IU basketball transfer portal player profile: Notre Dame guard Markus Burton
Indiana’s 2026-27 roster will be rebuilt this spring by second-year coach Darian DeVries, who will navigate the portal with executive director of basketball Ryan Carr and the Hoosier coaching staff.
Inside the Hall will examine some of the prospects who could make sense for the Hoosiers to pursue out of the portal. Today: Notre Dame guard Markus Burton.
Numbers to know
69 career games at Notre Dame: 19.1 points, 3.8 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 1.8 steals in 33.2 minutes per game. Burton is a career 33.2 percent 3-point shooter, 84.7 percent free-throw shooter and shoots 43.8 percent overall from the field. He made 68 starts for the Fighting Irish.
Background and potential fit
A native of Mishawaka, Burton played at Penn and was the No. 153 player and a three-star recruit in the 2023 cycle. His profile at 247Sports listed Notre Dame as his only high-major offer. He was Indiana’s Mr. Basketball in 2023 and finished his career as the No. 20 scorer all-time in Indiana.
Listed at 6-foot and 190 pounds, Burton has been the best player for Notre Dame in the Micah Shrewsberry era, but hasn’t experienced much team success. The Fighting Irish have finished with a losing record in each of the last three seasons and Shrewsberry will be on hot seat lists entering the 2026-27 season.
As a freshman at Notre Dame, Burton was named the ACC rookie of the year and was named third-team All-ACC. He averaged 17.5 points per game that season, which ranked third in the country among Division I freshmen.
As a sophomore, Burton was named preseason All-ACC first team and averaged 21.3 points, making him the fifth leading scorer in the country. In conference play, Burton averaged 23.5 points per game, which led the ACC. He earned second-team All-ACC honors.
Expectations were sky-high for Burton entering his junior season in South Bend, but his season was cut short due to injuries. In the preseason, he was named first team All-ACC and was on the watch lists for the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award and the Bob Cousy Award. He finished the season with averages of 18.5 points, 3.7 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 30.1 minutes per game while shooting 48.9 percent from the field and 30.6 percent on 3s.
Burton recently announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal and will be one of the most sought-after guards in the country this spring. He played in just 10 games this past season due to a foot injury, meaning he will likely have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Given the players it is losing via graduation and roster attrition, it’s no secret that Indiana needs help across its roster and the guard position will be pivotal to improving on an 18-14 record this past season.
Burton is from Indiana, is a capable scorer and distributor at the high-major level. The Hoosiers need at least two impact guards in the portal this spring, so he makes a lot of sense as a player for the IU staff to pursue.
