7 in Big 10 play and beat some quality opponents in conference play.

Good points. Only thing, im a fan. I can look past any team I want. Im sure our team wont.

he also said thats why he came to IU  !!

  • Tk1712

I think they got it right in the polls. IU doesn’t have a ton of talent compared to the elite teams. Sure, they’ve probably got the best home-court advantage in the country, but that doesn’t make them a better team come tournament time. But the point has been made: Indiana CAN indeed contend with the best the nation has to offer. I don’t think IU is better than Kentucky, they just got the better of them Saturday night.

Like I told my brother, Indiana has proven they are GOOD, but they haven’t proven that they’re GREAT. Next year we will be great though. Watford and Hulls as seniors, Zeller as a sophomore, and Perea and Ferrell as freshmen. Indiana is going beast mode in 2011.

    Hoo Hoo Hoo, HOOSIERS!

Stay thirsty, my friends. No need for too much too fast. Back on the scene with a chance to zero in on OSU, MSU, Wisconsin. That’s good enough for me right now.

I would prefer we stay disrespected and hungry for more… if we do that the ranking will increase.

RANDOM question – guy at work said he heard a “rumor” that Coach Knight called Tom Crean after the KY game and all Knight said was “that is how you do it” and hung up.

This seems very weird and way too far fetched, seeing as Knight seems to go out of his way to avoid Indiana, but has anyone else heard anything close to this?  Just asking…

  • IUfanPurduePhD

I’m bummed to see NC State already at 6-3 (although two of those losses came at the hands of [now-]ranked opponents). We need them to be a tourney team. Go Wolfpack!

Good call, stona.  I think being ranked at #19 (average) will provide some drive for our guys, who’d love to break into the top 15.

I almost wish we would’ve come out at #21 so that Crean could play the “disrespected” card in the lockerroom (I do not think that #19 is being “disrespected” since we’re in the top 20).  I remember Knight’s teams in the late ’90s getting ranked above their station then becoming complacent.  For my money, #19 is perfect: you are recognized as one of the twenty best teams, but you still have a lot for which you can strive.

Yes, I agree,  I mean that the team can’t look past and I do not think they will.

Don’t get me wrong: I loved watching that game in my living room with my 12-year-old son, but man, I would give ANYTHING to have been watching it at Nick’s.
