IU basketball rolls to easy win in FISU America Games opener in Lima, Peru

IU basketball had no trouble with its opener on Tuesday night in the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru.

The Hoosiers, representing the USA, easily defeated Peru 115-36 at Sede Legada Villa El Salvador.

Indiana led 12-0 early and built an 18-point lead at 28-10 by the end of the opening period. The result was never in doubt after the opening minutes.

By halftime, IU had extended its lead to 59-22 and its cushion ballooned all the way to 90-28 by the end of the third period.

Aiden Sherrell led the way with 19 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.

The Hoosiers went deep into their bench for most of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter, with walk-ons Drew Snively and Ben Winker logging heavy minutes along with freshmen Vaughn Karvala, Trevor Manhertz and Prince-Alexander Moody, as well as senior guard Justin Monden.

The matchup between the United States and Peru was the third game of the day at the venue, with Chile defeating Brazil 69-42 in the opener and Argentina defeating Colombia 103-40 in the second game of the afternoon.

Given Tuesday’s results, the United States and Argentina look like the favorites to meet in the final next week.

IU will return to action on Thursday against the Virgin Islands at 6 p.m. ET.

Wednesday’s games include Chile vs. Argentina, Brazil vs. Colombia and Peru vs. the Virgin Islands.

The elimination stage will begin on Saturday, July 25.

• Junior forward Aiden Sherrell dominated inside with 19 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, and two blocked shots. He shot 7-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.

• Freshman guard Prince-Alexander Moody led the bench unit in scoring for the second-straight UniUSA game with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. He added three rebounds and three assists.

• Freshman wing Trevor Manhertz stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. He knocked down 3-of-5 shots from behind the 3-point line.

• Junior guard Jaeden Mustaf provided 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. He added six rebounds and one steal.

• Freshman wing Vaughn Karvala chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds. He added a couple highlight dunks, which included a second-half tip slam.

• Redshirt junior guard Markus Burton recorded 10 points, four rebounds, six assists and one steal.

• Sophomore forward Trent Sisley posted a perfect shooting night with 11 points and six rebounds. He went 5-for-5 from the floor.

• Junior guard Bryce Lindsay contributed six points, two rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

• Junior guard Darren Harris chipped in two points, three rebounds, and four steals.

• Senior guard Justin Monden knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and added three steals.

• Sophomore guard Drew Snively scored five points off the bench.
