Quick thoughts on a 72-67 win against Purdue:

How it happened

Indiana came out fired up in its rivalry game against Purdue on Tuesday night in Bloomington. With Assembly Hall rocking, the Hoosiers used hot shooting to stay in the game early. But the Boilermakers staved off the early momentum and a C.J. Cox jumper with 7:04 left in the first half gave Purdue a four-point lead, prompting Darian DeVries to call a timeout. From there, the Hoosiers used a 15-2 spurt to grab a 34-25 lead by the 2:44 mark of the half. A Lamar Wilkerson 3-pointer capped off the run. A Tucker DeVries 3-pointer 42 seconds later gave IU its first double-digit lead and another Wilkerson 3-pointer with 37 seconds left in the first half gave IU a 40-29 lead at the break. The Hoosiers scored an impressive 1.33 points per possession and hit eight of their 20 3-point attempts in the first half. Purdue shot just 45.8 percent from the field and committed seven turnovers in the first half.

Indiana had a chance to stretch the lead to 16 points on a Nick Dorn transition 3-point attempt, but it rimmed off and Purdue scored the following five points – a Cox 3-pointer and a Tray Kaufman-Renn layup – to make it 47-39 at the under-16 media timeout. The Boilermakers, however, had a scoring drought of more than three minutes before the under-12 timeout and IU stretched the lead back to double figures at 51-41 on a Nick Dorn layup. A pair of 3-pointers from Dorn stretched IU’s lead to 12 at 57-45 with 10:39 remaining.

After IU led by 14 on a pair of Jasai Miles free throws, Purdue answered with a 7-0 run to make it 59-52 at the under-eight media timeout. Braden Smith’s second 3-pointer of the game brought Purdue within seven again at 65-58 with 4:30 left. After Indiana missed two front ends of 1-and-1s – one by Reed Bailey and one by Darian DeVries – Purdue got within four at 65-61 on a free throw from Kaufman-Renn. Indiana took a timeout with 1:48 left. Wilkerson turned the ball over out of the timeout and Smith’s layup got Purdue within two at 65-63. But IU answered with a left-wing 3-pointer by Conor Enright to make it 68-63 and IU got a stop, and DeVries was fouled. But DeVries missed the front end again and Kaufman-Renn’s bucket made it 68-65 with 28 seconds left. Purdue fouled Enright, who made both free throws to make it 70-65 and Purdue’s Jack Benter made a layup to make it 70-67 with 10.9 seconds left. IU took a timeout. Wilkerson was fouled out of the timeout and made both free throws to seal a 72-67 victory for the Hoosiers.
