Quick thoughts on a 100-56 win against Bethune-Cookman:

How it happened

An early start just a day after Thanksgiving is a prime start for a letdown in college basketball. But not for this Indiana team. The Hoosiers were connected from the opening tip and raced to a nine-point lead just over three minutes into the game.

IU was engaged defensively for most of the first half, holding Bethune-Cookman to just 25.8 percent shooting and 23 points. The stout defense combined with a strong offensive showing allowed IU to lead by as many as 29 points and enter the locker room with a comfortable 51-23 lead. Indiana shot 17-for-34 from the field and scored 1.43 points per possession. Tucker DeVries set the pace for IU with 12 points and Tayton Conerway added nine points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.

IU’s domination continued in the second half. By the 12:58 mark, the Hoosiers had pushed the lead to 36 points at 69-33 on a layup by DeVries. A 3-pointer by DeVries at the 10:15 mark pushed the lead to 40 points at 76-36. It was IU’s ninth triple of the afternoon. Lamar Wilkerson’s 3-point play with 8:10 left gave IU a 42-point lead at 83-41. Nick Dorn’s third 3-pointer of the afternoon gave IU an 86-43 lead with 7:16 remaining. It was an impressive performance by the Hoosiers, who improved to 7-0 under first-year coach Darian DeVries.

Standout performers

DeVries led Indiana with 20 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including a 5-for-10 mark on 3s. He also had five assists in 27 minutes. Wilkerson added 18 points in 21 minutes. Sam Alexis, Dorn and Trent Sisley each had 14 points off the bench.

Statistics that stand out

Indiana shot 54.5 percent from the field, scored 1.41 points per possession and committed just seven turnovers. The Hoosiers were 12-for-31 on 3s, good for 38.7 percent.
