Bruce Weber: ‘Indiana Will Suck’

by Eamonn Brennan in Opponents | June 20th, 2008

Bruce Weber gave an oh-so-hilarious speech to a bunch of Illinois fans yesterday, and he closed with this gem:

- Weber, on the Big Ten race: “The league should be wide open and we can be right in the middle of it. I do know one thing, though. I think Indiana will suck. Don’t put that on the Internet.”

Awwww. Brucey still hasn’t gotten over losing Eric Gordon! Isn’t that cute?

For his own sake, Bruce’s team better not suck next year. If the Illini come anywhere close to that 16-19 record, Bruce will be stuck obsessing about Indiana on his free time. He’ll have lots of it.

  • hoosiergal
I would really like to stuff a IU win over UI down his whiny throat. ; )
  • ALH_00
I think he's right...when he says "we can be right in the middle of it". That's exactly where I expect IL to be...right in the middle. Nothing special. Maybe they'll be good in 2009-10, but not this winter.

    Stay classy BW!
  • Ignoring the fact that Bruce is more than likely correct in his assessment of IU, Weber really suffers from wearing his emotions on his sleeve. In many cases, this characteristic is endearing if not preferable, but as a high profile head coach this repeatedly bites him in the ass.

How does he say something like that and not realize that it's going to end up on the internet despite his pleas to the contrary? The guy really needs to learn to shut his pie hole from time to time.

What a baby. All you have to say is 5 national championships for us , zipo for him.
  • Bring it on Brucey!
  • Kelin Blab
Does Bruce Weber understand the fury he has opened up when Illinois comes here. He could have let it rest but nooooooo, once again, he brought this on himself.

I am sure Crean will put this on the bulletion board...........TOMORROW. IU 77 Illinois 56
Dont care how young this team is, don't give them motivation beyond what they already have.
  • My favorite part was where Weber said the team has nicknamed Alex Legion "Kobe."

    Riiiigghhtttt.
  • ricbraun
compared to what they have had on their team for the past couple years, Legion might seem like Kobe. I hope he enjoyed his job at UI while it lasted, after this year it won't be there anymore
  • "I do know one thing, though. Bruce Webber is a douche bag."

  • MikeinNC
Unbelievably low level of emotional maturity for a D1 coach....
  • fergrad
Stay classy Bruce. And should you really be talking about other programs sucking when you inherited the best team in your school's history 4 years ago and have turned that national success into a 5-13 big ten squad? Do us all a favor Bruce and just let Eric Gordon go.
  • MillaRed
How horrible must it be to have this guy as a head coach? This guy is more concerned about IU than any other person in the world. It's almost an addiction.

I'm picturing him in his office at night ripping apart Hoosier pillows with razor blades. The guy is a freak. Tell you what Bruce, when IU passes your program up again in a few years, while you are on the sideline with your mouth open and that dumb look on your face, you will be an assistant at Georgia Southern you tard.

Pick up a fresh bottle of Xanax and move on coach.
  • cooper
While IU will suck next year, he is still a jerkoff.
  • Na, I dont think we'll be THAT bad. Actually, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that we will finish in the top 5. Above UI of course.
  • And by the way, just wait until UI comes to visit. IU fans will have themselves a little fun. bwahahahaha.
  • jgongora86
    lol
  • Let's hope Crean just sliced this little piece of paper out of the article and hung it on a bulletin board in the locker room to greet every incoming player.

I guess the reason they call Legion "Kobe" is because he never passes the ball and never plays defense. Can you feel the team chemistry?
  • bahickma
I don't mean to be a jerk here...but Kobe Bryant is one of the best defenders in the NBA.

They call Legion "Kobe" because he dominates their pick-up games and practices. But that only says that nobody on the Illini squad is capable of defending a mediocre guard like Legion.
  • In one of the other postings of this interview I read, that was one of the reasons that Weber cited for calling Legion "Kobe" was the lack of defensive game.

    Don't shoot the messenger. :-P
  • MikeinNC
Wow, that shows that Brucey doesn't know the pro game either - Kobe has been lauded for defense and some of the pundits considered the Lakers to be the best passing team in the NBA this year.....what DOES Bruce no how to do well, besides whining?

Maybe Bruce could ink an endorsement deal with Nike like the old Bo Jackson commercials, but instead of "Bo knows this and that" it could be "Bruce knows whining" , "Bruce don't know how to recruit", "Bruce don't know how to be classy", "Bruce don't know how to keep his players out of trouble", "Bruce don't know how to let things go", "Bruce don't know how to take a talented roster of Bill Self's players and seize his onetime chance at a banner", "Bruce knows bad haircuts and bad suits"...and so on. Not that I have any hostility towards the guy or anything....
  • I don't know what part of NC you're in, but did you catch Bomani Jones on the radio this morning calling Brucey Baby the Dummy of the Week? Basically, he said the same thing we all are, about how Bruce should worry more about saving his job rather than insulting Indiana--and then asking for it not to be reprinted on the internet. It was beautiful, and refreshing coming from some Triangle-area sports talk types.
  • MikeinNC
That's interesting, didn't realize anyone outside the midwest was paying attention to this anymore...I'm in the RTP, but never get to listen to much talk radio...I will have to check this guy out.....thanks
  • woodpecker
I'm sure he meant it in jest, BUT ...... lol ........man it is comical coming from his mouth.
  • JerryCT
I think we should send his words all over the internet especially where he recruits. How would you like to be a player or team of his getting bad mouthed in public like this ?

I am hopeful that TC can mold these guys into a tough team to beat.............but where is the offense comign from w/o Crawford ?.

Dumes, Jones, Pritchard, Williams, Taber - starting 5 and Dumes and Pritchard must play 30 minutes/game
  • You would have thought there would be more posts in the "Hopefully Jamar Smith doesn't kill someone this season" tag.
  • HoosierSmitty
Are you serious? Is he really stupid enough to make a comment like that? In jest or not, that's just incredibly poor taste from a person who is supposed to represent his school with class and dignity. I can't imagine how anyone in the country, let alone in their own fan base could actually like the guy. Totally classless as usual.
  • jgongora86
I just wanted to reccomend a very good article at yahoo about Coach Crean.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news;_ylt=AiTXM8N...
  • Ryan_Btown
Another shot of how classy Bruce Weber and Illinois really are. You can see how much respect he has for a university taking the right steps to clean up their program. Stay classy Bruce.
  • OnFireMattMeyer
What a class act coward. I can't believe that a D1 coach would still try to drag something like that out. Could you even imagine what it would be like to actually know this guy? I bet he's the type of person that would hold a grudge for twenty years. Weber's probably more upset about Sampson and Gordon leaving than most Hoosier fans because he will never get to beat the people that brought him all that pain and suffering. At this point I hope Roth and Jones have career games against Illinois so he can cry about letting those guys get away.
  • MikeinNC
Yes, you wonder how he can ever mold his kids into a team that can handle adversity when he can't let something go that happened over a year ago....great leadership Bruce!
  • Bruce Weber's karma is so dark I had to throw my Weber grill in the dumpster.
  • bz
i hate bruce weber, but i don't know if i hate him that much!
  • Kelin Blab
I will honestly predict, Bruce Weber 09' vs IU will be a far far worse atmosphere for him than 08'..................

Get ready for the "Suck this Bruce Chants" "Who sucks now" you may get some more hostile chants I cannot repeat.............
  • JerryCT
the http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news;_ylt=AiTXM8N... piece on Creean is great to read. Thanks to jgongora for alerting us.

We may not win alot of games but our team will not suck, we wil be proud of where we are going
  • Ditto both the article and the comments. Absolutely nobody says IU sucks and most definetely not Mr. Weber better not be saying.
  • CutterInChicago
    A truly class act.
Rick Bozich at the Courier Journal has this to say about Weber

    http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/bozich/blo...
  • IUBBALL81
Dear Mr. Weber, I cannot wait until you visit this winter!

I hope the University of Illiterates keep you around for a while

until we reload and kick your a**!!!!
  • bz
do i really need another reason to hate weber? no, but i'll always take another. good job brucey. your chances at beating a team that "sucks" as much as iu will just went down substantially.
  • he's probably right, but with a new head coach of high moral caliber that is well-liked across the country, i don't understand why he needs to keep taking shots at IU.

Sampson is gone, Gordon is gone - let it go Bruce. worry about your own team, and your Illinois program which has gone in the toilet just three years after a National Championship game appearance.

if Izzo said it, then I wouldn't have had a problem. hell, if Painter said it, it would be OK. but coming from a guy whose team didn't even make the NIT? that's laughable.
  • He also said: "Not only is Peoria the basketball capital of Illinois, but the world."

To me, that's another clear cut shot right at IU. Everyone, and i mean everyone knows that the state of Indiana is the mecca of basketball Him saying Peoria is the basketball capitol of the world is laughable. Taiwan has a better case of being the basketball capitol of the world than Illinois. You know what, IU might suck this year, but i bet we still beat Illinois, what does that say about them!? The coach and program are frauds, as well as their "orange krush" student section. The reason why you see a lot of orange in their arena is because their student sections are actually inmates from the U.S. Penitentiary in Marion. A recruiting hotbed as well for Weber. Have fun coaching at the lowly program that is Illinoise, Ms. Gerber Weber, your time is about up.
